Negli ultimi dieci anni c’è stata un’ampia fase dell’innovazione tecnologica che ha portato alla diffusione di grandi quantità di dati in diversi campi applicativi. Le aziende in primo luogo hanno a disposizione moltissimi elementi informativi riguardanti i loro clienti, ma anche nella medicina, nella genetica, nella biologia, e in molti altri ambienti applicativi sono ora a disposizioni grandi masse di dati. Tale realtà porta con sé la necessità di sviluppare e conoscere nuovi strumenti di analisi statistica. In questo contesto molti strumenti e metodi di analisi hanno origini diverse, in particolare dalla statistica e dal machine learning, ma condividono molti aspetti. Questo libro descrive i concetti più importanti di queste aree in un’impostazione unificata. Seppure l’approccio sia statistico, l’enfasi è sui concetti piuttosto che sulla formulazione matematica. Vengono presentati molti esempi corredati da un’ampia varietà di illustrazioni grafiche. Il libro dovrebbe quindi costituire un utile strumento per gli statistici e per chiunque altro è interessato al data mining sia nel mondo aziendale che in quello scientifico.

Il libro si pone essenzialmente tre domande. Quanto è cambiata la componente più importante della partecipazione religiosa in Italia tra il 1993 ed il 2019? (Si dirà anche qualcosa sugli anni della sindemia da Covid e del lockdown, e si vedrà che non hanno prodotto inversioni di tendenza.) Come è cambiata l’influenza di altri fattori sociali su questa forma di partecipazione religiosa? Come è cambiata l’influenza di questa forma di partecipazione su altri aspetti della vita sociale? Non si tratta solo di documentare un calo, ma di provare a guardare cosa avviene dentro una porzione più piccola, ma pur sempre molto importante, della società italiana. Quanto e come pesa il sesso, la generazione di appartenenza, l’età e quanto ha pesato essere nati o essere cresciuti in certi periodi storici invece che in altri? Tra i tanti segni “meno” si vede però emergere anche un segno “più”: quello della influenza di questa forma di partecipazione religiosa sulla disponibilità a gesti di solidarietà, accoglienza ed aiuto nei confronti di altre persone. I “praticanti” sono oggi un gruppo sociale molto diverso da quello che erano un quarto di secolo fa. E si avviano a diventare presto qualcosa di ancora diverso da ciò che sono oggi: alcune dinamiche di quella trasformazione vengono qui evidenziate e discusse.

Questo volume raccoglie temi, teorie e concetti degli insegnamenti che compongono il corso di studio al suo avvio, offrendo una visione d’insieme della rilevanza della prospettiva sociologica rispetto alle contemporanee sfide della sostenibilità.
