This monograph reflects a culmination of influences. Over a decade ago, a graduate student at the University of Waterloo, Dr. Carl Sordoni, had worked with one of the present authors (H.L.) to develope a dissertation concerned with humor. At that time, the literature on humor was scanty. There was much that had been written by philosophers and scholars in literature. But in psychology, especially empirical research in psychology, there was not an overwhelming literature to give substance to the belief that humor was an important element in human affairs. Memories of that dissertation are fond. The findings were disappoint ing, but the execution of the research provided us with much hilarity. Though the dissertation research did not pan out as we had hoped, we had begun to look for the influence of humor in other investigations that we were conducting. Two published studies from that era are described in this book, one of which grew as an off-shoot of a dissertation by Dr. Paul Antrobus. In these studies not only did we find evidence that humor could be predicted and understood within particular contexts, but again we found enjoyment in doing the studies.

This study concentrated on the hypothesis long held by theorists, therapists and laypersons, that a sense of humor reduces the deleterious impact of stressful experiences. A study consisting of 50 white subjects (25 male and 25 female insurance claims personnel) was conducted in the work environment to investigate the main hypothesis that subjects' measured senses of humor are related to their reported use of humor in coping during stressful situations. Additional hypotheses concerning age and education were investigated to determine their relation to one's sense of humor. It was hypothesized that subjects' chronological ages and years of formal education are related to their measured senses of humor. A fourth hypothesis concerning sex differences stated, "that there would be a greater relation between the measure of humor and reported use of humor in coping during stressful situations for females than for males." the instruments used in this study were developed by researchers Lefcourt and Martin and included the Situational Humor Response Questionnaire (SHRQ) which assesses subjects overall sense of humor and the Coping Humor Scale (CHS) which measures the degree to which subjects report using humor in coping during stressful events.

[Abstract] This study utilized the heuristic model of qualitative research to explore the question, "What is the experience of using humor as a coping strategy. The six phases of heuristics were exercised and included initial engagement, immersion into the question, incubation, illumination, explication, and a creative synthesis. Because of the experiential nature of the question tha1 arose from my personal experience, heuristic methodology was the reseal method of choice. A review of the current literature revealed no identical studies connected to the use of humor as a coping strategy. This study was arranged within the framework of the literature reviewed. This research" accomplished through comprehensive interviews with eight co-researchers and the immersion into my own experience of using humor as a coping strategy. The data was organized using steps in the heuristic formula. The analysis revealed five themes and they are identified as, I. Early awareness of the use of humor, ll. Reflection of Intelligence, Ill. Self-Esteem, IV. Use in Personal and Professional Life, V. Physiological Responses. The identified themes depicted the use, awareness and effectiveness of using humor as a coping strategy. The co-researchers have perfected this strategy and all verbalized positive outcomes from related experiences. The findings of this research could be used by educators, clinicians, public service personnel and medical professionals. This study lends itself to providing an awareness of the benefits of this skill when dealing with stress, loss or difficult life issues.
