Have you ever wondered how whiskey came about? It has roots that go a long way into the past, and in this book, the author tells us how the various discoveries came together – first of all to obtain alcohol from wine, but in Ireland, where grapes do not grow, from ale. The monks who first carried out this experiment wanted alcohol for medical purposes because the monks in those days were also the physicians. Inevitably, the alcohol was tasted, and though at that time it must have been harsh in flavour, the feeling of well-being and warmth it created could not be missed. At first, it was flavoured with spices, notably saffron, which gave it a beautiful yellow/orange colour. Later it was discovered that storage in an oak cask not only produced the amber colour of whiskey today but did wonderful things to the taste. From then onwards, all additions other than water to adjust the alcoholic strength and some caramel to standardise colouring were prohibited by law. Whiskey distilleries were recognised by their chimneys indicating their voracious use of fossil fuels, but today distilleries are being converted to be 100% fossil-fuel-free and still produce the same beautiful amber liquid.

The publication of das Whisky Lexikon in 1999 was a milestone in whisky reference books. For the first time a truly prodigious reference work covering brands, personalities, blends, distilleries, companies and technical terms was available to the whisky enthusiast. Over 1800 terms are cross-referenced and fully detailed in this near 250,000 word reference work. NWP moved quickly to secure exclusive world English-language rights to expand its Angels' Share whisky list. This is a typical entry: Adams Canadian blend from Seagram. This brand was created by Samuel Bronfman after he had bought United Distillers Ltd in 1953 and changed its name to Thomas Adams Distillery. The new name was a reminder of a whisky pioneer whose distillery was licensed in 1802. There are several versions: Adams Double Distilled contains at least five-year-old rye whiskies, Adams Private Stock contains six-year-olds and Adams Antique is twice as old again. There is also a Four Roses, which shouldn't be mistaken for the Bourbon which, confusingly, is also from the house of Seagram. The Adams whiskies are rarely found outside Canada. This book will be the first reference point for the trade, historian and lover

New in Paper Whisky is widely considered the finest spirit in the world--and this is the definitive history of the "water of life." Written by the editor of Whisky magazine, and Scotland's leading writer on the subject, it's the perfect blend of anecdotes and pioneering research. Superb illustrations help tell an intriguing story that goes back as far as 2000 B.C., and that includes a cast of fascinating characters who smuggled, bribed, conspired, and advertised with a vengeance to turn whisky from a common man's drink into a proud part of the Scottish national heritage. Unfolding decade by decade, it presents names such as John Walker and Sons, Glenlivet, and Macallan, providing a treasure trove for the whisky connoisseur or anyone interested in a really good read.
