Abstract: Prevention, intervention, and "postvention" of youth suicide is the subject of this comprehensive manual. This publication outlines the creation of a community/school prevention network of caring and concern intended to prevent and intervene in youth suicide and to console and support after a youth suicide in order to prevent further suicides. The manual details the roles played by several key components of the community in establishing this program including: community leaders; law enforcement personnel; hospitals; mental health clinicians; clergy; school administrators, faculty and staff; parents; youth-serving agencies and organizations; media; and the youth themselves.

Reducing Suicide written by Institute of Medicine and has been published by National Academies Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2002-10-01 with Medical categories.

Every year, about 30,000 people die by suicide in the U.S., and some 650,000 receive emergency treatment after a suicide attempt. Often, those most at risk are the least able to access professional help. Reducing Suicide provides a blueprint for addressing this tragic and costly problem: how we can build an appropriate infrastructure, conduct needed research, and improve our ability to recognize suicide risk and effectively intervene. Rich in data, the book also strikes an intensely personal chord, featuring compelling quotes about people's experience with suicide. The book explores the factors that raise a person's risk of suicide: psychological and biological factors including substance abuse, the link between childhood trauma and later suicide, and the impact of family life, economic status, religion, and other social and cultural conditions. The authors review the effectiveness of existing interventions, including mental health practitioners' ability to assess suicide risk among patients. They present lessons learned from the Air Force suicide prevention program and other prevention initiatives. And they identify barriers to effective research and treatment. This new volume will be of special interest to policy makers, administrators, researchers, practitioners, and journalists working in the field of mental health.

You just won a round-trip ticket to Spain but before you board the plane, you're informed there's only a 56% chance the pilots have any flight training or maybe received a few hours of flight instruction. What would you do? This is about the equivalent level of training mental health practitioners and school personnel have in the evaluation, assessment, and safety planning of youth suicidal thoughts and behaviors. With good intentions, mental health practitioners and school personnel are making significant clinical decisions in suicide assessment that influence a range of outcomes, from very negative (e.g., completed suicide) to very positive (e.g., on the path to recovery). The Risk Identification Suicide Kit2 - Manual is designed to alleviate some initial anxiety while supporting you to confidently provide an easy-flowing structured evaluation of current suicidal thoughts and behaviors in youth ages 5-24. The RISK2 is an empirically based multileveled approach to assessment by providing a guided verbal response self-reported interview, an ambivalence status assessment of Protective Factors and Reasons to Die/Live, a 12-item suicide specific questionnaire, a mental status exam, and a supportive RISK2 Safety Plan. The categorical risk-levels are based on a numeric score classification and include Imminent Risk, Moderate/High Risk, and Low Risk. With each risk level, suggested corresponding staff action steps are provided to guide the intervention in consideration of existing liability (Tort-Law) and documentation. Since 2009 and 2023 (2nd Edition), the RISK2 Manual walks you through the evaluation process while providing additional techniques and troubleshooting ideas. After receiving rigorous psychometric analysis, the RISK2 is one of just a few validated instruments to achieve strong internal consistency, validity, reliability, and predictability in the youngest children. The content of the RISK2 and RISK2 Manual are based on the research findings of over 5,949 ten-item pre/post Suicide Prevention Knowledge Surveys, 4,057 school mental health referrals, and the dissection of over 1,404 suicide assessments. It is my hope to empower and guide staff in the assessment process while leading the youth and family towards a path of recovery and a desire to choose living.
