Il testo mette a fuoco una leggenda, quella del Serpentegatto, unica nel panorama favolistico alpino. Marcoenrico Manoni ha ritenuto utile approfondire e portare all’attenzione del grande pubblico questa singolare e sconosciuta tradizione – non esistono altri testi pubblicati sull’argomento – convinto che possa non solo contribuire alla identità di certi territori alpini dove la leggenda si è diffusa, ma anche ad allargare ulteriormente l’orizzonte della nostra immaginazione. La tesi che sta alla base del libro pone, infatti, l’accento sulle peculiarità di questo immaginario e inafferrabile essere e sulle differenze storiche, geografiche e culturali che lo caratterizzano rispetto ad altri esseri leggendari. Molti affermano, scrive l’autore, che l’esistenza del Serpentegatto sia riconducibile solo a una ingenua fantasia in quanto il protagonista di questa storia non è mai stato né fotografato, né catturato e quindi mai confermato dalla scienza ufficiale. È probabile che questa moltitudine di critici possa aver ragione. Al contrario, invece, si potrebbe pensare ingenuamente a un passato non molto lontano quando questo inafferrabile essere sopravviveva al suo naturale destino in un mondo ormai non più suo. Forse il Serpentegatto è sempre stato un timido animale, tanto schivo da non voler incrociare il suo sguardo con il nostro se non per pura coincidenza, e solo quando qualche curioso e indiscreto turista si fosse intromesso nel suo territorio. Forse con la sua saggezza ha deciso di abbandonarci senza lasciare alcun indizio e per questo ha voluto che la sua storia rimanesse per sempre leggenda quasi sapesse che, come tale, il suo ricordo non potrà più essere cancellato.
