The workshop has been a staple of creative writing for decades. However, it is only in recent years that the purpose and design of the creative writing workshop has become a source of conversation and investigation. During the course of this conversation, however, very little attention has been paid to the central component of the workshop: peer feedback. The goal of this study was to conduct an exploratory investigation into the practices of both published and unpublished writers: whether they value feedback and what kinds of feedback they value. This was accomplished through a series of interviews, where writers were asked to discuss their experiences with the readers they had received feedback from (whether in workshops or writing groups, or from friends, editors, agents, or others) and to illustrate their ideas through specific examples of both useful and useless feedback they had received, accompanied with explanations of why this feedback was deemed such.
