O livro O Ditador e a Afrontosa Ditadura, de Joaquim Pereira Pimenta de Castro , é um libelo de defesa do autor que, ao longo das cerca de 90 páginas da edição original, tece todo um argumentário justificativo da ação do governo a que presidiu entre 24 de janeiro e 14 de maio de 1915, um executivo que ficou conhecido nos meios políticos e jornalísticos como a “afrontosa ditadura”. Pimenta de Castro foi um militar prestigiado que exerceu cargos de chefia na estrutura castrense e que, como outros, se envolveu (ou se viu envolvido) transitoriamente na vida política; integrou, como ministro da guerra e por curtos 35 dias, o governo empossado por Manuel de Arriaga aquando da sua eleição como primeiro presidente da novel República e, posteriormente, a pedido do mesmo político republicano, chefiaria, em 1915, o executivo português por escassos 4 meses, cargo que acumularia com as pastas da Guerra e dos Negócios Estrangeiros. Na sequência do derrube do seu governo, seria detido e posteriormente enviado para os Açores, com restrição explícita de regresso ao continente; data seguramente dessa estadia no arquipélago açoriano a elaboração da obra que agora se reimprime.
