"Born to an orphan train child, Anna escaped her troubled roots as a Chicago nurse, but big-city glamour was not for her. After a blind, seven-year correspondence, she married a South African rancher, moved to the banks of the Orange River, then homesteaded in Southern Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe). Anna and her husband made the bricks for their home, battled the leopards and baboons that threatened their crops, · and negotiated the terms of daily existence with Natives. Tragedy led them to Mt. Selinda Mission where they labored to improve medicine and agriculture for all Rhodesians. Through Anna's letters, we share the tragedy and inspiration of her African journey"--Page 4 of cover

1978: In Rhodesia, the Internal Settlement led to the creation of a coalition government. Smith had, however, neither capitulated nor abandoned his belief in white superiority, and thousands of people fled across the country's borders. In England, a group of missionaries, supported by the Catholic Institute for International Relations, formed a steering group that was to become the Zimbabwe Project. Originally an educational fund to support exiled young Zimbabweans, it shifted focus toward humanitarian assistance to refugees in the region. 1981: The Zimbabwe Project Trust, a child of the war, came home, and its director, Judith Todd, started mapping the route that it would follow for the next thirty years. ZimPro - as it came to be known - began its work with ex-combatants, assisting with their education, skills training and co-operative development, and producing a news bulletin. In terms of funding, courage, and creative programming, it became a giant in the country's development landscape, but it has had to negotiate many political, financial and philosophical minefields on the way. Against The Odds offers a rare insight into workings of an NGO on the frontline. With a cast of larger-than-life characters, it also offers a drama of Zimbabwe's first thirty years and provides insights and lessons which will benefit everyone concerned with development, and provide historians with another important lens through which to view the past.

"The whole town not only knew what happened here, but had probably seen and heard parts of that day of hell. Some must have been witnesses and others accomplices to murder, torture and brutality. The wind, once my friend and comforter, had become my tormenter and persecutor. Coursing over the granite kopjes, the wind was filled with voices and secrets. The whole town was hiding a secret." 'Beyond Tears' is the story of events that ripped Zimbabwe apart between 2000 and 2002. Eye-witness accounts of anarchy, harassment, intimidation and the foulest abuses of citizens by their own government. "Catherine Buckle provides vivid testimony of the power and destruction inflicted on the country and its people." Martin Meredith author of 'Robert Mugabe: Power Plunder and Tyranny in Zimbabwe.'

Zimbabwean human rights historiography often assumes that pre- colonial African politics were democratic; whilst colonialism implies a total denial of human rights. It further assumes that Zimbabwean nationalism was in essence a human rights movement; and that the liberation struggle, which led to the overthrow of colonial oppression, reinstated both human rights and democracy. This, the second volume on the historical dimensions of human rights in Africa, reconsiders questions of nationalism, democracy and human rights. It asks why the first 'democratic revolution' was frustrated in Africa, despite the democratic dimensions of the early nationalist movements. It considers possible causes of the resulting post-independence authoritarianism in Zimbabwe as centralism, top-down modernisation, or 'development'; and it reviews the outcomes of a commandist state. Common themes running through the book are the ambiguities and antitheses which concepts of nationalism and democracy imply; and the delicate, but necessary balancing which discourse on majoritarian democracy and human rights is bound to produce. This in-depth historical analysis by some of Zimbabwe's leading intellectuals and academics sheds essential light on some of the conflicts, traumas and human rights dilemmas that the country is experiencing at present.

Morgan Tsvangiraiís appointment as Zimbabweís Prime Minister in 2009 followed many yearsí leadership of the Zimbabwe Congress of Trades Unions and the Movement for Democratic Change. How has that experience equipped him for high national office? Does he have the personal, intellectual and political qualities required to be President? In July 2004, as he was awaiting the verdict in his treason trial, Tsvangirai spent several days in conversation with Stephen Chan. Chan was concerned to find out if Tsvangirai was more than ëmerely a charismatic leader of the oppositioní; if he had ëhis own intellectual agenda [and] political philosophyí. His questions were even-handed and astute. ëDiscussion by discussion, Morgan Tsvangirai had become more open, more human ñ less cautious and, paradoxically, more obviously and naturally presidential.í Five years later, having reviewed the events since their discussions took place, Chan writes: ëI have not made a saint of him, not even an Atlas. I hope I have not criticized him too much or too unfairly. Probably no one could have done for Zimbabwe what he has.í Citizen of Zimbabwe is a rare and intimate portrait of political leadership in Africa.
