Excerpt from The Place of Women in the Church Our feeling is that priesthood is a human Office, not at all a sexual one, and that Since women are human beings it is unreasonable to refuse them an Opportunity Of holding it merely, because they are women. I know at least one woman who feels that she has the vocation and this woman would have made, so far as one can see, an almost ideal priest. The weight Of custom seems to us to be quenching the Spirit Of God. The loss to the Church appears to us lamentable. A summary of about ninety answers refived was drawn up at considerable length. THE wives of the Reformers are an interesting study. They receive greatness from their husbands, and impart gentleness and beauty in return. What would Luther have been without his Kathe? Excerpt from Woman, Church and State: A Historical Account of the Status of Woman Through the Christian Ages; With Reminiscences of the Matriarchate This work explains itself and is given to the world because it is needed. Tired Of the obtuseness of Church and State; indignant at the injustice of both towards woman; at the wrongs inflicted upon one-half of humanity by the other half in the name Of religion; finding appeal and argument alike met by the asser tion that God designed the subjection of woman, and yet that her position had been higher under Christian ity than ever before: Continually hearing these state ments, and knowing them to be false, I refuted them in a slight rein/m! Of the subject at the annual conven tion of the National Woman Suffrage Association, Washington, D. C., 1878. Excerpt from A Manual of the Missions of the Reformed (Dutch) Church in America: Issued by the Woman's Board of Foreign Missions Our Dutch ancestors planted the Reformed Church in this country, at a time when all Europe was convulsed with religious wars. Directly after its independent organization here, it took measures for rearing and training a missionary ministry. The condition first of the colonies, and afterwards of the States, required' such a ministry. Toward the close of the last century, the New York Missionary Society was formed; and our Pastors, with the eloquent and illustrious Dr. John Livingston at their head, joined heartily in its efforts to Christianize Outlying regions. How far that pioneer, associated missionary body, contributed to awaken missionary zeal and enterprise in the American Church, it would be difficult to determine. It is very certain, however, that it originated in uences which, early in the present century, resulted in the formation of the American Board. The General Synod of the Reformed Church, at the opening of the missionary era, appointed its own committee on Foreign Missions; but soon made arrangements to carry on its work with all the Evangelical Churches, then constituting the American Board. There were at that time, wise and thoughtful men who doubted the expediency of turning over our work, as a Church, into the hands of any merely voluntary agency. Still, there was no factious opposition. At length, experience in Borneo, Arcot, and Amoy, demonstrated the duty of conducting our Foreign Missions in our own way. Excerpt from Women in the Apostolic Church: A Critical Study of the Evidence in the New Testament for the Prominence of Women in Early Christianity The prominent part played by women in the primitive Christian communities has not been overlooked by commentators on the New Testament or by writers of works on the apostolic age. But the subject cannot be said to have received the attention which its interest and importance demand. There would seem to be no book, at least in English, in which a connected and critical account of the evidence may be found. Imperfect as I feel my work to be, the present essay is an attempt to supply this need. Among the authorities cited in the footnotes, I must specially acknowledge my obligations to the following well-known works: Dr. Plummer's edition of St. Luke's Gospel in the International Critical Commentary, and in the same Commentary, the First Epistle to the Corinthians by Bishop Robertson and Dr. Plummer; the commentaries on the Acts of the Apostles by Dr. Knowling, in the Expositor's Greek Testament, and by Mr. Rackham, in the Westminster Commentaries; Sir William Ramsay's The Church in the Roman Empire before A.D. 170 and St. Paul the Traveller and Roman Citizen; the Dictionary of the Bible and the Dictionary of the Apostolic Church (Vol I.), edited by Dr. Hastings. Excerpt from Woman's Work in the Church: Historical Notes on Deaconesses and Sisterhoods Shortly, however, before the time fixed for de livering the lectures above mentioned, my friend wrote to me to say that, through the influence of a clergyman, who afterwards became a dignitary of the Church, the subject had been tabooed by the Committee. An attempt to secure a hearing for me in the lecture hall of another Mechanics' Insti tute was equally defeated by clerical influence.
