Welche Bedarfe, Ideen und Lösungen sehen hochqualifizierte Migrant*innen für eine nachhaltige Stadtentwicklung? Inwiefern eignet sich Urban Design Thinking als ko-kreative Methode und Impuls für städtische Transformationsprozesse? Was bringen solche ko-kreativen Stadtentwicklungsprozesse mit bestimmten Bevölkerungsgruppen einer Stadt wie Mannheim und wie fügen sie sich in die Stadtpolitik ein? Wie kann man andere Städte dafür interessieren, was im Mannheimer Reallabor erprobt und erarbeitet wird? Diese neugierigen Fragen waren der Ausgangspunkt zu einem Forschungs- und Entwicklungsprozess, der sich zwischen 2016 und 2019 in der Stadt Mannheim im Rahmen des Forschungsprojekts Migrants4Cities. Hochqualifizierte Migrant*innen gestalten Zukunftsstädte entfaltete. Migrants4Cities hat mit Urban Design Thinking in einem ko-kreativen Arbeitsprozess zu zentralen Stadtentwicklungsthemen in Mannheim real experimentiert und versteht sich daher als Reallabor. Die Antworten, die das Verbundteam aus der Stadt Mannheim, dem Fachgebiet für Bestandsentwicklung und Erneuerung von Siedlungseinheiten der Technischen Universität Berlin und dem inter 3 Institut für Ressourcenmanagement auf die eingangs formulierten Fragen gefunden hat, werden in diesem Sammelband präsentiert. Das Buch zeigt auf, warum Ko-Kreation auch in der Stadtentwicklung zunehmend an Bedeutung gewinnt und wie mit Urban Design Thinking solche ko-kreativen, am Bedarf der Menschen ausgerichtete Arbeitsprozesse im städtischen Kontext strukturiert und umgesetzt werden können. Es bietet anschauliche Einblicke, wie Urban Design Thinking im Projekt Migrants4Cities eingesetzt wurde, welche Personen in die Arbeit eingebunden waren, was den Arbeitsprozess ausgezeichnet hat und welche Ergebnisse erarbeitet wurden. Basierend auf diesen Erfahrungen wird der ko-kreative Ansatz in Mannheim reflektiert in Bezug auf: die Besonderheiten in der Anwendung von Urban Design Thinking, die Einbindung solcher Vorgehensweisen in die Routinen städtischer Governance, die Mobilisierung und Einbindung der Migrant*innen sowie den Transfer von Ergebnissen in andere Städte. Ermöglicht wurde Migrants4Cities durch die Förderung des Bundesministeriums für Bildung und Forschung im Rahmen des Programms Nachhaltige Transformation urbaner Räume. Which needs, ideas and solutions do migrants identify for a sustainable urban development? Is Urban Design Thinking a suitable method to enable co-creation in urban transformation processes? What are the effects and benefits of such co-creative approaches in a city like Mannheim with its very diverse population, and how do they practically fit into urban governance? How can the interest of other cities be aroused for what is happening in an experimental setting like in Mannheim? These curious questions have been the starting point for a research and development process that took place in Mannheim between 2016 and 2019 within the project Migrants4Cities. High-qualified migrants design future cities. The project experimented with Urban Design Thinking in a real-life, co-creative urban laboratory on key challenges of urban development. This book presents answers to the questions mentioned above, that have been developed by the project team consisting of the City of Mannheim, the Chair for Urban Renewal and Sustainable Development at TU Berlin and inter 3 Institute for Resource Management. The book describes why co-creation gains importance in urban development and how Urban Design Thinking offers tools to structure implement such human-centred approaches focussing on the needs of the people also in urban settings. It offers illustrative insights how Urban Design Thinking was applied in the sub-projects of Migrants4Cities, which persons were involved, what characterized the working process and which results were elaborated. Based on these experiences the authors reflect the co-creative approach concerning: the peculiarities of applying Urban Design Thinking;the integration of such methods into the routines of urban governance;the mobilization and integration of migrants;and the transfer of results to other cities. The project was funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research within the program of Sustainable Transformation of Urban Areas.

„Urbane Ko-Kreation“ ist in aller Munde. Doch wie lässt sich diese im Stadtplanungsalltag praktisch erreichen? Sie erfordert Methoden, die der Komplexität von Städten und ihrer Entwicklung Rechenschaft tragen und die zugleich so angelegt sind, dass jeder Mensch mitarbeiten kann. Die Methode Urban Design Thinking (UDT) vermag es, im Rahmen ko-kreativer Stadtplanung und -entwicklung die Bedarfe von Nutzer:innen in die Entwicklung ihrer Stadt einzubeziehen und somit Ideen für komplexe städtische Herausforderungen zu finden. Konzipiert wurde sie ab 2015 vom Fachgebiet Bestandsentwicklung und Erneuerung von Siedlungseinheiten an der Technischen Universität Berlin, ausgehend von der Design Thinking Methode der Standford University. Angewendet wurde UDT bereits in einer Vielzahl von Studien- und Forschungsprojekten, so auch in dem Forschungsprojekt „Migrants4Cities“, das die TU Berlin gemeinsam mit der Stadt Mannheim und inter3 – Institut für Ressourcenmanagement durchführte. Dieser Leitfaden gibt anhand der Projekterfahrungen aus „Migrants4Cities“ einen praxisorientierten Überblick der Anwendungsweisen und -möglichkeiten von UDT. In ihm wird u.a. die Methode in den Kontext von Ko-Kreation in der Stadtentwicklung eingeordnet. Vorgestellt werden die nötigen Rahmenbedingungen für einen erfolgreichen UDT-Prozess sowie die möglichen Herausforderungen in dessen Durchführung. Einblicke in die UDT-Praxis liefern ein Überblick der im Projekt entwickelten Lösungsansätze sowie ein interaktiver UDT-Schnelldurchlauf, der zum selbst Ausprobieren einlädt. “Urban co-creation“ is en vogue. But how can it be achieved in planning practice? It requires methods that take the complexity of cities and their development into account and that, at the same time, have a low threshold for everyone to participate. The Urban Design Thinking (UDT) method is capable to include the needs of users in the development of their city within the framework of co-creative urban development and thus enables the generation of ideas for complex urban challenges. It was developed in 2015 by the Chair of Urban Renewal and Sustainable Development at the Technical University of Berlin, based on Stanford University’s Design Thinking method. UDT has already been applied in a variety of study and research projects, including the research project „Migrants4Cities“, which TU Berlin carried out together with the City of Mannheim and inter3 – Insitut für Ressourcenmanagement. This guide provides a practical overview of the application of UDT based on the project experiences of „Migrants4Cities“. It places the method in the context of co-creation in urban development. The necessary framework for a successful UDT process as well as the potential challenges are presented. Insights into UDT practice are provided by an overview of the ideas developed in the project „Migrants4Cities“ as well as an interactive UDT quick run-through, which, invites readers to try it out for themselves.

Distribute war ein Projekt von 2017 bis 2020 zur Erprobung von Nutzungsmöglichkeiten für Elektro-Lastenfahrräder in zwei Berliner Innenstadtquartieren, Klausenerplatz-Kiez und Mierendorff-Insel. Ziel des Projekts war es, Transporte mit Autos und Lieferwagen durch elektrisch betriebene Lastenfahrräder zu ersetzen und so den Verkehr in den Quartieren zu entlasten. Das Projekt wurde von zahlreichen Partnern aus Wissenschaft, Kommune und Wirtschaft durchgeführt und testete in einem Reallabor sowohl Lastenrad-Ausleihe als auch Lastenrad-Lieferungen auf der letzten Meile. Akteure aus den Quartieren sollten ihre Ideen und Erfahrungen von Anfang an einbringen und in Ko-Kreations-Formaten optimierte Nutzungsmöglichkeiten für Lastenräder entwickeln. Distribute was a project from 2017 to 2020 to test possible uses for electric cargo bikes in two inner-city districts of Berlin, Klausenerplatz-Kiez and Mierendorff-Insel. The aim of the project was to replace transports by car and delivery van with electrically operated cargo bicycles and thus relieve traffic in the neighborhoods. The project was carried out by numerous partners from science, community and business and tested both cargo bike rental and cargo bike deliveries on the last mile in a living laboratory. Actors from the neighborhoods should contribute their ideas and experiences right from the start and develop optimized usage options for cargo bikes in co-creation formats

Ann Bowman and Michael Pagano define "vacant land" broadly, to include everything from brownfields (environmentally contaminated land) through trashed lots and abandoned buildings to greenspace (parks, community gardens, etc.). Terra Incognita takes a fresh look at what they believe can be the ultimate urban resource. Beyond the common studies of the influence of market forces, it explores how these areas are affected by the decisions of local governments, and then shows how vacant land can be a valuable strategic asset for localities. Terra Incognita derives from what—until now—has been the lack of substantial information about the amount and the diversity of urban vacant land. This book is based on an unprecedented survey sent to all U.S. towns with a population greater than 50,000, and contains data previously unavailable. Three cities were studied in greater depth for detailed case studies: the greater Phoenix and Seattle areas and Philadelphia-Camden. A number of other cities are cited frequently, including Boston, Chicago, Detroit, New York, Cleveland, Cincinnati, and Oklahoma City, among many others. This volume presents for the first time a collection of historically important papers written on the concept of rationality in the social sciences. In 1939-40, the famed Austrian economist Joseph A. Schumpeter and the famous sociologist Talcott Parsons convened a faculty seminar at Harvard University on the topic of rationality. The first part includes their essays as well as papers by the Austrian phenomenologist Alfred Schütz, the sociologist Wilbert Moore, and the economist Rainer Schickele. Several younger economists and sociologists with bright futures also participated, including Alex Gerschenkron, John Dunlop, Paul M. Sweezy, and Wassily W. Leontief, who was later awarded the Nobel Prize for developing input-output analysis. The second part presents essays and commentaries written by today’s internationally noted social scientists and addressing the topic of rationality in social action from a broad range of perspectives. The book’s third and final part shares the recently discovered correspondence between the seminar principals regarding the original but failed plan to publish its proceedings. It also includes letters, not previously published, between Richard Grathoff, Walter M. Sprondel and Talcott Parsons on the rationality seminar and the exchanges between Parsons and Schütz.
