This book contains accounts of work presented during the research conference, ``Zeta Functions in Geometry,'' held at the Tokyo Institute of Technology in August 1990. The aim of the conference was to provide an opportunity for the discussion of recent results by geometers and number theorists on zeta functions in several different categories. The exchange of ideas produced new insights on various geometric zeta functions, as well as the classical zeta functions. The zeta functions covered here are the Selberg zeta functions, the Ihara zeta functions, spectral zeta functions, and those associated with prehomogeneous vector spaces. Accessible to graduate students with background in geometry and number theory, Zeta Functions in Geometry will prove useful for its presentation of new results and up-to-date surveys.

Graph theory meets number theory in this stimulating book. Ihara zeta functions of finite graphs are reciprocals of polynomials, sometimes in several variables. Analogies abound with number-theoretic functions such as Riemann/Dedekind zeta functions. For example, there is a Riemann hypothesis (which may be false) and prime number theorem for graphs. Explicit constructions of graph coverings use Galois theory to generalize Cayley and Schreier graphs. Then non-isomorphic simple graphs with the same zeta are produced, showing you cannot hear the shape of a graph. The spectra of matrices such as the adjacency and edge adjacency matrices of a graph are essential to the plot of this book, which makes connections with quantum chaos and random matrix theory, plus expander/Ramanujan graphs of interest in computer science. Created for beginning graduate students, the book will also appeal to researchers. Many well-chosen illustrations and exercises, both theoretical and computer-based, are included throughout.

The original zeta function was studied by Riemann as part of his investigation of the distribution of prime numbers. Other sorts of zeta functions were defined for number-theoretic purposes, such as the study of primes in arithmetic progressions. This led to the development of $L$-functions, which now have several guises. It eventually became clear that the basic construction used for number-theoretic zeta functions can also be used in other settings, such as dynamics, geometry, and spectral theory, with remarkable results. This volume grew out of the special session on dynamical, spectral, and arithmetic zeta functions held at the annual meeting of the American Mathematical Society in San Antonio, but also includes four articles that were invited to be part of the collection. The purpose of the meeting was to bring together leading researchers, to find links and analogies between their fields, and to explore new methods. The papers discuss dynamical systems, spectral geometry on hyperbolic manifolds, trace formulas in geometry and in arithmetic, as well as computational work on the Riemann zeta function. Each article employs techniques of zeta functions. The book unifies the application of these techniques in spectral geometry, fractal geometry, and number theory. It is a comprehensive volume, offering up-to-date research. It should be useful to both graduate students and confirmed researchers.

Number theory, spectral geometry, and fractal geometry are interlinked in this in-depth study of the vibrations of fractal strings, that is, one-dimensional drums with fractal boundary. Key Features of this Second Edition: The Riemann hypothesis is given a natural geometric reformulation in the context of vibrating fractal strings Complex dimensions of a fractal string, defined as the poles of an associated zeta function, are studied in detail, then used to understand the oscillations intrinsic to the corresponding fractal geometries and frequency spectra Explicit formulas are extended to apply to the geometric, spectral, and dynamical zeta functions associated with a fractal Examples of such explicit formulas include a Prime Orbit Theorem with error term for self-similar flows, and a geometric tube formula The method of Diophantine approximation is used to study self-similar strings and flows Analytical and geometric methodsare used to obtain new results about the vertical distribution of zeros of number-theoretic and other zeta functions Throughout, new results are examined and a new definition of fractality as the presence of nonreal complex dimensions with positive real parts is presented. The new final chapter discusses several new topics and results obtained since the publication of the first edition. The significant studies and problems illuminated in this work may be used in a classroom setting at the graduate level. Fractal Geometry, Complex Dimensions and Zeta Functions, Second Edition will appeal to students and researchers in number theory, fractal geometry, dynamical systems, spectral geometry, and mathematical physics.

Arithmetic algebraic geometry is in a fascinating stage of growth, providing a rich variety of applications of new tools to both old and new problems. Representative of these recent developments is the notion of Arakelov geometry, a way of "completing" a variety over the ring of integers of a number field by adding fibres over the Archimedean places. Another is the appearance of the relations between arithmetic geometry and Nevanlinna theory, or more precisely between diophantine approximation theory and the value distribution theory of holomorphic maps. Inspired by these exciting developments, the editors organized a meeting at Texel in 1989 and invited a number of mathematicians to write papers for this volume. Some of these papers were presented at the meeting; others arose from the discussions that took place. They were all chosen for their quality and relevance to the application of algebraic geometry to arithmetic problems. Topics include: arithmetic surfaces, Chjerm functors, modular curves and modular varieties, elliptic curves, Kolyvagin’s work, K-theory and Galois representations. Besides the research papers, there is a letter of Parshin and a paper of Zagier with is interpretations of the Birch-Swinnerton-Dyer Conjecture. Research mathematicians and graduate students in algebraic geometry and number theory will find a valuable and lively view of the field in this state-of-the-art selection.
