Dear haiku journal, I think I killed some people. That was no dog bite. This journal contains the poetic musings of a mailman who, after being bitten by what he thinks is a dog, discovers that he is actually now a werewolf. Wreaking havoc wherever he goes, he details his new life and transformations in the 5-7-5 syllable structure of haiku—his poetry of choice. Follow along as our werewolf poet slowly turns from a mostly normal man into the hairy beast that he cannot keep trapped inside. And watch out for carnage when he changes and becomes hungry. No toenail, no entrail, no pigtail will be left behind. And talk about wreaking havoc: His newfound claws and teeth have sent his clothing budget through the roof! He is in love with a woman on his route, but he has never had the courage to tell her. As he fights against his urges during each full moon, he discovers that succumbing to his primal instincts will not only bag him a good meal—it just might help him in his quest for love…Or maybe not.

If the perfect poetical metaphor for a zombie is, as is popularly held, the haiku, what are the appropriate metaphors for werewolves and vampires?Obviously, sonnets and limericks. At enormous personal risk, the author has collected these works from a wide array of supernatural sources, often at considerable danger to his own bodily and spiritual integrity.Actually, that last part isn't true. He's been on their side since the beginning.

More Brains... Some race. Some lurch. Others come crawling, limping, staggering—dragging themselves toward anyone who might still have a pulse. Zombies invade the island of Manhattan, and they are hungry. The story of the zombie apocalypse is told through the eyes of Dawn, a ten-year-old girl who has been well-schooled in the undead because of her father's love of zombie movies. As the zombies approach, Dawn and her dad realize the time has come to implement their Zombie Escape Plan, so they gather friends and escape to the Statue of Liberty. Only... the plan doesn't go quite as expected. Dawn documents their downfall in her haiku journal, where the limb-snapping, eye-popping, bone-crunching zombies eventually make her one of their own. In gory detail, and sometimes channeling her favorite poets, she describes the gruesome scenes before her—and her own frightening impulses.

Throughout history, the verse novel has persisted as a modest but noteworthy literary subgenre, from classic works like Eugene Onegin to contemporary volumes by Vikram Seth, Dorothy Porter, and Derek Walcott. In particular, the verse novel has emerged as a popular form for young adult readers, such as the Newbery Medal winner Out of the Dust by Karen Hesse. As this unique form continues to flourish, it merits closer examination. In The Verse Novel in Young Adult Literature, Brenna Friesner explores both the history and current use of the verse novel in teen fiction. Examining more than 220 titles written over the last few decades, Friesner discusses the verse novel’s evolution, analyzes key works, and considers how these novels can grapple with content that distinguishes them from traditional fiction. Though this study includes volumes written throughout history, its focus on contemporary novels further demonstrates the form’s relevance for today’s teens. By explaining its current popularity, this book acknowledges the verse novel’s potential to provide accessible, authentic stories for young adults to enjoy. The Verse Novel in Young Adult Literature will be of interest to librarians and teachers, as well as anyone wanting to learn more about this burgeoning aspect of young adult literature.

This award-winning collection was first published in 1987. The revised edition contains ten new haiku and senryu, which McLeod has selected for this current printing. In the everyday rush to get things done we often miss the poignant small things and meaningful moments that lie just beyond our everyday consciousness. Small Town/Big City is about those moments. Whether it is a prom tux flapping with excitement in a pickup window or a homeless man screaming at the mannequin they are uniquely captured by Donald McLeod's keenly perceptive eye and his command of the American haiku form. He grew up on a small farm near the town of Manchester, in rugged northern California's Mendocino County. He was an only child who spent most of his time playing in nature my himself. His parents didn't own a television, so the natural world around Donald was his entertainment. Most of his adult life was spent in Los Angeles where many of his "Big City" moments were captured. But the images from his country boyhood have remained with him, and are vividly recalled in his "Small Town" section of this book. McLeod has written over 3500 haiku and senryu and has been published in countless journals and anthologies in the United States, Canada, Japan and Europe. He works full time as a movement artist and butoh dancer, and is the owner of America's oldest Living Statue company. Many will remember Donald as the famous gorilla in the Samsonite TV commercials, or as the gorilla in Trading Places. As an actor he is best remembered for his role of Peter Pan's Shadow in the movie Hook, and as the werewolf TC, in the classic horror film The Howling. Donald McLeod also created the cover painting.

You hold in your hands a recently discovered poetry journal—the poetry journal of a vampire. William Butten was en route to a new land on the Mayflower when he was turned into a vampire by a fellow passenger, a beautiful woman named Katherine. These pages contain his heartbreaking story—the story of a vampire who has lived through (and perhaps caused) some of America's defining events. As he travels the country and as centuries pass, he searches for his lost love and records his adventures and misadventures using the form of poetry known as haiku. As Butten documents bloody wars, a certain tea party in Boston, living the high life during the Great Depression, two Woodstock festivals, the corruption of Emily Dickinson, and hanging out with Davy Crockett, he keeps to the classic 5-7-5 syllable structure of haiku. The resulting poems are hilarious, repulsive, oddly romantic, and bizarre. Read along, and you just may find a new appreciation for—and insight into—various events in American history. And blood.
