This volume argues that refusal is a viable political ethics in education. It is an ethics that allows space for new possibilities to emerge, with the potential to enrich higher education study and pedagogies in the future. Chapters examine the ethical, epistemological, political and affective premises of refusing the colonial university, and reflect upon what refusal means for higher education decolonization across international settings. Refusal marks a political ethos and praxis that denies, resists, reframes and redirects colonial and neoliberal logics, while asserting diverse sovereignties and lifeworlds. Whereas resistance may reinscribe the weakness of the colonized in the power relations with the colonizer, refusal interrupts the smooth operation of power relations, denying the authority of the settler state and remaking the rules of engagement. It is a political stance and action that denies the very legitimacy of power over the subjugated. This collection views refusal not as an end in itself, nor as a mode of critique, but as a necessary first step for educators and students in higher education to invest in the idea of radically different modes of futurity. It explores how educators and students in higher education can invent pedagogies of refusal that function ethically, affectively and politically, and asks: What do pedagogies of refusal look like? How might western universities sustain and support refusal, rather than discipline it? What assumptions are sustained by ruling out certain educational futures as out of bounds, or impossible? This book will be important reading for researchers, scholars and educators in Decolonizing Education, Higher Education Transformation, and Philosophy of Education. It will also be valuable to policymakers and activists who are considering how refusal might be carried out within and outside institutions.

Indigenous and decolonizing perspectives on education have long persisted alongside colonial models of education, yet too often have been subsumed within the fields of multiculturalism, critical race theory, and progressive education. Timely and compelling, Indigenous and Decolonizing Studies in Education features research, theory, and dynamic foundational readings for educators and educational researchers who are looking for possibilities beyond the limits of liberal democratic schooling. Featuring original chapters by authors at the forefront of theorizing, practice, research, and activism, this volume helps define and imagine the exciting interstices between Indigenous and decolonizing studies and education. Each chapter forwards Indigenous principles - such as Land as literacy and water as life - that are grounded in place-specific efforts of creating Indigenous universities and schools, community organizing and social movements, trans and Two Spirit practices, refusals of state policies, and land-based and water-based pedagogies.

It provides both theoretical insights and methodological approaches to pedagogical love. The book opens with foundational chapters introducing the concept and progresses to situating it within frameworks such as decolonisation and critical pedagogy. It further examines its potential in teacher education, addressing specific pedagogical domains such as second language acquisition and literacy, as well as cultural contexts spanning Asia, Europe, Africa, and the Americas. Moreover, the book investigates the implications of pedagogical love in current transformations and digitalisation, with particular attention to fully digital environments and artificial intelligence. By offering a comprehensive overview and presenting innovative perspectives for research in adult education, this book serves as an essential resource for researchers, educators, and practitioners. "This edited collection delves into the transformative power of pedagogical love in adult education, challenging conventional views of love as merely ‘soft’ and personal. By exploring critical and decolonial perspectives, the book opens new avenues for research and practice, advocating for love as a profound ethical and political force to confront social injustices and transform educational spaces…Bridging critical and decolonial approaches, this volume reimagines pedagogical love as a key to transformation in adult education. It moves beyond sentimental notions to show how love can address challenges like violence, colonialism, and social inequity, offering a renewed perspective on love’s role in shaping the future of education" Michalinos Zembylas, Open University of Cyprus "Pedagogical love is the root and foundation of all adult education" Kaarina Määttä, Professor (emerita), University of Lapland

The study of higher education presupposes the ‘goodness’ of the university and the academy, and the scholars who study them. Yet the social justice intent of both have long been questioned and may be emptied out. This book explores generative developments of ‘other’ ways to study, more critically and productively, the university across disciplines. While framed affirmatively, this endeavour is a space of refusal. Refusal of the status quo, of the taken-for-granted and of hegemonic powers and violences that continue within and outside higher education institutions. Part I explores possible emancipatory frames to (in)form transformative change and its enquiry. Its four chapters deliberate how Critical University Studies may be advanced in relation to its own histories of intellectual emergence, decolonial theory, Abolitionist Studies, sustainable development, and the African university. Part II asks questions about the conditions of possibility for advancing Critical University Studies. Particular disciplines, fields of study, cases, contexts and methods of analysis are discussed within the contexts of Canada, Germany, India, South Africa and the United Kingdom. Exploring the effects on different academic citizens and figures, the six chapters in this section combine to assert the pervasiveness of the problematics of the politics of participation for marginalised and minoritised academic citizens’ agency and authority; and to uphold the value of resistance in the formation and authorisation of persons and knowledges. Part III (re)turns to the necessity for reflexivity. The two chapters engage with its importance for scholarship and praxes for critical work to be disruptive. Recognising the potential of critique to (re)produce harmful patterns requires such logics and desires be identified and interrupted. Emancipatory Imaginations: Advancing Critical University Studies mobilises engagement with the question of how the critical study of the university is to be advanced in scholarship, framing, practice and praxes - within, beyond and against traditions of the past and present. It is thus of interest to academics, students and intellectuals who are concerned with transformative change within universities.

Postfoundational Approaches to Qualitative Inquiry is an edited collection that aims to move beyond a critique and deconstruction of method in order to present an engagement with various postfoundational frameworks and approaches that produce new concepts and enactments. What makes this book innovative is the singular focus on postfoundational paradigms, borrowed from the humanities and sciences, that are enveloped in what is referred to as the ontological turn, the new empiricisms, and the new materialisms. Postfoundational inquiry is conceived by the editors as emergent, relational, responsive, involuntary, and inventive. While the editors name the facets of these contingent approaches and explain how they work, they do so not in order to fix a new method, but to spur new connectives. In this collection, authors take up a range of postfoundational theories such as poststructuralism, posthumanism, postcolonialism, feminist new materialism, speculative/ new empiricism, agential realism, immanent ontologies, and affect theory. Provoked by a series of reorienting questions, chapters in the book offer enactments as a way of unfurling what is unthought, not yet, and becoming. The chapters are organized according to four Openings: Atmospheres, Affects, and Hauntings; Archives, Worldings, and Sketchings; Escaping Tradition, Beginning Elsewhere, and the Politics of Doing Otherwise; Pre-personal Agencies and Thought Taking Flight. This book can be used as a standalone text in advanced qualitative inquiry courses, or as a supplementary text in courses that examine the use of theory in research.

Educational Research And The Question S Of Time written by David R. Cole and has been published by Springer Nature this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2024-06-24 with Education categories.
This book fully explores the question(s) of time in educational research and achieves the acceleration and merging of inquiry with action to understand change and implement these findings through practice. It deals with the philosophy of education, higher education, schooling (the curriculum), time displacement, technology, the environment and policy. This book focuses on time revolution(s). It explores new ways of thinking about time, that question a linear/arrow in time, and sets into motion an educational research agenda to extract revolutions of time. Furthermore, this book figures the dimension of time in teaching and learning by extending and deepening the engagement with time in education. For example, it analyzes the climate crisis in terms of education and how the realization that the climate is changing sits parallel and adjacent to pedagogy. The climate crisis and how to do anything about it through education is an example of how considering the dimension of time opens up education beyond quick or narrow fixes and introduces a profound synthesis for the future.

Food Stories: Navigating the Academy with Cultural Lessons from the Kitchen is the first volume in the series Culinary Canvas: A Series on Integrating the Arts and Food into Higher Education. The purpose of the series is to explore the innovative integration of arts and food into higher education. Each volume aims to inspire a paradigm shift in academia, advocating for a more holistic, creative, and inclusive approach to learning, teaching, researching, serving, and existing in the academy. In the present volume, Food Stories makes the case that food, and the culture surrounding food, is a closely held--and powerful--reality that shapes who we are as individuals, as members of varied communities, and invariably, informs who we are as educators and researchers. This book gives space for the authors to explore not only the impact that food and culture have had, and continue to have, on them as individuals, how that culture and experiences impact them as members of the academy (in teaching, research, and service), but also in providing some guidance to graduate students and junior faculty. In effect, chapters explore navigating academic work (teaching, research, and service) through the lens of food and the transferable lessons that can be gleaned from our grandmothers’, mothers’, fathers’, and our own kitchens. It is often the case that higher education fosters both imposter syndrome and a workaholic disposition that can be detrimental to teaching and research. What this book does, then, is to not only explore the ways in which what may seem as non-academic work such as cooking a meal can have on our work/life balance but, also, how to incorporate the very lessons of food into who we are as educators, how we teach, and how we can approach the work we do more broadly. Through carefully curated chapters, this text presents a wide array of perspectives across food and cultural regions, as well as imparting insights from the academy from authors spanning the spectrum of the career. It is an important book full of valuable lessons for graduate students, faculty and teachers who wish to use its content in their classrooms. Perfect for courses such as: Cultural Studies; Culturally-Responsive Pedagogy

This cutting-edge Handbook goes beyond discourses of equity, inclusion, and diversity, carving a space for critical discussions about the relationships between Black, Indigenous, People of Color (BIPOC) and the university. In doing so, it forges new paths and alternative conceptual starting points to consider in making a commitment to social justice in higher education.
