Welcome to Yemen, where history comes alive. Its capital, Sana’a, is the oldest continually inhabited city in the world. The Queen of Sheba made her palace in the ruins of Marib, building a wealthy kingdom from the trade of native-grown frankincense and myrrh. The mysterious island of Socotra is home to plants that grow nowhere else in the world, like the exotic Dragon’s Blood tree. In this traditional Islamic country, women protect their modesty with the head-to-toe black abaya, while men wear a ceremonial dagger—the jambiya—at their belt. Isolated by jagged mountains atop the “Roof of Arabia,” Yemen’s tribal and traditional ways have stood the test of time. What happens when modern issues—oil, the dwindling water supply, women’s rights, Islamic terrorism—try to climb in?

Yemen written by Tim Mackintosh-Smith and has been published by Hachette UK this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2011-12-08 with Travel categories.

Arguably the most fascinating but least known country in the Arab world, Yemen has a way of attracting comment that ranges from the superficial to the wildly fictitious. In Yemen: Travels in Dictionary Land, Tim Mackintosh-Smith writes with an intimacy and depth of knowledge gained through over twenty years among the Yemenis. He is a travelling companion of the best sort - erudite, witty and eccentric. Crossing mountain, desert, ocean and three millennia of history, he portrays hyrax hunters and dhow skippers, a noseless regicide, and a sword-wielding tyrant with a passion for Heinz Russian salad. Yet even the ordinary Yemenis are extraordinary: their family tree goes back to Noah and is rooted in a land which, in the words of a contemporary poet, has become the dictionary of its people. Every page of this book is dashed - like the land it describes - with the marvellous.

Worldwide media may be focused on other world events, but God is very much aware of the hardship currently befalling the Yemeni people. Use this guide to help us, as a community of people who care about and pray for Yemen, to become more educated about ways we can pray and to help us pray, with one voice, for the people of Yemen. Rather thank walking in fear of manmade hardship, may the Yemeni people walk in fear of the Lord,

The Wild Fox Of Yemen written by Threa Almontaser and has been published by Pan Macmillan this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2021-07-08 with Poetry categories.

Poetry Book Society Wild Card Winner of the Walt Whitman Award of the Academy of American Poets 'It’s thrilling to discover such a staggeringly self-assured debut, to feel in the unmistakable presence of The Real Thing' Kaveh Akbar The Yemeni American poet Threa Almontaser’s incendiary debut asks how mistranslation can be a form of self-knowledge and survival. A love letter to the country and people of Yemen, a portrait of young Muslim womanhood in New York after 9/11, and an extraordinarily composed examination of what it means to carry in the body the echoes of what came before, Almontaser sneaks artifacts to and from worlds, repurposing language and adapting to the space between cultures. Speakers move with the force of what cannot be contained by the limits of the American imagination; instead, they invest in troublemaking and trickery, navigate imperial violence across multiple accents and anthems, and apply gang signs in henna, utilizing any means necessary to form a semblance of home. Fearlessly riding the tension between carnality and tenderness in the unruly human spirit, The Wild Fox of Yemen is one of the most original and bold debuts in recent years.

Peaks Of Yemen I Summon written by Steven C. Caton and has been published by Univ of California Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1990-12-11 with Social Science categories.

In this first full-scale ethnographic study of Yemeni tribal poetry, Steven Caton reveals an astonishingly rich folkloric system where poetry is both a creation of art and a political and social act. Almost always spoken or chanted, Yemeni tribal poetry is cast in an idiom considered colloquial and "ungrammatical," yet admired for its wit and spontaneity. In Yemeni society, the poet has power over people. By eloquence the poet can stir or, if his poetic talents are truly outstanding, motivate an audience to do his bidding. Yemeni tribesmen think, in fact, that poetry's transformative effect is too essential not to use for pressing public issues. Drawing on his three years of field research in North Yemen, Caton illustrates the significance of poetry in Yemeni society by analyzing three verse genres and their use in weddings, war mediations, and political discourse on the state. Moreover, Caton provides the first anthropology of poetics. Challenging Western cultural assumptions that political poetry can rarely rise above doggerel, Caton develops a model of poetry as cultural practice. To compose a poem is to construct oneself as a peacemaker, as a warrior, as a Muslim. Thus the poet engages in constitutive social practice. Because of its highly interdisciplinary approach, this book will interest a wide range of readers including anthropologists, linguists, folklorists, literary critics, and scholars of Middle Eastern society, language, and culture.

Arabia Without Sultans written by Fred Halliday and has been published by Saqi this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-10-04 with Political Science categories.

Fred Halliday writes: 'The Arab Middle East is probably the most misunderstood of all regions; the one with the longest history of contact with the west; yet it is probably the one least understood. Part of the misunderstanding is due to the romantic mythology that has long appeared to shroud the deserts of the peninsula. Where old myths have broken down, new ones have absorbed them or taken their place. Now the Sheikh of Arabia has stepped down from his camel. Instead, through the delusive lens of the 'energy crisis' he is seen to be riding a Cadillac and squeezing the powerless Western consumer of oil.' First published in the 1970s, Arabia Without Sultans retains its validity for the present as it analyses the Arabian peninsula and Iran within the global context of western post-colonial strategy and the political economy of oil. Halliday offers a thorough study of the history, the politi and the economi of this region in an ambitious, encompassing and entertaining manner. This classic work remains indispensable for students, academi, and all those who wish to have a greater understanding of the Arabian peninsula. 'A well-documented work, written by an author who knows the language of the area.' Maxime Rodinson 'Halliday provides an unusual view-point and a well-documented description of the history of these states.' Middle East International 'Anyone interested in this area will want to read this.' International Affairs 'A most valuable account of the developments which have taken place in the Arab Gulf over the last hundred years.' Tariq Ali
