A prominent question that the author tries to find an answer to is, how does specific physics emerge from the abstract mathematics of 4-manifolds? The key idea to that question is Smooth Quantum Gravity, a theory based on very few principles and therefore easily understood. Through the application of this theory, a connection between geometry/topology and quantum physics is created. In The Wild Fractal Nature of Spacetime, Dr Torsten Asselmeyer-Maluga explains Smooth Quantum Gravity and applies it to the standard cosmological model. Through that, the inflationary expansion of the cosmos is introduced, the cosmological constant is calculated, dark matter is shown as a direct consequence and the Big Bang is described as well. The entire concept of the cosmos is based on a model of spacetime, which is based on 4 simple axioms and thus uniquely defines it. As a result, measurable quantities such as the inflation rate and the cosmological constant can be calculated and compared with the measurement results of the PLANCK mission, for instance. However, the results on inflation theory, the cosmological constant and dimensional reduction can be understood and used independently from an exotic smoothness structure - no prior knowledge on the topic is required. The author recommends his book to scientists and interested students who see the world through the lens of geometry and physics.

The beauty of plants has attracted the attention of mathematicians for Mathematics centuries. Conspicuous geometric features such as the bilateral sym and beauty metry of leaves, the rotational symmetry of flowers, and the helical arrangements of scales in pine cones have been studied most exten sively. This focus is reflected in a quotation from Weyl [159, page 3], "Beauty is bound up with symmetry. " This book explores two other factors that organize plant structures and therefore contribute to their beauty. The first is the elegance and relative simplicity of developmental algorithms, that is, the rules which describe plant development in time. The second is self-similarity, char acterized by Mandelbrot [95, page 34] as follows: When each piece of a shape is geometrically similar to the whole, both the shape and the cascade that generate it are called self-similar. This corresponds with the biological phenomenon described by Herman, Lindenmayer and Rozenberg [61]: In many growthprocesses of living organisms, especially of plants, regularly repeated appearances of certain multicel lular structures are readily noticeable. . . . In the case of a compound leaf, for instance, some of the lobes (or leaflets), which are parts of a leaf at an advanced stage, have the same shape as the whole leaf has at an earlier stage. New computational design tools have evolved rapidly and been increasingly applied in the field of design in recent years, complimenting and even replacing the traditional design media and approaches. Design as both the process and product are changing due to the emergence and adoption of these new technologies. Understanding and assessing the impact of these new computational design environments on design and designers is important for advancing design in the contemporary context. Do these new computational environments support or hinder design creativity? How do those tools facilitate designers’ thinking? Such knowledge is also important for the future development of design technologies. Research shows that design is never a mysterious non-understandable process, for example, one general view is that design process shares a common analysis-synthesis-evaluation model, during which designers interact between design problem and solution spaces. Understanding designers’ thinking in different environments is the key to design research, education and practice. This book focuses on emerging computational design environments, whose impact on design and designers have not been comprehensively and systematically studied. It comprises three parts. The history and recent developments of computational design technologies are introduced in Part I.
