Tomo I – Il territorio circostante la città di Grosseto è stato al centro di numerosi progetti di ricerca condotti da studiosi afferenti all’Università di Siena e alla Soprintendenza Archeologica per la Toscana. Sono indagini nate con finalità diverse, in tempi diversi e applicando metodologie specifiche delle discipline che le hanno originate. Tuttavia esse hanno in comune l’oggetto, il paesaggio nel suo divenire storico. Paesaggio nel quale è nata e si e sviluppata una città che non aveva origini romane. Il filo conduttore dei saggi che qui presentiamo è dunque la peculiarità di un territorio e di questo modesto villaggio che finirà per assorbire tutte le funzioni della città etrusco-romana di Roselle. Tomo II – Lo scavo di una città come Grosseto è un’occasione per comprendere i processi di trasformazione di un villaggio rurale che nei secoli centrali del Medioevo assorbì progressivamente tutte le funzioni della città etrusco-romana di Roselle. Questo volume presenta pertanto l’edizione degli scavi condotti dall’Università di Siena e dalla Soprintendenza Archeologica per la Toscana unitamente ad una serie di saggi sulla valutazione del potenziale archeologico nel centro storico e costituisce un affondo dei temi e dei quesiti storiografici proposti nel I tomo.

The nEU-Med project is part of the Horizon 2020 programme, in the ERC Advanced project category. It began in October 2015 and the University of Siena is the host institution of the project. The project is focussed upon two Tuscan riverine corridors leading from the Gulf of Follonica in the Tyrrhenian Sea to the Colline Metallifere. It aims to document and analyze the form and timeframe of economic growth in this part of the Mediterranean, which took place between the 7th and the 12thc. Central to this is an understanding of the processes of change in human settlements, in the natural and farming landscapes in relation to the exploitation of resources, and in the implementation of differing political strategies. This volume presents the multi-disciplinary research focussed upon the key site of the project, Vetricella, and its territory. Vetricella is thought to be the site of Valli, a royal property in the Tuscan march. It is the only Early Medieval property to be extensively studied in Italy. Located on Italy’s Tyrrhenian coast, the archaeology and history of this site provide new insights on estate management, metal production and wider Mediterranean relations in the later first millennium. Apart from reports on the archaeology, the finds from excavations and environmental studies, three essays consider the wider European historical and archaeological context of Vetricella. Future monographs will feature studies by members of the project team on aspects of Vetricella, its finds and territory.

Il volume presenta l’indagine archeologica eseguita a Palazzo Vecchio, che ha consentito di riportare alla luce parte del teatro romano su cui si sono depositate stratificazioni databili fino all’epoca moderna. I dati emersi durante l’indagine hanno permesso di mostrare come il teatro, costruito in occasione della fondazione di Florentia, cambiò la sua destinazione d’uso in età tardo antica. Successivamente il monumento si trasformò in una sorta di contenitore in cui si riversarono consistenti dark layers. Tra la s. m. dell’XI e il XII sec., poi, l’area del teatro fu recuperata con la realizzazione di edifici, torri, livellamenti e terrazzamenti. In seguito i ruderi della struttura, che manteneva comunque intatta la sua mole, entrarono a far parte di quello spazio urbano gestito dalla famiglia degli Uberti, che ne fece una vera e propria enclave urbana. Il volume accoglie un cospicuo catalogo dei ricchi reperti ceramici bassomedievali, ritrovati con lo scavo, e che tornano, poi, a parlarci di un’economia complessa frutto di una società in forte crescita.

This open access book demonstrates the application of simulation modelling and network analysis techniques in the field of Roman studies. It summarizes and discusses the results of a 5-year research project carried out by the editors that aimed to apply spatial dynamical modelling to reconstruct and understand the socio-economic development of the Dutch part of the Roman frontier (limes) zone, in particular the agrarian economy and the related development of settlement patterns and transport networks in the area. The project papers are accompanied by invited chapters presenting case studies and reflections from other parts of the Roman Empire focusing on the themes of subsistence economy, demography, transport and mobility, and socio-economic networks in the Roman period. The book shows the added value of state-of-the-art computer modelling techniques and bridges computational and conventional approaches. Topics that will be of particular interest to archaeologists are the question of (forced) surplus production, the demographic and economic effects of the Roman occupation on the local population, and the structuring of transport networks and settlement patterns. For modellers, issues of sensitivity analysis and validation of modelling results are specifically addressed. This book will appeal to students and researchers working in the computational humanities and social sciences, in particular, archaeology and ancient history.
