Excerpt from What Is History? That is to say, history, according to this view of the case, is meant to instruct. It should teach some lesson. The lesson may be a political one or a moral one or a religious one. But it is always history with a purpose, - its justification is ethical. Excerpt from The Relation of Literature to History The reading of literature as a necessary prelim inary to history Would, perhaps, more than anything else, act as a remedy for existing conditions. But a difficulty will, perhaps, be urged in convincing the Teutonic school of historians and their American followers, of the necessity, let alone the desirability, of such study; so profoundly is even gold distrusted by those who seek only to mine the quartz without separating it from the precious metal. Excerpt from History Primer In the elementary schools throughout this country, the general custom has been to postpone the study of history until the fifth or sixth year of the course. History is not entirely neglected in the earlier grades, but is taken up very informally. Even in the first grade our national holidays are made the occasion of simple exercises and oral lessons. The lives of our national heroes furnish considerable story material which is used to awaken patriotism as well as to arouse an interest in the history of our country. It has seemed to the authors that by the third or fourth year of school life it would be a distinct benefit to the pupil to have some of this historical material arranged in simple, interesting and somewhat connected form. This History Primer is an attempt to do this as well as to furnish a book which will serve as a transition to the more formal study of history in the higher grades. In accordance with universally accepted educational principles, the biographical method of treating the subject has been followed. The chronological sequence has been adhered to as far as possible, but has necessarily been subordinated to the biographical treatment wherever it conflicted with the latter. Excerpt from Studies in General History In teaching history in higher grades, three points must always be in mind: first, to give each student independent work; next, to subject the results of solitary, individual thought to the freest criticism and discussion in the class-room; last of all, the accepted results of the collective labor must be arranged in compact and logical order, and stowed away in memory. By the' solitary study of the individual, the mind gains power and originality; by the free lance in a free field of class-room work, the mind gains courage, sharpness, speed, and generous temper; by the strict, close sifting of study and discussion, it gains concentration, clearness, and breadth. Excerpt from The Study of History This generalization includes the spiritual as well as the physical life. Its application is to the subjective as well as the objective phase of universal experience. It recognizes what Emerson calls the one mind common to all individual men. The higher life is always conditioned upon the lower, so that the study of spiritual experience loses much of its value unless it is based upon material conditions and physical phenomena. It must also recognize the fact that the human mind uses the body as its instrument and that so far as our actual experience goes, we have no knowledge of any other means by which it may express itself. The appreciation of this relationship is indispensable to a sound view of the processes of education, considered in the larger sense. Upon it also depends the development of all the activities that are rational and wise in so connecting the past with the future in our thought that the lessons of the former may produce their due effect and yield their due results in the life of the latter. Human life in the spiritual aspect is not less an evolution than in the physical. We must learn not merely to accept this fact in its formal sense but also to apply it in good faith and in full reality to the problems of life. There is no personal element in the government of the spiritual realm any more than in the physical world. What we call moral laws are no less fixed and unchangeable than those which we designate as physical. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from A Short History of the World This short history OF the world is meant to be read straight forwardly almost as a novel is read. It gives in the most general way an account of our present knowledge of history, shorn of elabora tions and complications. It has been amply illustrated and every thing has been done to make it vivid and clear. From it the reader should be able to get that general View of history which is so neces sary a framework for the study of a particular period or the history of a particular country. It may be found useful as a preparatory excursion before the reading of the author's much fuller and more explicit Outline of History is undertaken. But its especial end is to meet the needs of the busy general reader, too driven to study the maps and time charts of that Outline in detail, Who Wishes to refresh and repair his faded or fragmentary conceptions of the great adventure of mankind. It is not an abstract or condensation of that former work. Within its aim the Outline admits of no further. Excerpt from A Text Book of American History History is a record Of events that has affected the social welfare. The record of an event is incomplete without an ex planation of its causes and effects. Interpretation is an essen tial part of history. The statement of a fact is not history, but journalism. Generalizing upon facts not themselves recited is philosophy. But history is neither journalism nor philosophy Nor is it a sum of' biographies. A biographical event ects the man's welfare. Because it is of human interest, it not therefore necessarily of historical importance. An epitome of facts, a philosophy of events, or a body of biographical details is not a history, or a school history, how ever it may be entitled. History deals with events of general human interest, tracing them in their sequence and. Order, Show ing their causes and effects. History is essentially a method Of revealing the past by finding its truth and explaining it. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from A History of English Literature for Secondary Schools By an arrangement of type the book is adapted for various courses of study. It will probably be enough for beginners to keep to the larger type, and it may even be advisable for the teacher to restrict their studies to a selection of the more important authors. In a book of this kind, involving the record of thou sands of facts, it is impossible that perfect accuracy can at once, if at last, be attained. It is as accurate, s0'far as it goes, as I have been able by a considerable amount of reading and study to make it. I shall be thankful to receive notes of correction, and any suggestions that I may be favored with will be carefully considered. In its preparation I have necessarily been indebted to many writers. Where my obligations are so manifold and various, it would be invidious to particularize them; but I cannot avoid expressing my indebtedness, direct or indirect, to the professorial teaching and published work of Professor Masson, of Edinburgh. Whatever of merit the book contains is largely due to him; the faults are my own. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
