This document presents findings from the fourth and final phase of a longitudinal study of teacher education. The report is based on data collected in 1991 and 1992 from interviews with 100 beginning teachers trained at the Auckland, Wellington, and Christchurch Colleges of Education in New Zealand. The investigation focused on beginning teachers' experiences during their first year in the classroom; their perceptions of how they acquitted themselves as teachers, and their views on the effectiveness of teacher training. Following an introduction that deals with aims of the study, research objectives, and a summary of main findings based on data collected in 1991 and 1992, the report is organized into the following sections: methodology; graduates who did not get jobs; four-year students; beginning teachers; the first year of teaching; the value of the college program; the school and classroom experience; equity issues; the professional development of beginning teachers; and a discussion of issues that emerged. Approximately half the document consists of a series of beginning teacher profiles making extensive use of direct quotations. (LL)

A longitudinal study of teacher education in three New Zealand Colleges of Education (Auckland, Wellington, and Christchurch) was conducted between the years 1989-1992 to examine: (1) the process of teacher education as it unfolded over time for those involved in it; (2) the experiences of a cohort of students preparing to become primary school teachers; and (3) the professional socialization of teacher trainees. This final report of the project begins with an overview of the reactions of 100 beginning teachers to their experience in the classroom during their first year. It then shifts back in time to describe and discuss some of the findings related to the experiences of these beginning teachers and others in their cohort while they were students--their experiences of college courses which contributed to their current experiences as beginning teachers. The report brings together issues discussed with students and beginning teachers over the course of the four years, and sets the findings in a broader context. Informants' views raised questions about future policy, practice, and organization for teacher education in New Zealand. The document concludes with 4 student profiles. Contains approximately 150 references. (LL)

This report presents findings from the third phase of a longitudinal study of teacher education, based on a survey of 289 students in their third and final year of training at Auckland, Wellington, and Christchurch Colleges of Education in New Zealand and interviews with 74 of the students. The study investigated students' perceptions of their third year of training (specifically their courses), students' perceptions of the curriculum areas they were involved with in their first year of teaching, key beliefs about education and learning, changes in student views between the beginning of training and entering the classroom, student performance and contributing factors, relationship with parents of students, attitudes toward teaching Maori, assessment of student teachers, college workload, and students' intentions. A series of six student profiles is provided in order to give a more rounded view of individual students. Major findings include, among others: (1) at the end of their training, almost all the students were confident about teaching and running an integrated curriculum program in their own classroom; (2) students were least looking forward to teaching Maori and music and using computers in the classroom; and (3) students were most looking forward to teaching reading, physical education, and written language--curriculum areas where they had most experience during training. This is the first report of a longitudinal study of trainees preparing to teach in New Zealand primary and intermediate schools. The purpose of the study is to record attitudes and perceptions at the time of selection for teacher training at the end of l988 and the response of a smaller sample of students halfway through the first year of the course in 1989. The study is planned to run until 1992 when most of the students will have become beginning teachers. The study is being undertaken in three colleges: Auckland, Wellington, and Christchurch, and conducted in several phases. Data have been collected by means of a questionnaire to successful college applicants followed by more intensive investigation of a sample of the students through interviews and college records of performance. The report focuses on expectations, personal backgrounds, attitudes towards public service as future teachers, as well as thoughts on leading issues of the day such as gender and cultural equity. Future reports will document students' progress through teacher training and out into the classrooms with an eye towards helping inform individual colleges of ways education programs might be improved to enhance the student's experience. Completely updated, this popular guide provides teachers with a proven method for documenting (collecting, analyzing, and displaying) young children’s work. Written by teachers for teachers, it also shows principals, curriculum coordinators, and directors of early intervention programs how to develop children’s portfolios to share with parents or to use for assessment and other accountability purposes. “This lively, informative book poses a remarkable challenge to teachers—to grow themselves while growing young children. Being creatively accountable is hard work and the stories told here describe both the work, how it’s done, and its joyful rewards for teachers and children.” —Elizabeth Jones, Pacific Oaks College “This book provides a set of windows on children’s lives and how teachers can enter into those lives and enrich them through high-quality teaching. The authors have created an inspiring volume, a challenging set of ideas, and an invaluable resource for early childhood educators.” —Samuel J. Meisels, University of Michigan “[A] thoughtful, up-to-date guide to assessing and documenting children’s work. . . . The authors give clear, practical advice on how to collect, analyze, and display children’s work in meaningful ways.” —Scholastic Early Childhood Today (on first edition) “Many teachers find it frustrating to hear the rich and exciting learning experiences they provide described as ‘nothing.’ Windows on Learning skillfully addresses the challenge faced by early childhood educators wishing to share classroom experiences with parents, administrators, and peers. The authors offer a timely and fresh approach to documenting children’s learning and work.” —Childhood Education (on first edition)

Exploring Mathematics And Science Teachers Knowledge written by Hamsa Venkat and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014-05-09 with Education categories.

Globally, mathematics and science education faces three crucial challenges: an increasing need for mathematics and science graduates; a declining enrolment of school graduates into university studies in these disciplines; and the varying quality of school teaching in these areas. Alongside these challenges, internationally more and more non-specialists are teaching mathematics and science at both primary and secondary levels, and research evidence has revealed how gaps and limitations in teachers’ content understandings can lead to classroom practices that present barriers to students’ learning. This book addresses these issues by investigating how teachers’ content knowledge interacts with their pedagogies across diverse contexts and perspectives. This knowledge-practice nexus is examined across mathematics and science teaching, traversing schooling phases and countries, with an emphasis on contexts of disadvantage. These features push the boundaries of research into teachers’ content knowledge. The book’s combination of mathematics and science enriches each discipline for the reader, and contributes to our understandings of student attainment by examining the nature of specialised content knowledge needed for competent teaching within and across the two domains. Exploring Mathematics and Science Teachers’ Knowledge will be key reading for researchers, doctoral students and postgraduates with a focus on Mathematics, Science and teacher knowledge research.
