Most Christians are completely unaware that for over 200 years there has existed in England, and at times in Wales, Scotland, Canada, Bermuda, Australia, New Zealand, Russia and the USA, an episcopal Church, similar in many respects to the Church of England, worshipping with a Prayer Book virtually identical to the 1662 Book of Common Prayer, and served by bishops, presbyters and deacons whose orders derive directly from Canterbury, and ecumenically enriched by Old Catholic, Swedish, Moravian and other successions. The Free Church of England as an independent jurisdiction within the Universal Church began in the reign of George III. In 1991 the Church sent a bishop to George Carey's Enthronement as Archbishop of Canterbury. In addition to presenting for the first time a detailed history of the Free Church of England, John Fenwick also explores the distinctive doctrinal emphases of the denomination, its Constitution, its liturgical tradition, its experience of the historic episcopate, and its many connections with other churches (including the Reformed Episcopal Church in the USA). He discusses why the Church has, so far, failed to fulfil the vision of its founders, and what the possible future of the Church might be - including a very significant expansion as many Anglicans and other Christians considering new options discover this historic, episcopal, disestablished Church with its international connections and ecumenical character.

Educational policy is becoming more concerned with the need to ensure that people leave school or college fully literate. We need good oral communicators in the workplace, and being able to understand and respond to different kinds of language is vital in today's society. Included here is a detailed and highly readable account of the ways in which language affects every aspect of study - it crosses all subject boundaries, yet it is commonly seen as the sole responsibility of the English teacher to manage this area of the curriculum. The first section of the book looks at the ideology behind language, while the second section considers how schools and local authorities have tackled improving levels of literacy. The third section is concerned with practical advice on how to teach language most successfully, irrespective of subject. Latter sections focus on developing a critical eye, and supporting pupils who have particular needs.

Reminiscences of New Brighton and Liverpool. The constant procession of ocean-going liners up and down the Mersey was a real spectacle. Wallasey has eight miles of promenade, fringed by golden sands with children's talent contests "Joytime" in Vale Park. The Tower Grounds, rides, skating and a figure of eight. We even had a circus and a zoo. The New Palace indoor amusement park was the largest in England. Tommy Mann's miniature railway operated in the Tower Grounds next to the Promenade. Trips on the Royal Iris, the ferries and a magnificent pier. And don't forget the largest outdoor swimming pool in Europe. What a place to grow up in! It was my Disneyland and on my very own doorstep.

At over 400 pages long, this book will bring back memories to the local residents, the day trippers and holiday makers who flooded into the area to enjoy all the attractions it had to offer such as: the largest tower in Britain, the pier, the theatres, the swimming pools, the fairgrounds, the parks, the busy shopping streets and all the other entertainments provided for their pleasure. The area of Wallasey has a recorded history that dates back to the days of Pirates & Smugglers in the early 16th Century. Wallasey became well known for becoming a haven for rich merchants who built vast numbers of mansion houses and it is more recently remembered for its time as a popular seaside resort from the 19th century onwards. Industry was also present during the back end of the industrial boom. Wallasey had its own Mill, the potteries of Seacombe and of course the docking area. This book captures the important factors of Wallasey that made it popular with tourists and why merchants flocked from across the land to build their mansions and become a part of the ever growing prosperous town. That later became one of the busiest seaside resorts in Britain. Take a step back in time and remember Wallasey from days gone by.
