Jewel is on the run from an abusive home situation and furtively living at school. After Maya discovers her classmate’s secret, should she tell? Or can she help Jewel on her own? Thirteen-year-old Jewel has been holding her life together ever since her older sister, Charmaine, suddenly left home with no forwarding address. She tried to find Charmaine once, but that only brought her family to the attention of the police. Now Jewel keeps her head down at school, looks after her special-needs brother as well as she can, and tries to steer clear of her parents and their shady friends. When her father’s friend comes into her bedroom one night, Jewel finally understands why Charmaine had to leave home. Soon she is on the run herself. When her food runs out, Jewel chances upon a new place to live — the cupboard of the art room at school. It turns out to be surprisingly easy to live under the radar when you have perfected the art of being almost invisible. That is, until Jewel’s classmates, Maya and Lily, discover her washing her hair in the girls’ washroom at school and making breakfast in the lunchroom. They take her on as their project, finding her places to sleep, fixing her hair and wardrobe — even as they can’t quite understand her terror, or why she is so afraid of seeking adult help. But the girls help keep Jewel and her secret safe — until they no longer can. Told in the alternating voices of Maya and Jewel, this is a thought-provoking and moving story about loyalty, privilege, keeping secrets, and what it means to be a good friend. They Are Almost Invisible is a collection of poems written about childhood and the transition to adulthood, with special focus on adolescence, that strange time lost in between. At times serious, at times comic, and always a bit pleasantly eccentric, this new collection from Elizabeth Carmer is endlessly surprising. As readers, we are lucky that Carmer's They Are Almost Invisible, along with her other new book, Halfway Friends for Decades, introduce us to a startlingly different and exciting new voice in contemporary American poetry.

Their father was married seven times. When their mother died at the age of thirty, Nita was seven years old and her sister, Ilene, was nine. They found themselves at the mercy of several stepmothers. Some were kind and others were cruel. Their father loved liquor, women and foul language. Was he a master manipulator or a poor soul reacting to the cards that life had dealt him? Ilene and Nita followed him from one woman to the next, never feeling loved or lovable, even by him. The sisters reacted to this treatment differently. The family secrets that were divulged through the years had a detrimental effect on the extended family. This story shows how important it is to make ethical choices that enable us to have no regrets in spite of chaos.

Almost Invisible is a fantasy adventure. It begins when a brother and sister, Cleo and Ramses, go to live in a most unusual house with their eccentric paleontologist grandfather Normal Petersen and his odd and quirky assistant Sam. Soon after their arrival, some unexplained things happen which Sam attributes to mysterious creatures he calls Pixquiks. Evidence of the existence of the creatures mounts, which even makes the doubting paleontologist a believer, and soon the creatures reveal themselves and their secret world. The humans find the creatures to be both intriguing and helpful. But everything gets turned upside-down when the Pixquiks receive a distressing message from their far away home on the island of Invisible in the distant Arctic. In response, an adventure is launched that involves smuggling the Pixquiks across international borders, flying in private jets and on a contraption no one has ever seen before, scaling precipitous cliffs, stealing boats, dodging bullets, and fighting pirates to save Invisible, its secret, and its inhabitants; and to spare the world of the sorrowful fate that could befall humanity if the secret of the Pixquiks finds its way into the wrong hands-which seems quite possible.
