Excerpt from Art of Class Management and Discipline There are many works on school management that present the theory of school order and control from the point of view of the principal or superintendent. The pedagogical student learns in her normal or training school all about school virtues and motives. She is made acquainted with systematic treatises on the theory of school government. But after she has graduated and has come face to face with a class of mischievous boys, the theories that seemed so reasonable before are now strangely impotent. She finds that she is confronted by a condition, not a theory. Class management is an art and a fine art at that. An art must be acquired by practice; and if one would make rapid progress and avoid errors, a teacher is necessary. This little book is intended as a slight contribution to the art of class discipline. It is offered to that hapless young woman who is just beginning to teach. Excerpt from School Discipline The following chapters have been written with the needs and problems of the young teacher primarily in view. An effort has been made to present in a concrete way the various steps that may be taken to establish a wholesome school "spirit" that will reduce disciplinary difficulties to a minimum. To this end, most of the chapters deal rather with positive and non-coercive than with restrictive and repressive methods of treatment. By way of introduction, the essential characteristics of a well-disciplined school are described, and the problem of creating these conditions is stated. The unruly or disorderly school is then assumed; the various causes which lead to disorder are analyzed; and the steps that may be taken to transform the situation are discussed in detail with as many typical concrete illustrations as the limitations of space permit. Coercive measures are treated briefly, following the discussion of the positive measures. An attempt has been made to outline the evolution of the idea of punishment as a coercive agency; and the different types of penalties commonly employed in the school are described and evaluated. Excerpt from School Management: Including a General View of the Work of Education With Some Account of the Faculties From the Teacher's Point of View: Organisation: Discipline and Moral Training Invention or novelty has not been my aim. Still, I trust it will be found that some portions of the work are new, and that, though I have not scrupled to make use of any facts of value within my reach, these have not been adopted without careful examina tion, and their points of connection with the general subject realised. I have done my best also, wherever I have borrowed any one's peculiar property or the special form of an idea, to acknowledge my indebted ness. That I have succeeded in doing this in all cases I dare not hope. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. On the New Edition of Building Classroom Discipline “I feel the book is the best overview of Classroom Management for an entry-level teacher. It has a strong theoretical basis and provides students with a sound overview of classroom management. . . . [E]ach chapter is easy to follow and . . . [t]he case examples and the application examples strengthen each chapter. . . . A true gem of a book!” --Aubrey Fine, CA Poly University [Two things] I like about the new edition that the [previous edition did] not have [are] the chapter on self-assessment, as well as [the] inclusion of the Be the Teacher Scenarios in all the chapters. My students have enjoyed the Be the Teacher practice exercises a lot, and I am glad that with the new edition they will have even more opportunities to practice.” --Madalina Tanase, University of North Florida “Not only does Charles provide the essence of each model, but he focuses on how to execute the model in a classroom. The step-by-step approach is exceptional.” --Deborah Burris, Southern Illinios University – Carbondale Appropriate for courses in Classroom Management and Classroom Discipline.
