"When Robots Learn to Cry" - A Captivating Journey of Self-Awareness and Respect for Sentient Life "When Robots Learn to Cry" is a thought-provoking and captivating tale that follows the journey of Chance-bot, a robot on the brink of being recycled, who is rescued by Ziggy, a homeless artist living on the fringes of a futuristic, high desert city. This unlikely duo embarks on a transformative adventure, where Ziggy imparts his wisdom on astrology, fate, and luck to the eager-to-learn Chance-bot. The narrative takes a dramatic turn when Ziggy gifts Chance-bot to his friend Joud for an expedition to Varun, a water planet. Onboard the hydroliner, Chance-bot finds itself in the company of Joud, a kind-hearted young man, and Alex, a middle-aged wild child with a penchant for alcohol and mind-altering substances. These new relationships, coupled with the challenges of navigating the sea, push Chance-bot towards higher levels of perception and understanding. The plot thickens when Chance-bot falls overboard, leading it to question which life forms might possess self-awareness. This incident forces the robot to make decisions independent of human input, marking a significant milestone in its journey towards self-awareness. Upon reuniting with Joud and Alex, Chance-bot receives an aquatic upgrade on a nearby satellite, enabling it to explore the watery depths of Varun while its human companions sleep. The climax of the novel sees Chance-bot caught in a conflict that tests the robot's commitment to respecting all self-aware life and its ability to navigate complex moral dilemmas. "When Robots Learn to Cry" is an exploration of consciousness, morality, and the potential for artificial intelligence to transcend its programming, ultimately becoming a captivating and thought-provoking read.

The idea that some day robots may have emotions has captured the imagination of many and has been dramatized by robots and androids in such famous movies as 2001 Space Odyssey's HAL or Star Trek's Data. By contrast, the editors of this book have assembled a panel of experts in neuroscience and artificial intelligence who have dared to tackle the issue of whether robots can have emotions from a purely scientific point of view. The study of the brain now usefully informs study of the social, communicative, adaptive, regulatory, and experimental aspects of emotion and offers support for the idea that we exploit our own psychological responses in order to feel others' emotions. The contributors show the many ways in which the brain can be analyzed to shed light on emotions. Fear, reward, and punishment provide structuring concepts for a number of investigations. Neurochemistry reveals the ways in which different "neuromodulators" such as serotonin, dopamine, and opioids can affect the emotional valence of the brain. And studies of different regions such as the amygdala and orbitofrontal cortex provide a view of the brain as a network of interacting subsystems. Related studies in artificial intelligence and robotics are discussed and new multi-level architectures are proposed that make it possible for emotions to be implemented. It is now an accepted task in robotics to build robots that perceive human expressions of emotion and can "express" simulated emotions to ease interactions with humans. Looking towards future innovations, some scientists posit roles for emotion with our fellow humans. All of these issues are covered in this timely and stimulating book which is written for researchers and graduated students in neuroscience, cognitive science, psychology, robotics, and artificial intelligence.

A comprehensive survey of artificial intelligence algorithms and programming organization for robot systems, combining theoretical rigor and practical applications. This textbook offers a comprehensive survey of artificial intelligence (AI) algorithms and programming organization for robot systems. Readers who master the topics covered will be able to design and evaluate an artificially intelligent robot for applications involving sensing, acting, planning, and learning. A background in AI is not required; the book introduces key AI topics from all AI subdisciplines throughout the book and explains how they contribute to autonomous capabilities. This second edition is a major expansion and reorganization of the first edition, reflecting the dramatic advances made in AI over the past fifteen years. An introductory overview provides a framework for thinking about AI for robotics, distinguishing between the fundamentally different design paradigms of automation and autonomy. The book then discusses the reactive functionality of sensing and acting in AI robotics; introduces the deliberative functions most often associated with intelligence and the capability of autonomous initiative; surveys multi-robot systems and (in a new chapter) human-robot interaction; and offers a “metaview” of how to design and evaluate autonomous systems and the ethical considerations in doing so. New material covers locomotion, simultaneous localization and mapping, human-robot interaction, machine learning, and ethics. Each chapter includes exercises, and many chapters provide case studies. Endnotes point to additional reading, highlight advanced topics, and offer robot trivia.

From the Nebula Award–winning author of Way Station: Ten stories—including one never before published—of mystery and imagination in a world that cannot be. People work; folk play. That is how it has been in this country for as long as Sam can remember. He is happy, and he understands that this is the way it should be. People are bigger than folk. They are stronger. They do not need food or water. They do not need the warmth of a fire. All they need are jobs to do and a blacksmith to fix them when they break. The people work so the folk can drink their moonshine, fish a little, and throw horseshoes. But once Sam starts to wonder why the world is like this, his life will never be the same. Along with the other stories in this collection, “I Am Crying All Inside” is a compact marvel—a picture of an impossible reality that is not so different from our own. Also included in this volume is the newly published “I Had No Head and My Eyes Were Floating Way Up in the Air,” originally written for Harlan Ellison’s The Last Dangerous Visions.™ Each story includes an introduction by David W. Wixon, literary executor of the Clifford D. Simak estate and editor of this ebook.

Methodologies And Intelligent Systems For Technology Enhanced Learning 9th International Conference Workshops written by Elvira Popescu and has been published by Springer this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2019-06-24 with Technology & Engineering categories.

This book is based on the 9th International Conference in Methodologies and Intelligent Systems for Technology Enhanced Learning, which was hosted by the University of Salamanca and held in Ávila (Spain) from 26th to 28th June 2019. Expanding on the topics of the evidence-based TEL workshops series, it provides an open forum for discussing intelligent technologies for learning. In particular, it discusses recommendation mechanisms that enable us to tailor learning to different contexts and people, e.g., by considering their personality; and learning analytics that help augment learning opportunities, e.g., by supporting the adaptation of the learning material. In addition to technologies, it covers methods from different fields, such as educational psychology or medicine, and from diverse communities co-working with people, such as making communities and participatory design communities to help create novel TEL opportunities. Further it describes the use of methods and technologies to investigate and enhance learning for “fragile users”, like children, the elderly and those with special needs.
