Many current texts in the area are just cookbooks and, as a result, students do not know why they perform the methods they are taught, or why the methods work. The strength of this book is that it readdresses these shortcomings; by using examples, often from real life and using real data, the authors show how the fundamentals of probabilistic and statistical theories arise intuitively. A Modern Introduction to Probability and Statistics has numerous quick exercises to give direct feedback to students. In addition there are over 350 exercises, half of which have answers, of which half have full solutions. A website gives access to the data files used in the text, and, for instructors, the remaining solutions. The only pre-requisite is a first course in calculus; the text covers standard statistics and probability material, and develops beyond traditional parametric models to the Poisson process, and on to modern methods such as the bootstrap.

1 Audience Students seeking master's degrees in applied statistics in the late 1960s and 1970s typically took a year-long sequence in statistical methods. Popular choices of the course text book in that period prior to the availability of high speed computing and graphics capability were those authored by Snedecor and Cochran, and Steel and Torrie. By 1980, the topical coverage in these classics failed to include a great many new and important elementary techniques in the data analyst's toolkit. In order to teach the statistical methods sequence with adequate coverage of topics, it became necessary to draw material from each of four or five text sources. Obviously, such a situation makes life difficult for both students and instructors. In addition, statistics students need to become proficient with at least one high-quality statistical software package. This book can serve as a standalone text for a contemporary year-long course in statistical methods at a level appropriate for statistics majors at the master's level or other quantitatively oriented disciplines at the doctoral level. The topics include both concepts and techniques developed many years ago and a variety of newer tools not commonly found in textbooks.

James Stevens' best-selling text, Intermediate Statistics is written for those who use, rather than develop, statistical techniques. Dr. Stevens focuses on a conceptual understanding of the material rather than on proving the results. SAS and SPSS are an integral part of each chapter. Definitional formulas are used on small data sets to provide conceptual insight into what is being measured. The assumptions underlying each analysis are emphasized and the reader is shown how to test the critical assumptions using SPSS or SAS. Printouts with annotations from SAS or SPSS show how to process the data for each analysis. The annotations highlight what the numbers mean and how to interpret the results. Numerical, conceptual, and computer exercises enhance understanding. Answers are provided for half of the exercises.

A Modern Approach To Regression With R written by Simon Sheather and has been published by Springer Science & Business Media this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2009-02-27 with Mathematics categories.

This book focuses on tools and techniques for building regression models using real-world data and assessing their validity. A key theme throughout the book is that it makes sense to base inferences or conclusions only on valid models. Plots are shown to be an important tool for both building regression models and assessing their validity. We shall see that deciding what to plot and how each plot should be interpreted will be a major challenge. In order to overcome this challenge we shall need to understand the mathematical properties of the fitted regression models and associated diagnostic procedures. As such this will be an area of focus throughout the book. In particular, we shall carefully study the properties of resi- als in order to understand when patterns in residual plots provide direct information about model misspecification and when they do not. The regression output and plots that appear throughout the book have been gen- ated using R. The output from R that appears in this book has been edited in minor ways. On the book web site you will find the R code used in each example in the text.

Statistics For Data Scientists written by Maurits Kaptein and has been published by Springer this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2022-02-27 with Computers categories.

This book provides an undergraduate introduction to analysing data for data science, computer science, and quantitative social science students. It uniquely combines a hands-on approach to data analysis – supported by numerous real data examples and reusable [R] code – with a rigorous treatment of probability and statistical principles. Where contemporary undergraduate textbooks in probability theory or statistics often miss applications and an introductory treatment of modern methods (bootstrapping, Bayes, etc.), and where applied data analysis books often miss a rigorous theoretical treatment, this book provides an accessible but thorough introduction into data analysis, using statistical methods combining the two viewpoints. The book further focuses on methods for dealing with large data-sets and streaming-data and hence provides a single-course introduction of statistical methods for data science.

S-PLUS is a powerful environment for the statistical and graphical analysis of data. It provides the tools to implement many statistical ideas which have been made possible by the widespread availability of workstations having good graphics and computational capabilities. This book is a guide to using S-PLUS to perform statistical analyses and provides both an introduction to the use of S-PLUS and a course in modern statistical methods. S-PLUS is available for both Windows and UNIX workstations, and both versions are covered in depth. The aim of the book is to show how to use S-PLUS as a powerful and graphical system. Readers are assumed to have a basic grounding in statistics, and so the book is intended for would-be users of S-PLUS, and both students and researchers using statistics. Throughout, the emphasis is on presenting practical problems and full analyses of real data sets. Many of the methods discussed are state-of-the-art approaches to topics such as linear and non-linear regression models, robust and smooth regression methods, survival analysis, multivariate analysis, tree-based methods, time series, spatial statistics, and classification. This second edition is intended for users of S-PLUS 3.3, 4.0, or later. It covers the recent developments in graphics and new statistical functionality, including bootstraping, mixed effects, linear and non-linear models, factor analysis, and regression with autocorrelated errors. The material on S-PLUS programming has been re-written to explain the full story behind the object-oriented programming features. The authors have written several software libraries which enhance S-PLUS; these and all the datasets used are available on the Internet in versions for Windows and UNIX. There are also on-line complements covering advanced material, further exercises and new features of S-PLUS as they are introduced. Dr. Venables is Head of Department and Senior Lecturer at the Department of
