'Reveals an until-now hidden history of women's self-portraiture. A gift that keeps on giving' ALI SMITH, NEW STATESMAN, Books of the Year 'A fascinating survey . . . Extraordinary' DAILY MAIL 'A bewitching, invigorating history' OLIVIA LAING 'Grips from the opening pages' FINANCIAL TIMES 'Important and brilliantly accessible' VOGUE Until the twentieth century, art history was, in the main, written by white men who tended to write about other white men. The idea that women in the West have always made art was rarely cited as a possibility. Yet they have - and, of course, continue to do so - often against tremendous odds, from laws and religion to the pressures of family and public disapproval. In THE MIRROR AND THE PALETTE, Jennifer Higgie introduces us to a cross-section of women artists who embody the fact that there is more than one way to understand our planet, more than one way to live in it and more than one way to make art about it. Spanning 500 years, biography and cultural history intertwine in a narrative packed with tales of rebellion, adventure, revolution, travel and tragedy enacted by women who turned their back on convention and lived lives of great resilience, creativity and bravery. This is a dazzlingly original and ambitious book by one of the most well-respected art critics at work today.

Shakespeare without Boundaries: Essays in Honor of Dieter Mehl offers a wide-ranging collection of essays written by an international team of distinguished scholars who attempt to define, to challenge, and to erode boundaries that currently inhibit understanding of Shakespeare, and to exemplify how approaches that defy traditional bounds of study and criticism may enhance understanding and enjoyment of a dramatist who acknowledged no boundaries in art. The Volume is published in tribute to Professor Dieter Mehl, whose critical and scholarly work on authors from Chaucer through Shakespeare to D. H. Lawrence has transcended temporal and national boundaries in its range and scope, and who, as Ann Jennalie Cook writes, has contributed significantly to the erasure of political boundaries that have endangered the unity of German literary scholarship and, more broadly, through his work for the International Shakespeare Association, to the globalization of Shakespeare studies. Published by University of Delaware Press. Distributed worldwide by Rutgers University Press.

The purpose of Art Therapy is to create an oasis of time to allow the brain and body to relax, recharge, and rejuvenate itself, while exploring the creative process of manipulating design elements such as line, shape, form, space, texture, tone, and color. Art Therapy can help people express themselves more freely, improve their mental health, and improve interpersonal relationships. The basis of Art Therapy is established on the idea that people can recover and feel better via artistic expression. There is increasing evidence in rehabilitation medicine and the field of neuroscience that art enhances brain function by impacting brain wave patterns, emotions and the nervous system. Art can also raise serotonin levels. These benefits don’t just come from making art, they also occur by experiencing art. As an Art Facilitator, I have thoroughly tested all the activities in this book over many years and with a variety of people. Many activities are structured to encourage team work, problem solving and communication as well as individual creativity in a relaxed, social environment. I was always surprised and impressed at the results. While each activity focuses on one of the main categories (brain, senses, memory, teamwork and loss) all of them involve a number of skills. The results can be different with each new group and even when presented to the same group again.
