Unter jungen Christen ist eine große Unsicherheit hinsichtlich Fragen der persönlichen Spiritualität wahrzunehmen. Durch gezielte Interviews wird die alltägliche Praxis der Schriftmeditation unter jungen Erwachsenen erforscht. Dabei wird besonders die Motivationsebene analysiert: Wenn junge Erwachsene in der Bibel lesen - warum? Der empirische Befund wird schließlich in den Kontext der Kirchengeschichte gestellt: Wie gingen Christen in den Jahrhunderten mit der Bibel um? Wo zeigt sich Kontinuität? Wo weist die gegenwärtige Praxis neue Tendenzen auf? Wie ist Spiritualität im postmodernen Lebensentwurf verortet? Gerade junge Erwachsene, die Spiritualität vorwiegend unter dem Aspekt der Lebenshilfe einordnen, stellen die Frömmigkeitspraxis unter einen unnötigen Erfolgsdruck. Als Christ kann man hingegen entspannt an die Bibellektüre herangehen: Sie ist ein individueller Zugang zum Glauben und wird ergänzt durch gemeinschaftliche Ausdrucksformen von Spiritualität. Die Bibel gehört zentral zum christlichen Glauben und jede Generation muss sich neu der Aufgabe stellen, einen Zugang zu ihr zu finden.

Gegenstand des Buches sind die wichtigsten Ergebnisse einer repräsentativen Längsschnittstudie zur Jugendsexualität. Anhand quantitativer und qualitativer Befragungsverfahren wurden 1500 Jugendliche in Ost- und Westdeutschland zu Liebe, Partnerschaft und Sexualverhalten befragt. In diesem Zusammenhang werden auch zentrale Themen wie Aids, Schwangerschaftsabbruch, Verhütung und Familienplanung angesprochen. Ein wichtiges Merkmal dieser Studie liegt in der Kombination quantitativer und qualitativer Befragungsverfahren, die es ermöglichen, spezifische Konfliktfelder der Jugendsexualität wie z.B. Schwangerschaftskonflikt, Kind und/oder Karriere und Aids-Prävention zwischen Sollen und Wollen herauszuarbeiten. Die zeitliche Veränderung bzw. Stabilität von Einstellungen und Verhaltensweisen wird dadurch berücksichtigt, daß die Studie als Wiederholungsbefragung im Abstand von einem Jahr angelegt ist. Neben der Darstellung der wesentlichen deskriptiven Ergebnisse werden mögliche Ursachen zentraler Einstellungen und Verhaltensweisen empirisch überprüft und anschaulich dargestellt. Als theoretische Grundlage dienen die Theorie geplanten Verhaltens und der Rational-Choice-Ansatz.
