Communicative Language Teaching (CLT) is a teaching approach which was first introduced in the late 1960s in the US and UK and shifted the focus of language teaching from language awareness to language use and function. CLT aims to make students communicatively competent in terms not only of linguistic, but also socio-linguistic and strategic competence. CLT is seen as one of the approaches which can help learners develop their skills, knowledge, and abilities for effective communication, resulting in its worldwide application in different contexts. However, from the outset, there was no clear agreement about its principles and techniques, and teachers faced problems in describing and applying it. Consequently, CLT has been broadly examined and investigated in different teaching contexts, especially EFL settings. However, there are only a few studies which explore the appropriacy and cultural components of this approach in international contexts. This study was therefore designed to explore upper-secondary school teacher and student attitudes and beliefs towards: (1) the implementation of CLT and their English classes and (2) the inclusion of cultural and intercultural aspects in the principles of CLT and as a result their English classes, with a focus on the development of Intercultural Communicative Competence (ICC), as determined by current foreign language teaching policy in many countries.

The purpose of this study was to describe how higher education language instructors design mobile-assted language learning environments for communicative language teaching. As our focus in second language acquisition has moved toward a communicative approach, the media richness and communication savvy of mobile devices can plan a vital role in this new communicative goal. Offering authentic content and dialogue opportunities, language instructors can take advantage of these devices leading language learners to achieve true fluency in another language. While the opportunity for communicative language teaching with MALL is viable, how to best design MALL environments for this purpose is still in its infancy. Answering questions regarding device type, application usage, theoretical foundations, and communicative task type and frequency will add to the richness of research for planning communicative MALL experiences. This study focused on two research questions. The first question explored how higher education language instructors design mobile assisted language learning environments. The second dealt with influences that ignite those decisions. Four higher education language instructors participated in this case study. Data consisted of semi-structured interviews, document reviews, and observations, and were analyzed using general qualitative analysis and the constant comparative method. Three themes emerged in the findings: (1) describing the communicative language learning environment enhanced by mobility, (2) meeting student, organizational, and instructional needs/goals, and (3) planning the implementation of MALL experiences for communicative language purposes. A discussion integrated these findings with interpretations in order to answer the research questions. The data suggested higher education language instructors identify goals, and create authentic learning experiences via communicative modes in order to achieve those goals. Further, the data suggested they have theoretical alignments with constructionism and situated learning, hold strong beliefs in CLT, and have beliefs aobut mobility that inform how they design communicative MALL environments. .

This book describes a study which examines perceptions of both students and teachers in Taiwan about secondary schools and different types of cram school. The reality for many Taiwanese students is that they experience, often for many years, a mixture of regular secondary and cram school input. Cram schools are known to vary widely in teaching style, but systematic studies on this type of school are rare. The present study looks "below the surface" of ELT in cram school and regular secondary level classes in Taiwan, in the wake of the recent educational reforms that have been introduced by the Taiwan authorities. The study focuses in particular on the changes in secondary English teaching, the implementation of Communicative Language Teaching (CLT), as well as teachers' understanding and describes and seeks to account for a reluctance to depart from traditional language teaching methods that have, elsewhere, been largely discredited.

As one of the most popular language teaching approaches established in ESL (English as a Second Language) countries, the Communicative Language Teaching (CLT) has encountered many challenges when introduced and implemented in EFL (English as a Foreign Language) contexts, as demonstrated by a review of approximately 50 previous works pertaining to CLT and various facets of its application in EFL countries and in China's EFL contexts in particular. Questions have arisen concerning whether CLT should be enacted in China's EFL classrooms. Employing narrative inquiry, this dissertation investigates the English as a second language practices of four participants from China in the U.S., in the hope of shedding some light on whether China's English language teachers should enact CLT or not. Focusing on exploring and addressing the communicative difficulties encountered by the participants in the U.S., this narrative inquiry presents how inadequate command of English skills especially communicative competence affects the participants' academic learning and non-academic aspects of life. The lack of English communicative competence is identified as one of the biggest barriers preventing them from achieving a greater academic success and integrating into the American life. It is clearly shown that China's traditional English language teaching methods characterized by grammatical analysis, translation, and intensive reading contributes to anything but students' communicative competence. The participants' perceived need for communicative competence explicitly underlines a vital call for enacting the Communicative Language Teaching approach in China's EFL classrooms. While gaining valuable insights regarding how to improve China's English language teaching from the perspective of Chinese students in the U.S., this narrative inquiry provides important implications for the educational institutions in the host countries in an endeavor to help international students become more linguistically proficient as well as socio-culturally empowered. Although this research is conducted with Chinese participants targeted at China's contexts, it has the potential to transcend national boundaries and spark global concerns, as "it opens the door for researchers in other nations to begin to explore a similar phenomenon in their national contexts" (Clandinin & Hamilton, 2010, p. 1115).
