Robert Ezra Park (1864–1944) gilt als der Begründer der empirischen Stadtsoziologie und der humanökologischen Forschungsrichtung an der Universität Chicago (»Chicagoer Schule für Soziologie«). Er prägte den Begriff des ›kollektiven Verhaltens‹, widmete sich der Erforschung von Rassenbeziehungen und Kulturkonflikten und Setzte sich mit der Bedeutung von kommunikativen Vorgängen auseinander. Park formulierte die »melting pot«-Theorie multiethnischer Integration von Einwanderern in die Kultur eines Landes. Große Aufmerksamkeit schenkte Park dem Einfluss von Massenmedien, insbesondere der Nachrichtenkommunikation. Seine theoretischen Annahmen lösten lang anhaltende Fachdiskussionen und eine große Zahl empirischer Arbeiten aus. Bemerkenswert ist auch der von Park bevorzugte methodische Ansatz: Er vertrat die Auffassung, dass sich Soziologen mit den Lebensumständen und Lebensweisen der Beforschten aus nächster Nähe vertraut machen sollten und gilt daher auch als der Begründer der soziologischen Ethnographie. Gabriela Christmann führt in das Leben, das Werk und in die Wirkung von Robert E. Park ein und skizziert die ihn prägenden Einflüsse. Para este autor, al igual que para su maestro Dewey, la sociedad existe y se mantiene gracias a la comunicación y en ella juega una serie de funciones esenciales.
