Product Description: Since the tragic events of 9/11 and the consequent advent of the Global War on Terrorism, there has been a remarkable surge of interest in counterinsurgency. This anthology presents 27 articles on counterinsurgency and irregular warfare, particularly highlighting and examining the U.S. Marine Corps' roles in conflicts from 1898 through 2007. It also includes an extensive bibliography of works on these conflicts. Continuing discussion and study of these subjects is of critical importance to the ongoing efforts of the United States and its allies in the Global War on Terrorism. The anthology is divided broadly into two halves: the first half presents historical examples of counterinsurgency involving the United States-from the Philippines and the "Banana Wars" up through Vietnam-while the second half addresses the nation's contemporary efforts in this regard. Articles cover the situations in Iraq, Afghanistan, and the Horn of Africa. The selected bibliography addresses a broad range of subjects: on higher-end operational/strategic level of war considerations, on geopolitical context, and on a varied array of related topics-political theory, historical case studies, failed states, cultural studies and analysis, and many others-that all provide context or play a role in conducting a counterinsurgency and achieving success in the realm of irregular warfare. Colonel Stephen S. Evans, USMCR, researched and compiled this work as a field historian with the Marine Corps History Division. He has experience at various operational levels, both joint and multinational, in CONUS and overseas, and has performed duty with all three MEFs, MARFORLANT, MARFOREUR, and U.S. forces in Korea. He has also held a range of positions in administrative and educational roles at Quantico and the Pentagon. Colonel Evans holds a doctorate in history from Temple University and has published two historical monographs.

The following story is about an extraordinary Marine, Thomas Grant Bruce, Master Sgt., Lt. in the Guardia Nacional of Nicaragua. Bruce was highly decorated, highly motivated and committed to the Corps, his men and especially his wife. He had earned the French Croix de Geure and Silver Star for his actions in World War I. He had been one of the Mail Guards after the war, participated in the Sesquicentennial celebration of the signing of the Declaration of Independence in Philadelphia, and served as a recruiter. He had been in Nicaragua for a couple of years of 1922-1924, then returned in 1927 which is the period these letters cover.The documents and letters used in this book came to light in an unusual way. I was giving history talks to visitors at the Tampa Bay History Center on the Fourth of July, and got into a conversation with a gentleman about the local history. He explained that he had an extensive collection of artifacts collected over the years and extended an invitation to see them. While there he brought out an old file box that he indicated that he had purchased it at a yard sale a few years prior. In it were the personal copies of enlistments, letters of commendations and a large group of letters written by M.Sgt. Bruce to his wife in 1927 from Nicaragua. He was certain after reading my previous book, that I could tell a story with the contents of the box.The letters that Bruce wrote to his wife were very articulate, detailed and informative to his everyday life, duties, and actions that he had been in. It became clear that here was an exceptional Marine. His enthusiasm and dedication to his mission and his men was very apparent. It came across that he took his mission to thwart the actions of rebel leader Sandino as a very personal mission. Unlike the relative uniformity of conventional warfare, the peculiarities of small wars prevent a clear definition of rules and roles for military forces to follow. During the small wars era, aviation was still in its infancy, and the US military had only recently begun battling in the skies. The US Marine Corps recognized that flexibility and ingenuity would be critical to the successful conduct of small wars and thus employed the new technology of aviation. In Biplanes at War: US Marine Corps Aviation in the Small Wars Era, 1915–1934, author Wray R. Johnson provides a riveting history of the marines' use of aviation between the world wars, a time in which young soldiers were volunteering to fly in combat when flying itself was a dangerous feat. Starting with Haiti in 1915, Biplanes at War follows the marines' aviation experiences in Haiti, the Dominican Republic, China, and Nicaragua, chronicling how marines used aircraft to provide supporting fires (e.g., dive-bombing) to ground troops in close contact with irregular opponents, evacuate the sick and wounded, transport people and cargo (e.g., to assist humanitarian operations), and even support elections in furtherance of democracy. After years of expanding the capabilities of airplanes far beyond what was deemed possible, the small wars era ended, and the US Marines Corps transitioned into an amphibious assault force.
