When World War II began, Britain had an immediate crisis on its hands: its ability to import food drastically curtailed, the island would very quickly have to find ways both to produce more and use less. For that latter task, the kitchen was the headquarters, and this little book presents the battle plan. Drawn from scattered sources in the archives of the Imperial War Museums and presented here in a charming gift book, the recipes of Victory is in the Kitchen helped guide British cooks as they coped with unprecedented scarcity and restrictions. Rustling up creative dishes out of meager rations, the recipes gathered here include scrap bread pudding, potato pastry, and sheep's heart pie, as well as adapted English standbys like Lancashire hot pot, Queen's Pudding, and crumpets. Interwoven with the recipes are colorful reproductions of inspirational wartime posters, while an introduction sets the historical context. The resulting package is the perfect gift for any cook, a reminder of a time when ration books and recipes had to be made to work together.

Everyday Foods in War Time By Mary Swartz Rose Wartime Recipes "FOOD IS FUEL FOR FIGHTERS. Do not waste it. Save WHEAT, MEAT, SUGARS AND FATS. Send more to our Soldiers, Sailors and Allies." The patriotic housewife finds her little domestic boat sailing in uncharted waters. The above message of the Food Administration disturbs her ordinary household routine, upsets her menus and puts her recipes out of commission. It also renders inoperative some of her usual methods of economy at a time when rising food prices make economy more imperative than ever. To be patriotic and still live on one's income is a complex problem. This little book was started in response to a request for "a war message about food." It seemed to the author that a simple explanation of the part which some of our common foods play in our diet might be both helpful and reassuring. To change one's menu is often trying; to be uncertain whether the substituted foods will preserve one's health and strength makes adjustment doubly difficult. It is hoped that the brief chapters which follow will make it easier to "save wheat, meat, sugars and fats" and to make out an acceptable bill of fare without excessive cost. Thanks are due to the Webb Publishing Company, St. Paul, Minnesota, for permission to reprint three of the chapters, which appeared originally in The Farmer's Wife.

From the bestselling author of The Chilbury Ladies’ Choir comes an unforgettable novel of a BBC-sponsored wartime cooking competition and the four women who enter for a chance to better their lives. NAMED ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR BY GOOD HOUSEKEEPING • “This story had me so hooked, I literally couldn’t put it down.”—NPR Two years into World War II, Britain is feeling her losses: The Nazis have won battles, the Blitz has destroyed cities, and U-boats have cut off the supply of food. In an effort to help housewives with food rationing, a BBC radio program called The Kitchen Front is holding a cooking contest—and the grand prize is a job as the program’s first-ever female co-host. For four very different women, winning the competition would present a crucial chance to change their lives. For a young widow, it’s a chance to pay off her husband’s debts and keep a roof over her children’s heads. For a kitchen maid, it’s a chance to leave servitude and find freedom. For a lady of the manor, it’s a chance to escape her wealthy husband’s increasingly hostile behavior. And for a trained chef, it’s a chance to challenge the men at the top of her profession. These four women are giving the competition their all—even if that sometimes means bending the rules. But with so much at stake, will the contest that aims to bring the community together only serve to break it apart?

Excerpt from War Time Cookery: A Collection of Recipes That Will Not Only Reduce the High Cost of Living but Are Especially Adapted to Wheatless and Meatless Days As the necessity of the hour is for wheat, and every patriotic citizen of the United States is anxious to do his or her share to save even the two bushels, which will save the life of a soldier in France, the all-important question is the easiest and best way to do it. It is to be done in the kitchens of America. It is true that a certain percentage of the population buy their bread, and will be taken care of by federal decree, but the vast majority of Americans bake their own bread, and thousands who have heretofore bought their bread are now baking, for the first time in years. This is partly because the increased price of the factory loaf has made it worth their while, but the greatest reason, and the best one, is because they truly desire to help their beloved country by following the requests to save the wheat, that our soldiers may have enough strength to "go over the top." The women of America have not the slightest idea of allowing the world to say that because of their indifference, their negligence, their selfishness, this war may be lost. Even if it takes more time, more energy, more thought, the American women, "God bless them, every one," will right about face to the kitchen, there to fight the Hun, To Her is dedicated this slender sheaf of recipes, to aid in the battle. They are carefully gathered, from many friends and different sources, to whom thanks are hereby given. May they be an inspiration and a help in this hour of stress and need. Good Fare written by The Telegraph Home Cook and has been published by Pan Macmillan this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2011-07-06 with Cooking categories.

Originally published in 1941, this delightful little book is in fact the precursor to Good Eating, published in 1944 and recently reissued by Macmillan to great acclaim. Packed with practical, nutritious and frequently delicious recipes by the Daily Telegraph's Home Cook, this is both a charming piece of nostalgia and a riveting insight into how Britain really ate in wartime. More than that, though, it is almost a kitchen manifesto for the twenty-first century, with its emphasis on cooking without wasting food, fuel or time. The recipes are specifically geared to making the most of home-grown fruit and vegetables, of making a little meat go a long way, or of making unfamiliar cuts and methods fresh and appealing. There is also a special section offering readers' own recipes. As the Foreword says, 'There can be no better basis of cookery than that provided by generations of housewives who have brought homely fare to epicurean perfection.' With the motto, 'Simple but Better Fare is the aim of the New Cookery' we, too, can waste not want not and make do and mend just as our grandmothers and great-grandmothers did.
