While the war brings out the best in most, it brings out the worst in others, as a young mother soon discovers... A gripping saga of life for those left behind during the war, Pam Evans' When the Boys Come Home is a heart-breaking story of love, family and tragedy that won't fail to enthral. Perfect for fans of Rosie Goodwin and Cathy Sharp. As German bombs wreak havoc on West London, for Morgan's Dairy it's business as usual. But when owner Dai Morgan is killed in an air raid, his daughter Megan is determined to continue in her father's footsteps and she braves the ravaged streets alone to do his milk round by horse and cart. Megan finds comfort in the knowledge that her twin girls are tucked away in a Welsh village, but she worries about her husband, Will, abroad with his platoon. And when Will's best friend, Doug Reynolds, returns, wounded and disfigured, she doesn't hesitate to take the poor man in. However, Doug is not the man she thinks he is. And when the boys come home, Megan has battle scars she can't allow Will to see... What readers are saying about When the Boys Come Home: 'Please, buy or read this "feel good" novel. I am a fan of Pamela Evans anyway, but this one manages to grip the imagination, is hard to put down and keeps the reader up to and including the last page. Heartily recommended!' 'Five stars'

This is a new edition of this classic book which includes, in its over 700 postcards, many new, powerful propaganda images from nations on both sides of this epic conflict. Here are cards from the Queen's Collection, cards from America, Australia, Austria, Belgium, Britain, Bulgaria, Canada, Czechoslovakia, Egypt, France, Germany, Holland, Italy, Rumania, Salonika, Serbia... All are faithfully reproduced from the original, whether in dramatic black and white or in exuberant colour and they are all at least 100 years old. But this is not just a picture book.??Here is a rich treasure trove to be dipped into for dilettante pleasure or to be read seriously as a thematic and contemporary history of the war. These cards have been collected over many years and a good number are rare and extremely valuable, both intrinsically and for the fascinating information contained in the informative running text and in the thoughtful captions (an example appears below, just one of the over 700). ??This is essential reading for anyone who wishes to sense the feelings and emotions of those who lived through, and fought in, the First World War; readers will appreciate the Twitter-like brevity of the captions, the power of the images and enjoy the chase to understand what lies behind them.???This handsome and fascinating book uses hundreds of the immensely popular picture postcards of the '14-'18 period to document the course and effects of the Great War, with all its dramatis personae, its humour, suffering, patriotism, sentimentality and fervour.

Ever since the signing of the Armistice in 1918, theatre has played an important part in reflecting the experience of the 'war to end all wars'. But on the Home Front, what role did those involved with British theatre play during those tumultuous four years and three months? Till the Boys Come Home salutes British theatre in wartime, when theatres became powerful generators for escapism, for stirring patriotism, for sharing experiences of loss and joy – and for raising vast amounts of charity money. It brings to life a Britain where theatre-going peaked in popularity, yet became full of the curious contradictions bred by war. Richly illustrated with original programmes, posters and ephemera, author and critic Roger Foss reveals a theatrical powerhouse, where all sections of the profession – from grand Shakespearian knights to lowly concert party artistes – were doing their bit, both at home and on the front line.

This historic book may have numerous typos and missing text. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1919 edition. Excerpt: ... CHAPTER II When the stuffy little train drew up at the familiar platform the returning soldier, faint at heart, grew pale. The long, dreary ride down the valley had been a continual strain upon his tired nerves, and he braced himself against the shock of change from battlefield to peaceful home surroundings. Years seemed to have gone by so full had been the days of his absence. But it was the same old town--thank God!--and the same station. Also, the same thoroughfare that the natives called Main Street. Then suddenly it came over him how ageing had been the struggle "over there." A boy on going away--now a man. In open-mouthed wonder, Rodgers, owner of the tumbledown jitney, seized his baggage and dragged him bodily into the back seat. The faithful driver had undergone no change. He was still Rodgers with the endless cough. The Boy shook hands with him heartily. "You most certainly have changed, Mister George," remarked the cabman between coughing spells. Then there was a painful silence. The Boy became conscious that Rodgers was gazing at his empty sleeve. Ah, yes--the sleeve about which he had been answering questions for the past month. Every person who sat beside him in any public conveyance seemed to consider it a duty to stare at him, and then to interrogate him. "Oh, I lost it at Vimy Ridge," said he mechanically, in answer to the look in Rodgers' eyes, now filmed with strange tears. Then the car moved away in a cloud of dust, and without a word from the cabman. The Boy had many a tug at his heart as he passed up Main Street. There was the drug store where he always joined the evening crowds, also where he had taken the Girl on a certain memorable first occasion and ordered ice cream sodas "for two." Her image, always hovering, ...
