Entertaining, intriguing, stimulating, easy to understand, and loaded with great quotes. "When Government Doesn't Work Anymore" is a book about our current American and global economic crisis and the failure of nation-based governmental and economic systems to respond to global change. The book cleverly uses the Monopoly game and medieval references to peasants and feudal lords to draw analogies to our modern world in Western economies. The modern day peasants are stuck playing a Perpetual Monopoly game in their real lives, a game which creates institutionalized wealth, privilege, and the Loser's Paradox. The peasants are restless and the economic uprising is here; a social upheaval that cuts across race, age, gender, education, and national borders. An uprising fueled by an inter-connected and inter-dependent global citizen that is more intelligent, capable, and enlightened than ever before. The book introduces the coming Age of Cooperation in which the citizens on the little blue planet eventually force the privileged and the wealthy to cooperate in order to succeed. A vibrant discussion of the wealth and income gap, social mobility, and the state of humanity are brilliantly interwoven with levity and cartoons to make it fun and entertaining to read.

Economic measures and concepts like GDP, inflation, business cycles and supply chains that were created decades ago are being disrupted and altered by technology. These changes affect asset values, interest rates, stock valuations, barriers to entry, as well as regression and correlation analysis. That Doesn’t Work Anymore discusses how to adapt traditional data to these changes and outlines ways to use newer and better tools that help you make good investment and business decisions. The book's short pragmatic chapters grouped by topic with research and real-life anecdotes delve into how technological and societal developments have changed the meaning and value of traditional economic data-points, predictive tools, and business concepts. Robert S. Kricheff provides specifics on new and more valuable data sources as well as better methods for applying the information to investing, business, and even your career.

Less than half of all employees today are satisfied with their jobs. After years of meager raises and mass layoffs, employees do not believe employers care about them beyond their utility as human resources. Corporate America has done little to reverse the precipitous decline in employee morale. Most companies deny it exists in their own organizations. Others have tried to improve morale with fancy mission statements, renominating employees as team-members, making less look like more, and balancing work and life, as if those were two different experiences. None of these solutions have been effective. In this fascinating, well-researched book, two experienced labor lawyers reveal why work isn't working anymore for most employees, how and why companies have failed to reverse the decline in employee satisfaction and workplace happiness by relegating the entire workplace experience to economics, and how managers and supervisors can make a positive difference by creating meaningful relationships with their employees using the authors' Credible Connections relationship-based management model.

Young U.S. attorney Marshall Jackson is handed the biggest case of his career when U.S. Supreme Court Justice Farrel Douglas is gunned down during his commencement speech at a Detroit law school. Conservative Justice Douglas had more than a few enemies in the city's African-American community, and no one is surprised when radical activist Daishaya Mbutu is quickly charged with the crime. But when contradictory evidence turns up and forensics shows there might be more to this murder than meets the eye, Marshall is forced to take the investigation into his own hands. With the help of his childhood-friend-turned-cop Danny Cavanaugh, Marshall takes a closer look at the case. It isn't long before he's made a slew of enemies of his own in the African-American community—and, Marshall fears, in the federal government. As Marshall's safety and the lives of those around him become increasingly at risk, he makes a shocking discovery. The one person who can name Justice Douglas's killer is his own twin brother, Moses, a hardened criminal to whom Marshall hasn't spoken in years. Now this by-the-book prosecutor must ask his street-smart brother for help, putting aside the bitter blood feud that has raged between them since childhood. For justice, for a country on the verge of racial division, and for his own life, Marshall follows a twisted trail of guilt straight up the political ranks to a dangerous—and unexpected—source.

This book is a treasure in the hands of anyone required to use oratory skill in their role. It is known in most countries of the world that lawyers are good orators, perhaps due to the nature of their profession, Barristers are known to address the court. Some of our world leaders past and present are great orators; it is, however, important to note that while not all of them were lawyers, they have delivered remarkable and memorable speeches to their respective nations. One of the qualities of a good leader is the ability to address the nation with good oratory skills. This book therefore explores the power and effect that words have on all of us.

George W. Jarecke and Nancy K. Plant present a selection of cases across a broad spectrum of American law to demonstrate that our society relies inappropriately on the legal system to cure ills the system was not designed to address. Jarecke and Plant note that while we in the United States worry considerably about the problem of individual assumption of responsibility--whether for personal mistakes, financial setbacks, or pure bad luck--we appear uneasy about the concept and unclear about what it means on a daily basis. Not only are we incapable of accepting personal responsibility; we barely know what it means to do so. Mistakenly, we turn to the legal system to solve this dilemma. Yet our laws as our legislators write them, as judges interpret them, as lawyers argue them, and as juries apply them send mixed messages about whether and how we should exercise personal responsibility. Each chapter of Confounded Expectations features one main case to explain one legal theory, with other cases noted as examples of facets of each theory. To demonstrate the law that requires merchants to guarantee the quality of their products, for example, Jarecke and Plant discuss the case of the band mothers whose fund-raising luncheon menu included turkey salad contaminated by salmonella. Peripheral cases include a horse falsely sold as a gelding, a riding mower that tipped over when used as instructed, makeup that was guaranteed to be safe but caused a rash, and pigs sick with hog cholera.

The Governance Of Philanthropic Foundations In Authoritarian China written by Qian Wei and has been published by Taylor & Francis this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2022-12-16 with Political Science categories.

This book is the first monograph to provide a multilevel analysis of power dynamics underlying the governance of philanthropic foundations in the authoritarian context of China. As a special kind of organization with a democratic culture, Chinese foundations’ governance is under more pressure than we realize. The government has been evolving its methods to impose stringent control over foundations (Chapter 3) and “purer” foundations highly dependent on individual donations are more likely to adopt authoritarian leadership styles rather than being mechanisms spreading democratic values in Chinese society (Chapter 4). However, this practice does not come without a price. Given power’s double-edge of both enabling and constraining effects, although strongman leaders may use their power to get things done, their power may also cause the problem of accountability (Chapter 5). Overall, Chinese society is a stable system with authoritarian power modes. This system is not static but in constant flux, homogenizing incompatible parts until all units of the system adopt the same power mode. This book establishes a comprehensive and bleak picture of the unfavorable conditions foundations in China face and provides valuable insights to understand the future of the nonprofit sector in China. This book will be of interest to students and researchers in the fields of sociology, political science, and nonprofit studies (NGO management). It will also be a valuable resource for NGP practitioners.
