Universität Flensburg) (Instut für Mathematik und ihre Didaktik), Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: Was ist Mathematik? Geht man dieser Frage nach, wird man auf verschiedenste Vorstellungen treffen. Die Grundlagen für diese Vorstellungen werden meist im Mathematikunterricht geschaffen, da man dort den ersten Kontakt mit der Materie erlebt. Wie man diese Materie erlebt, hängt von der Art des Mathematikunterrichts ab. Da die Vorstellungen der Lehrerkräfte den Unterricht in seiner Gestaltung und in ihrem Handeln beeinflussen, bilden sie eine Vorrausetzung für die Art des Unterrichts. Dieser Hintergrund spiegelt das Interesse an der Erforschung über Vorstellungen von Lehrern über das Lehren und Lernen wider. Primarstufenlehrkräfte sind selten als Probanden ausgewählt, bzw. in die Probandengruppe einbezogen worden. Das Ziel dieser Arbeit ist es, die Vorstellungen über Anforderungen im Mathematikunterricht empirisch zu erheben. Das heißt, welche Übungsmethode, Darstellungsform der Mathematik, etc. empfinden die Mathematiklehrkräfte in der Primarstufe als wichtig. Ausschlaggebend für die Idee zu dieser Arbeit war die Überlegung, ob Unterschiede in der Vorstellung in Bezug zur Mathematik zwischen fachfremd mathematikunterrichtenden Grundschullehrkräften und ihren fachspezifisch ausgebildeten Kollegen bestehen. Es wird versucht herauszufinden, ob Korrelationen zwischen bestimmten Faktoren wie zum Beispiel dem Alter oder der fachspezifischen Ausbildung und den Vorstellungen bestehen und ob bestimmte Vorstellungen von einzelnen Faktoren abhängen. Da es eine Befragung dieser Art, gerichtet an diese Gruppe von Lehrern in Deutschland nach meiner Recherche noch nicht gab, gibt dies der Arbeit einen explorativen Charakter. Die Ergebnisse lassen den Schluss zu, das die Vorstellungen der fachstudierten Lehrkräfte sich von den fachfremden unterscheiden. Deutlich wird dies bei wesentlichen Merkmalen der Mathematik. Auch im Bezug zum Alter stellt sich eine markante Unterschied herraus.

The question, 'how to do things with words?' (John L. Austin) could characterize the field of pedagogy in general, if not also practices, structural and material aspects had to be taken into account. The empirical question how social practices constitute a (binding) reality comes close to the praxeological perspective. On one side, 'praxeology' is a specific methodological approach to explore practices empirically. On the other side, it covers philosophical or sociological theories of action regarding sociality as generated by social practices and contextual structures. Practices are supposed to transmit, constitute and create ?establish e.g. social orders. The focus lies on corporal, performative and emergent aspects of the practices. All the mainly empirical studies in this volume deal with the praxeological question how sociality is generated in dynamic and relational actions in a pedagogical frame.

This survey provides an overview of the German discussion on modelling and applications in schools. It considers the development from the beginning of the 20th century to the present, and discusses the term “mathematical model” as well as different representations of the modelling process as modelling cycles. Different trends in the historical and current debate on applications and modelling can be differentiated as perspectives of modelling. Modelling is now one of the six general mathematical competencies defined in the educational standards for mathematics introduced in Germany in 2003, and there have been several initiatives to implement modelling in schools, as well as a whole range of empirical research projects focusing on teachers or students in modelling processes. As a special kind for implementing modelling into school, modelling weeks and days carried out by various German universities have been established.

Kvasz’s book is a contribution to the history and philosophy of mat- matics, or, as one might say, the historical approach to the philosophy of mathematics. This approach is for mathematics what the history and philosophy of science is for science. Yet the historical approach to the philosophy of science appeared much earlier than the historical approach to the philosophy of mathematics. The ?rst signi?cant work in the history and philosophy of science is perhaps William Whewell’s Philosophy of the Inductive Sciences, founded upon their History. This was originally published in 1840, a second, enlarged edition appeared in 1847, and the third edition appeared as three separate works p- lished between 1858 and 1860. Ernst Mach’s The Science of Mech- ics: A Critical and Historical Account of Its Development is certainly a work of history and philosophy of science. It ?rst appeared in 1883, and had six further editions in Mach’s lifetime (1888, 1897, 1901, 1904, 1908, and 1912). Duhem’s Aim and Structure of Physical Theory appeared in 1906 and had a second enlarged edition in 1914. So we can say that history and philosophy of science was a well-established ?eld th th by the end of the 19 and the beginning of the 20 century. By contrast the ?rst signi?cant work in the history and philosophy of mathematics is Lakatos’s Proofs and Refutations, which was p- lished as a series of papers in the years 1963 and 1964.

No one disputes how important it is, in today's world, to prepare students to un derstand mathematics as well as to use and communicate mathematics in their future lives. That task is very difficult, however. Refocusing curricula on funda mental concepts, producing new teaching materials, and designing teaching units based on 'mathematicians' common sense' (or on logic) have not resulted in a better understanding of mathematics by more students. The failure of such efforts has raised questions suggesting that what was missing at the outset of these proposals, designs, and productions was a more profound knowledge of the phenomena of learning and teaching mathematics in socially established and culturally, politically, and economically justified institutions - namely, schools. Such knowledge cannot be built by mere juxtaposition of theories in disci plines such as psychology, sociology, and mathematics. Psychological theories focus on the individual learner. Theories of sociology of education look at the general laws of curriculum development, the specifics of pedagogic discourse as opposed to scientific discourse in general, the different possible pedagogic rela tions between the teacher and the taught, and other general problems in the inter face between education and society. Mathematics, aside from its theoretical contents, can be looked at from historical and epistemological points of view, clarifying the genetic development of its concepts, methods, and theories. This view can shed some light on the meaning of mathematical concepts and on the difficulties students have in teaching approaches that disregard the genetic development of these concepts.
