Scholars have increasingly been investigating human sexu- ality as an important field of social history in particular national cultures. This volume examines both continuities and changing patterns of sexual behavior in Austria. Sexuality in Austria reflects the broad variety of such recent research. Maria Mesner surveys the growing number of sex counseling organizations in interwar Vienna, some driven by eugenics, others by social concerns. Ties with Margaret Sanger's birth control movement in the U.S. are also documented. Ingrid Bauer and Renate Huber are the first scholars to treat the "foreign encounters" between Austrian women and occupation soldiers during the postwar quadripartite Austrian occupation regime in a comparative framework. Franz Eder traces the growing presence of sexual issues in post-World War II popular media and suggests parallels with the German case. Marcel Scheffknecht shows how Austria was not spared the changes in sexual mores during the "sexual revolution" of the 1960s and 1970s. Matti Bunzl analyses the legal penalties for homosexuality in postwar Austria and the liberation of the gay movement as a result of EU pressures after Austria joined the European Union in 1995. Peter Judson analyzes the major influence of the Catholic Church on Austrian sexuality through the lens of a recent gay and sex abuse scandals in the church hierarchy. In "romancing the foreigner" Julia Woesthoff analyzes the growing presence of foreign workers (gastarbeiter) in postwar Austria and their sexual contacts with natives. In a "non-topical essay" Katharina Wegan views the Austrian historical memory of the Austrian State Treaty through the fiftieth anniversary celebrations in 2005. Schnitzler, one of the most prolific Austrian writers of the 20th century, ruthlessly dissected his society's erotic posturing and phobias about sex and death. His most penetrating analyses include Lieutenant Gustl, the first stream-of-consciousness novella in German; Reigen, a devastating cycle of one-acts mapping the social limits of a sexual daisy-chain; and Der Weg ins Freie, a novel that combines a love story with a discussion ofthe roadblocks facing Austria's Jews. Today, his popularity is reflected by new editions and translations and by adaptations for theater, television, and film by artists such as Tom Stoppard and Stanley Kubrick. This book examinesSchnitzler reception up to 2000, beginning with the journalistic reception of the early plays. Before being suspended by a decade of Nazism, criticism in the 1920s and 30s emphasized Schnitzler's determinism and decadence. Not until the early 60s was humanist scholarship able to challenge this verdict by pointing out Schnitzler's ethical indictment of impressionism in the late novellas. During the same period, Schnitzler, whom Freud considered his literary "Doppelgänger," was often subjected to Freudian psychoanalytical criticism; but by the 80s, scholarship was citing his own thoroughgoing objections to such categories. Since the 70s, Schnitzler's remonstrance toward the Austrianestablishment has been examined by social historians and feminist critics alike, and the recently completed ten-volume edition of Schnitzler's diary has met with vibrant interest. Modern European literature has traditionally been seen as a series of attempts to assert successive styles of writing as 'new'. In this groundbreaking study, Ben Hutchinson argues that literary modernity can in fact be understood not as that which is new, but as that which is 'late'. Exploring the ways in which European literature repeatedly defines itself through a sense of senescence or epigonality, Hutchinson shows that the shifting manifestations of lateness since romanticism express modernity's continuing quest for legitimacy. Doch wie entstand diese Gruppe junger Autoren und Künstler? Wer waren die Personen, die sich „Jung-Wiener“ nannten und damit 1890 die Wiener Moderne einläuteten? Zuerst stellten sich die Jung-Wiener nicht als das dar, was sie später waren. Die Gruppe gab es zwar, aber den Namen prägten vor allem Arthur Schnitzler, der schon 1891 in seine Aufzeichnungen von Jung-Wien spricht, und Hermann Bahr, um den sich die Gruppe auch bildete. Doch ist Hermann Bahr damit der Gründer der Jung-Wiener und somit auch Initiator der Wiener Moderne? Dass man dies so nicht behaupten kann, darin sind sich mittlerweile alle Experten einig. Selbst Bahr beanspruchte das in seiner „Autobiographischen Skizze“ niemals. Er schrieb nur: „Meine Wochenschrift ”Die Zeit“ tat tüchtig mit, und ich hatte das Glück, Olbrich, Klimt und Mahler zu erleben.“ Wenn jemand die Gründung Jung-Wiens für sich beanspruchen kann, dann ist es Eduard Michael Kafka, der Hauptherausgeber, der „Moderne[n] Dichtung“, deren erste Ausgabe am 1. Januar 1890 erschien. Mit diesem runden Datum wird üblicherweise der Beginn der Wiener Moderne assoziiert. Natürlich muss man im Zusammenhang mit diesem Zeitabschnitt auch noch andere Namen nennen. Trotz großer Vielseitigkeit kann man die Wiener Moderne in drei größere Bereiche einteilen: Literatur, Kunst und Musik. Doch was hat diese Epoche in diesen Bereichen und auch gesellschaftlich wirklich verändert oder revolutioniert?

In Alois Riegl in Vienna 1875-1905: An Institutional Biography, Diana Cordileone applies standard methods of cultural and intellectual history for close readings of Riegl?s published texts, several of which are still unavailable in English. Further, the author compares Riegl?s work to several of the early works of Friedrich Nietzsche that Riegl is known to have read before 1878. Using archival and other primary sources this study also illuminates the institutional conflicts and imperatives that shaped Riegl?s oeuvre. The result is a multi-layered philosophical, cultural and institutional history of this art historian?s work of the fin-de-si?e that demonstrates his close relationship to several of the significant actors in Vienna at the end of the nineteenth century, an epoch of innovation, culture wars and political uncertainty. The book is particularly devoted to explaining how Riegl?s theories of art were shaped by debates outside the purview of the academic art historian. Its focal point is the Austrian Museum for Art and Industry, where he worked for 13 years, and it presents a new interpretation of Riegl based upon his early exposure to Nietzsche.
