Excerpt from Business Arithmetic Secondary Schools The use and applications of number vary with the changes and development of our industrial, commercial and social relations. The arithmetic of to-day is not the arithmetic of ten years ago. The fundamental principles and processes do not alter, but new applications constantly develop and older applications lessen in usefulness. In this sense, arithmetic is a living subject which deals with living phenomena. In these days arithmetic is commonly used not only for the necessary routine computations incident to our private, business, or scientific affairs, but its processes are called upon to study facts through number and to interpret these facts - to put number into things rather than to take number from them. Moreover, the modern use of number often takes the form of a language, as in the construction or reading of numerical illustrations, and statements or statistics which are designed to impress upon others certain facts or conditions. Thus modern arithmetic may be said to have a use as a tool, i. e., for routine computation, an interpretive use, and a language use. But accuracy and facility in the use of most working instruments presuppose a knowledge of the fundamental parts of the instrument, of the interrelation of these parts, of their working principles, and of the classes of material or work to which they may be applied. Thus, facility in the three "uses" of the arithmetic instrument is founded, primarily, on a logical working knowledge of the fundamental operations and principles. This is the more necessary because the arithmetic problems of actual life do not have a text-book form of statement. If formulated at all, they may offer no direct clue to a particular subdivision of the subject. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. How Math Works written by G. Arnell Williams and has been published by Rowman & Littlefield Publishers this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-04-04 with Education categories.

We hear all the time how American children are falling behind their global peers in various basic subjects, but particularly in math. Is it our fear of math that constrains us? Or our inability to understand math’s place in relation to our everyday lives? How can we help our children better understand the basics of arithmetic if we’re not really sure we understand them ourselves? Here, G. Arnell Williams helps parents and teachers explore the world of math that their elementary school children are learning. Taking readers on a tour of the history of arithmetic, and its growth into the subject we know it to be today, Williams explores the beauty and relevance of mathematics by focusing on the great conceptual depth and genius already inherent in the elementary mathematics familiar to us all, and by connecting it to other well-known areas such as language and the conceptual aspects of everyday life. The result is a book that will help you to better explain mathematics to your children. For those already well versed in these areas, the book offers a tour of the great conceptual and historical facts and assumptions that most simply take for granted. If you are someone who has always struggled with mathematics either because you couldn’t do it or because you never really understood why the rules are the way they are, if you were irritated with the way it was taught to you with the emphasis being only on learning the rules and “recipes” by rote as opposed to obtaining a good conceptual understanding, then How Math Works is for you!

Arithmetic is still hugely important in many aspects of modern life, but our personal attitudes to it differ greatly. Many people struggle with the basic principles of arithmetic, whilst others love it and feel confident in their arithmetical abilities. Why are there so many individual differences in people’s performance in, and feelings about, arithmetic? Individual Differences in Arithmetic explores the idea that there is no such thing as arithmetical ability, only arithmetical abilities. The book discusses several important components of arithmetic, from counting principles and procedures to arithmetical estimation, alongside emotional and cognitive components of arithmetical performance. This edition has been extensively revised to include the latest research, including recent cross-cultural and cross-linguistic research, the development of new interventions for children with difficulties and studies of early foundations of mathematical abilities. Drawing on developmental, educational, cognitive and neuropsychological studies, this book will be essential reading for all researchers of mathematical cognition. It will also be of interest to educators and other professionals working within individuals with arithmetic deficits.
