Thea het swaar grootgeword – armoedig, onaansienlik en genadeloos gespot omdat sy, haar broer en susters saam met hul ouers in ‘n karavaan woon. Op hoërskool maak Thea vir die eerste keer dood – ‘n ouer meisie wat haar treiter. Die skool se tuinier word vir dié moord tronk toe gestuur. Thea gaan studeer, maar sy bly die buitestander. Sy raak verlief op Barry Buchner, ‘n gewilde, baie aantreklike mede-student. Maar toe sy swanger raak, wil hy niks verder met haar te doene hê nie. ‘n Mediese student help haar om van die baba ontslae te raak. Barry se verwerping krap ou wonde oop van hoe sy op skool ook vir die gek gehou is. Sy wil vergelding neem. Na universiteit kry sy ‘n nuwe identiteit en word Isabella. Sy trou met ‘n welaf man, Francois de Villiers en hy sorg dat sy die beste van alles het. Hy gee vir haar wat sy altyd begeer het: sekuriteit. Toe dié sekuriteit bedreig word, as gevolg van Francois wat in haar verlede begin krap, is sy bereid om te moor om dit af te weer. Sy skiet hom dood en laat dit lyk asof sy en Francois deur inbrekers oorval is. Sy spits haar toe om die mense op te spoor wat sy op haar lysie het: Barry, die mediese student (Trudi Rabie), Dina Reyneke (‘n balletjuffrou uit haar kinderdae teenoor wie sy ‘n wrok koester), asook haar geliefde oorlede suster se man, Donnie Dempsey. Sy is oortuig dat Donnie verantwoordelik was vir haar suster, Sonja, se skietdood. Isa se moordtog word die probleem van ‘n taakspan bestaande uit kaptein Werner de Wege, adjudant-offisier Lisamore Talakase, adjudant-offisier Johnny Delport, kaptein Stephan Schutte en adjudant-offisier Stan Lee. Stephan raak boonop smoorverlief op Isa. Die taakspan kry die wind van voor: Min leidrade, ‘n bevelvoerder wat nie aan hul kant is nie en ao Talakase wat ‘n beroerte kry. Eindelik ontdek Stephan dat die vrou wat hy liefhet, nie is wie sy voorgee om te wees nie en Isa word aangekeer en suksesvol vervolg. Ella Nel se karakter dien as teenstelling vir Thea/Isa. Ella se kinderjare was baie erger as Thea s’n. Tog wend sy haar nie tot geweld en moord nie. Die storie word uit die oogpunte van die onbekende boelie-slagoffer (Thea) vertel, uit die hoofverdagte Helgardt Hugo s’n, uit Ella Nel s’n en ook uit die speurders Werner de Wege, Lisamore Talakase en Stephan Schutte s’n.
