Kaum ein kulturwissenschaftliches Fach ist in den Medien in solcher Weise positiv besetzt wie die Arch ologie. Mit diesem Privileg wird jedoch leichtsinnig umgegangen. Die vorliegende Untersuchung versteht sich als Aufruf zu einer kritischen Auseinandersetzung mit dem Fach Arch ologie und einer sozial verantwortlicheren, ffentlich engagierteren und damit relevanteren Arch ologie. Das Buch widmet sich der Repr sentation des Faches und der Inszenierung arch ologischer Inhalte in einem Medium, ber das ein Gro teil der Bev lkerung mit Arch ologie in Kontakt kommt. Im Rahmen einer vergleichenden Analyse und Bewertung einer Auswahl an arch ologischen TV-Dokumentationen wird der Frage nachgegangen, welche arch ologiebezogenen Inhalte sie transportieren, welche ffentlichen Bilder und Assoziationen sie pr gen und in welcher Relation diese zur arch ologischen Realit t stehen. Neben methodischen Anleihen in der Filmanalyse und unter Zuhilfenahme geschichtswissenschaftlicher Ans tze wird eine arch ologische Perspektive auf den Untersuchungsgegenstand geboten. Bei aller scharfen Kritik an arch ologisch fragw rdigen Formaten verf llt die Forschungsarbeit jedoch nicht einer einseitigen Medienschelte. Entgegen typisch wissenschaftlichen Abwehrreflexen l sst sich dem Fernsehen keine alleinige Verantwortung f r problematische Dokumentationen zuweisen. Arch ologen tragen eine Mitverantwortung f r die ffentliche Repr sentation ihres Faches, v.a. wenn sie unreflektiert ihre Rolle bei der Mitgestaltung und Perpetuierung stereotyper Bilder einnehmen und sich medial regelrecht durch den Kakao ziehen lassen! This volume investigates how urban growth and prosperity transformed the cities of the Roman Mediterranean in the last centuries BCE and the fi rst centuries CE, integrating debates about Roman urban space with discourse on Roman urban history. The contributions explore how these cities developed landscapes full of civic memory and ritual, saw commercial priorities transforming the urban environment, and began to expand signifi cantly beyond their wall circuits. vii PREFACE It was 13 years ago that we met for the ?rst time at a German developmental psychology conference. One of us, Wolfgang Friedlmeier (WF), was interested in ontogenetic development from a cross-cultural perspective. He presented a study on the development of empathy and distress in preschool age, dealing with how far children from different cultures respond to comparable demands with different emotions and regulation strategies. The other, Manfred Holodynski (MH), was - terested in ontogenetic development from the perspective of internalization: how processes that are originally socially distributed between persons are transformed into mental processes within the individual. He presented a study on the devel- ment of the emotions pride and shame in preschool age. This led the two of us to discover our common interest in central issues of emotional development: What role do the emotions play in an individual’s activity regulation? What is it exactly that is “developing” when we talk about emotional development? Do emotional processes have a social genesis? And what is the role of the early social interactions between children and their caregivers, along with the obvious fact that individuals grow up and live in completely different cultures? Even at this time, we both already suspected that the social and cultural embedment of the individual would prove to be a key to understanding how the diversity of human emotions and their regulation develop.

Sie dokumentieren mit bisher unbekannten Manuskripten über James und Spinoza die Anfänge der wissenschaftlichen Arbeit Leont'evs in der Psychologie, die Phase der an Kornilov orientierten reaktologischen Experimente unter der Leitung von Lurija, den Beginn der Zusammenarbeit mit Vygotskij und besonders breit und mit zahlreichen bisher unbekannten Manuskripten und Briefen die Auseinandersetzung mit der instrumentellen bzw. kulturellen Psychologie Vygotskijs und die Anfänge der Arbeit an der Tätigkeitstheorie in Char'kov. Vor allem für das Verständnis dieser Phase in der Entwicklung des leont'ev-schen Denkens sind die hier zum ersten Mal in deutscher Sprache vorliegenden Texte außerordentlich interessant, für das Verständnis des Verhältnisses von Leont'ev und Vygotskij sind sie unverzichtbar. Die von Leont'ev selbst publizierten sowie auch die posthum erschienenen Arbeiten sind damit vollständig in deutscher Sprache zugänglich mit Ausnahme eines mit A. Leont'ev unterzeichneten Aufsatzes aus dem Jahr 1923, dessen Autorschaft bisher von den Nachkommen noch nicht sicher geklärt werden konnte sowie eines Artikels über Psychologie aus der Großen Sowjetischen Enzyklopädie, der seiner Länge wegen nicht berücksichtigt wurde. Die bisher auch in russischer Sprache noch nicht veröffentlichten Manuskripte werden hier in ihrem größten Teil mitgeteilt. Nicht berücksichtigt wurden (nach dem derzeitigen Stand ihrer Kenntnis) lediglich Varianten bzw. kleinere Enzyklopädie-Artikel, so dass der die Frühphase der Theorieentwicklung Leont'evs abdeckende Textbestand jetzt vollständig zur Verfügung steht.
