In jüngerer Zeit wird in den Sozialwissenschaften die Ansicht vertreten, Nationen seien Erzeugnisse der Moderne. Caspar Hirschis Theorie lautet gegenläufig, dass die Nationenbildung einen diskontinuierlichen Prozess von langer Dauer darstellt, der in Europa schon im Spätmittelalter eingesetzt hat. In Deutschland kommt den Humanisten besondere Bedeutung zu. Sie greifen die Propaganda der habsburgischen Kaiser an die Reichsstände auf und kombinieren sie mit politischen Diskursen der Antike. Damit begründen sie neue Formen der kollektiven Ehre und Ausgrenzung. Die eigene Gemeinschaft steht nicht mehr einer einheitlichen Masse von Heiden oder Barbaren gegenüber, sondern einer Vielzahl von Gemeinschaften, die kategorial gleich sind: Nationen. Dieses Gleich-zu-Gleich von autonomen Ehrgemeinschaften führt zu einem umfassenden Wettkampfkonzept. Diskurse entstehen, die die Überlegenheit der eigenen Nation beweisen sollen. Sie verleihen jeder Nation einen vermeintlich unverwechselbaren, realiter oft austauschbaren Charakter, der aus antiken Tugend- und Lasterkatalogen zusammengesetzt ist. Der humanistische Wettkampf der Nationen wird von der Konfessionalisierung abgebremst, trägt danach aber zum Siegeszug des modernen Nationalismus bei.

Based on extensive study of written and visual sources dating from the ancient to the early modern period, the author re-integrates the history of pre-modern Europe into the study of nationalism, describing it as an unintended and unavoidable consequence of the legacy of Roman imperialism in the Middle Ages. A critical reading of both literary and non-literary German texts published between 1490 and 1540 exposes a populist backlash against perceived social and political disruptions, the dramatic expansion of spatial and epistemological horizons, and the growth of global trade networks. These texts opposed the twin phenomena of pluralization and secularization, which promoted a Humanist tolerance for ambiguity, boosted globalization and spatial expansion around 1500, and promoted new ways of imagining the world. Part I considers threats to the political order and the protestations against them, above all a vigorous defense of the common good. Part II traces the intellectual and epistemological upheaval triggered by the spatial discoveries and the new methods of visual and verbal representation of space. Part III examines the nationalistic backlash triggered by the rising global trade and related abusive trading practices and by perceived undue foreign influences. It is the basic premise of this book that the texts examined here protested the observed disruptions of the status quo and sought to reestablish a stable imperial order in the face of political and social upheaval and of the felt cultural decline of the German nation.

Gegenstand der Arbeit ist die Interpretation patriotisch-allegorischer Heroiden des 16. und 17. Jahrhunderts, in welchen eine personifizierte Germania als Schreiberin oder Empfängerin figuriert. Diese werden hier erstmals zu einer Unterkategorie namens „Germania-Heroide" zusammengefasst. Im Zuge eines entstehenden Nationalbewusstseins nutzten seit ca. 1530 deutsche Humanisten und Barockdichter ausgiebig diese von Ovid begründete Textgattung, um ihren politischen Sorgen und Wünschen Ausdruck zu verleihen. So ließen sie angesichts einer Notlage (Türkenkrieg, Dreißigjähriger Krieg, andere Konflikte) eine leidende Frau Germania in einem Klagebrief einen oder mehrere Herrscher um die Abwehr einer äußeren Bedrohung und die Wiederherstellung der gestörten Eintracht im Inneren anflehen. Dabei beansprucht Germania für sich die Rolle einer zwar unglücklichen, aber autoritären Mutter und appelliert an den jeweiligen Adressaten, sie vor Misshandlungen und Verwüstungen durch äußere und innere Feinde zu schützen. Im Fokus der Arbeit steht die argumentative Funktion der Germania-Allegorie, die Spannung zwischen der Form der ovidischen Liebesdichtung und politisch-patriotischer Agitation.

This book deals with the life and work of the learned counsellor Johannes Hofmann von Lieser (Lysura) (a 1459), a close friend of Nicholas of Cusa, known for the political verse "Cusa et Lysura pervertunt omnia iura". The thesis is examining principally three topics: (1) First, the diplomatic career of Lieser, with a focus on his political role in the German politics towards the Council of Basle (1431-1447) and in the so called "Reichsreform" in the 1450s, and third on Liesers engagement as a professor of Canon Law at the University of Louvain from 1456 to 1458. (2) The second part analyses Liesers political speeches at the imperial diets of Regensburg and Frankfurt am Main (1454). Thematically, the analysis regards chiefly the "Reichsreform", but also the history of the Teutonic Order. Methodologically, two different aims of political speech are juxtaposed: on the one hand the rhetorical approach of German learned counsellors, on the other hand the humanistic one, represented by Enea Silvio Piccolomini, who revised one of Liesers speeches. Furthermore, it is shown that the diffusion of political texts in the fifteenth century depended - not exclusively, but also - on their applicability in oratory, as learned counsellors worked with these texts as professional orators. (3) The third part is dedicated to Liesers up to now completely unknown juridical work. Several "consilia" and a "repetitio" are analysed in order to show how Lieser worked as a jurist and how he the profile of learned counsellors as jurists can contribute to a better understanding of them as politicians.
