In the Royal Library of Brussels, nos 2324 - 2840 fo]. 241b - 248a (text A), and no8 4190 - 4200 fo]. 277a - 279b (text B). In A the miracles follow a copy of the Life of Senan similar to that printed by Stokes in 'lives of Saints from the Book of In B they follow a copy of the 'amra Senain which was printed by Stokes in this 'zeitschrift' III 220ff., from H. III 17. Of the B text a late 18th century copy exists in ria 23l11 p. 241 (hodges and Smith n but it is a wretched scrawl, and I have not collated it. Of the two texts A is, as a rule, the fuller and clearer, but there are very interesting points in B2). A is the text here printed, but all variations of importance in B are given in the textual notes, and these are either incorporated [within square brackets] in the translation, or given in the notes to it. An examination of the ways in which works of Classical literature influenced and were received by the native Irish tradition. Original, innovative work which elucidates a number of individual narratives; but more significantly, by placing these texts in their proper intellectual context, the author demonstrates how the world of learning in eleventh- andtwelfth-century Ireland really worked. He illuminates a world of medieval education and scholarship; he tells us (as no-one has done previously) what medieval Irish classicism was all about. The puzzle of Ireland's role in the preservation of classical learning into the middle ages has always excited scholars, but the evidence from the island's vernacular literature - as opposed to that in Latin - for the study of pagan epic has largely escaped notice. In this book the author breaks new ground by examining the Irish texts alongside the Latin evidence for the study of classical epic in medieval Ireland, surveying the corpus of Irish texts based on histories and poetry from antiquity, in particular Togail Troi, the Irish history of the Fall of Troy. He argues that Irish scholars' study of Virgil and Statius in particularleft a profound imprint on the native heroic literature, especially the Irish prose epic Táin Bó Cúailnge ("The Cattle-Raid of Cooley"). In der bisherigen Forschung ist wiederholt die Frage aufgeworfen worden, ob die Paradiesgefilde des Ódáinsakr und der Glæsisvellir der mittelalterlichen isländischen Mythologie auf keltische Einflüsse zurückgehen, und wie genau diese Einflüsse zu fassen und sozial und historisch einzuordnen sind. Um diese Fragen zu beantworten, arbeitet das Buch die nordischen Zeugnisse vollständig auf; neben literarischen werden dabei auch folkloristische Quellen und archäologische Befunde berücksichtigt. Nach der Analyse dieses Materials wendet sich die Studie dem keltischen Vergleichsmaterial zu: der arthurischen Literatur, der irischen Literatur und antiken keltischen Zeugnissen. Die vergleichende Analyse dieses breit gestreuten Materials zeigt, dass der Ódáinsakr/Glæsisvellir-Komplex in der Tat von keltischen Überlieferungen nicht zu trennen ist. Die unmittelbare Quelle für die zugrundeliegenden Einflüsse ist dabei wohl nicht in der arthurischen Literatur oder gar der keltischen Antike, sondern in der volkssprachlichen Überlieferung des wikingerzeitlichen Irland zu suchen. Von dort scheint der Motivkomplex während der Landnahmezeit nach Island gelangt zu sein.
