In the western literature, mathematics achievement and its related student self-concept are important education outcomes reciprocally linked and mutually reinforcing. The reciprocal relation model is examined in this study to assess its generalization in a cross-cultural setting. Hong Kong is the site of choice because of its exposure to influences between British and Chinese cultures. A contextual factor of English push has been examined for male and female students behind the language switch from English to Chinese (Cantonese) in most secondary schools. The research findings are employed to compare features of the reciprocal model two years before and after Hong Kong's sovereignty handover from the United Kingdom to China. This study examined the relationship between academic domain specific self-concept (specifically mathematical and verbal) and the academic achievement in mathematics and English of young adolescents. Middle school students in grades seven and eight ranging in age from 12 to 15 years completed three subscales of the Self-Description Questionnaire-II (general school, verbal and mathematical self-concept). Results indicated that females displayed lower levels of mathematical self-concept while males displayed lower levels of academic self-concept, verbal self-concept and verbal achievement scores. No significant gender differences were found in mathematics achievement. Educational implications are discussed. (Contains 6 tables.).

A gender gap in mathematics achievement has been found in many countries. Researchers are trying to find ways to reduce the gap. Single-sex schooling was then discussed, but the results varied. As well as, limited number of studies examined the role of single-sex schooling to the relationship between gender and mathematics achievement. However, math self- efficacy has been confirmed to influence students' mathematics achievement successfully. For capturing the relationship between single-sex schooling and mathematics achievement in South Korea and Hong Kong, also exploring the role of math self-efficacy to the gender difference, PISA 2012 dataset was used in the current study. Hierarchical regression models were used to address the research questions. The results suggest that single sex schooling is not related to mathematics achievement in both South Korea and Hong Kong. Also, single sex schooling does not moderate the relationship between gender and mathematics achievement in both countries. Besides, a significant gender gap in mathematics achievement was found in both countries, after taking into account relevant school level factors. Finally, math self-efficacy mediates the relationship between gender and mathematics achievement in South Korea, but not in Hong Kong.

The Third International Mathematics and Science Study is the largest and most ambitious study ever undertaken by the International Association for the Evaluation of Educational Achievement. Forty-five countries collected data in more than 30 languages. Five grade levels were tested in the two subject areas. This report describes the science achievement of seventh and eighth graders, emphasizing the results from the eighth-grade assessment. Results are presented for the 41 countries that completed all the steps necessary to appear in this report. Singapore was the top performing country at both grade levels, with Colombia, Kuwait, and South Africa performing at the lowest levels. Perhaps the most striking finding was the large difference in average achievement between the top-performing and bottom-performing countries. Results provided a chain of overlapping countries, with most countries having an average achievement similar to that of a cluster of others, but with large differences between the top and bottom of the chain. In most countries and internationally, boys outperformed girls at both grade levels. The majority of eighth graders in nearly every country indicated that they liked science, but not all students had positive feelings about the subject. Home factors were strongly related to achievement in every participating country, but relationships between science achievement and instructional practices were less clear within and across countries.
