This book explores an important moment in Italian women’s theatre and cultural history: plays written for all-women casts between 1946 and the mid-1960s, authored for the most part by women and performed exclusively by women. Because they featured only female roles, they concentrated on aspects of specifically women’s experience, be it their spirituality, their future lives as wives and mothers, their present lives as workers or students, or their relationships with friends, sisters and mothers. Most often performed in a Catholic environment, they were meant to both entertain and educate, reflecting the specific issues that both performers and spectators had to confront in the years between the end of the war and the beginning of the economic miracle. Drawing on material never before researched, Educational Theatre for Women in Post-World War II Italy: A Stage of Their Own recovers the life and works of forgotten women playwrights while also discussing the role models that educational theatre offered to the young Italian women coming of age in the post-war years.

A partire da un ampio ventaglio di fonti documentarie, in gran parte inedite, il volume ricostruisce la genesi e lo sviluppo del movimento di Gioventù Studentesca. Tale realtà, nata come esperimento di apostolato di ambiente dell’Azione Cattolica milanese (sulla scorta dell’esperienza della Jeunesse Étudiante Chrétienne francese), arrivò a rappresentare per le sue peculiarità metodologiche e la sua capacità di attrarre studenti spesso lontani dalla Chiesa uno dei più significativi e discussi fermenti dell’AC negli anni Cinquanta e Sessanta. La vicenda di Gioventù Studentesca, fondata da Giancarlo Brasca nel 1945 e rifondata da don Luigi Giussani tra il 1953 e il 1954, si inserisce in un mondo cattolico in cui iniziavano ad affiorare i primi segni di una crisi che avrebbe raggiunto il suo culmine alcuni anni più tardi. Da questo punto di vista, il volume apre nuove prospettive per comprendere i cambiamenti che hanno investito la gioventù cattolica tra il Concilio e la contestazione.

English summary: The book describes the competition of social democratic, Christ democratic und socialist parties in West-Germany and Italy after World War II in European policy. In the context of the framework of the Cold War and the consolidation of the national political systems the author examines how political parties take position in confront of the first steps of the European integration, which strategies they followed and which ideas of Europe the politicians dealt with. The analysis incorporates related policy fields and semantic fields of Europe incorporating the international and national situation and also the situations within the parties. The study shows, how and why the competition of the parties was at the beginning controversial and why competition diminished. Contravvenendo alle periodizzazioni classiche, questo libro racconta la storia dell'incontro tra la Chiesa cattolica e il fascismo partendo dall'infanzia di Benito Mussolini, alla fine del lungo Ottocento, e arrivando al crollo della Repubblica sociale. La scelta risponde al bisogno di dar conto dei mutamenti che investono la società italiana e, al suo interno, il cattolicesimo, per giungere alla ricostruzione complessiva di una pagina cruciale della nostra storia. Già prima del Concordato la Chiesa alimentò il mito del duce e ampliò il consenso al regime. Ma l'ambizione totalitaria del fascismo spinse papa Pio XI a competere con Mussolini per il controllo delle coscienze.Dalla Conciliazione in avanti, così, i vertici vaticani adottarono una strategia politica giocata su due tavoli: fervido sostegno al governo di Mussolini, manifestato nel messaggio pubblico; rivendicazione di una separata e contrastante identità nel confronto riservato con i poteri politici. Non basta quindi seguire le stanze del potere. Soprattutto quando il fascismo diventa Stato: tutto si amplia, tutto si complica, mentre il degenerare dei rapporti internazionali, la realtà della guerra, la tragedia degli ebrei pongono la Chiesa, a partire dai suoi vertici, dinanzi a scelte ineludibili.

Si può parlare di un «Sessantotto cattolico»? E se è esistito, è stato solo una componente della contestazione giovanile, irrilevante e risucchiata dall’attrazione a sinistra, oppure si è trattato di un fenomeno consistente, caratterizzato da dinamiche specifiche e ramificato a livello europeo, se non su scala globale? Quali ne sono i riferimenti culturali, le reti di collegamento, i momenti e i luoghi in cui si è sviluppata una riflessione comune? Esiste davvero, insomma, una sorta di filo rosso che unisce gli studenti della JEC parigina e gli universitari cattolici che a Madrid scendono in piazza contro Franco, le avanguardie cattoliche della contestazione belga e gli studenti italiani che si sono mobilitati sin dall’inizio degli anni Sessanta? A tali interrogativi vuole rispondere questo libro, che analizza le direttrici di marcia che hanno portato i giovani cattolici europei «verso il Sessantotto», considerando un arco temporale ampio, che comprende il passaggio tra anni Cinquanta e Sessanta e gli orientamenti del mondo studentesco europeo del decennio che precede la contestazione. Italia, Francia, Belgio, Olanda, Germania, Austria, Spagna: paesi che hanno avuto un Sessantotto spesso dirompente, alimentato proprio dalla gioventù cattolica. Gli studenti cattolici hanno in parte anticipato le istanze di contestazione, dal protagonismo generazionale alla vocazione antiautoritaria, declinandola in ambito ecclesiale e sociale. Come i loro compagni, anzi ancor prima dei loro compagni, hanno vissuto i lunghi anni Sessanta come un anticipo di contestazione, mettendo in sinergia, non senza contraddizioni, tensioni spirituali, esperienze associative e aspirazioni sociali.
