There are three sections to this book: First, look at how Asians' lifespans have altered since the 1980s. b) Secondly, Asian nations have a higher life expectancy than the rest of the world due to their lifestyle choices. 3) How can someone who lives outside the blue zone live longer? The life expectancy, variations in life expectancy around the world, and changes in Asia's life expectancy are all covered in the first chapter. Asia's survival rate is discussed in the second chapter, along with how their health altered and the contributing variables. What age is discussed in the third chapter? How is lifespan determined? Moreover, how does growth compare to life expectancy? What elements are discussed in the fourth chapter as the basis for life expectancy? Why do Asians live longer, then? The fifth chapter details which Asian nations have the highest and lowest life expectancy rates. Chapter six focuses on China, a way of life, and the differences between eastern and western ideologies. Chapter 7 discusses Japan, its cuisine, and its well-kept secrets to long life. Have you ever found yourself wondering why countries on the Asian continent have such low obesity rates and live longer? Why, despite consuming white rice, people of all ages from Asian countries typically appear lean, fit and healthy? Or how, in the face of incredible pollution, a great many people from these countries maintain flawless complexions? You can find a number of answers to these and other questions in "Asian Diet and Longevity," a cookbook that offers a variety of recipes from five Asian nations and delves into the countless health benefits and philosophies of each. Aside from the bragging rights of learning complex and ancient recipes like Korean Bibimbap or a version of Japanese Bento lunches, aspiring chefs can delve into the balance and nutrition of each meal and diet. A majority of these recipes reflect the diversity and overall health of each cuisine, how versatile, complex and delicious they manage to be. Meanwhile, a large percentage of the vegetables, herbs and spices used to give each recipe distinct flavor, taste and texture, while simultaneously lowering the body's cholesterol, boosting the immune system, aiding digestion and so much more. Spices like turmeric and lemongrass, which gained attention in the West as part of trendy diets, or fermented foods like kimchi, are actual staples of most Asian dishes. Most Asian people eat these types of healthy foods and ingredients on a daily basis from youth to old age, without fanfare, and enjoy long, illness-free lives as a consequence."Asian Diet and Longevity" tackles head-on the issues of Western imbalanced diets by providing thoughtful analysis of Eastern philosophies of health, wholeness and balance. A few of the dishes included in the recipes in this book are fried (and amazingly tasty), because, centuries of tradition in Asia allows, even calls for enjoyment combined with discipline, rather than just discipline and a plate of plain lettuce. However, the book does more than generalizing broadly, it also looks at each country separately: India, Japan, South Korea, China, and Thailand. The differences and similarities are discussed and explained to promote a greater understanding of the places with the spirits, from there the food comes and, of course, how it can transform the lifestyles of those who are adventurous enough to give it a chance. Truthfully, between the exquisite taste and incredible health benefits of the foods listed here, "Asian Diet and Longevity" proves that a person does not actually need a sense of adventure to appreciate these recipes. All you need is a set of working taste buds and a kitchen, and, knowing how to enjoy it yourself.

The population of Asia is growing both larger and older. Demographically the most important continent on the world, Asia's population, currently estimated to be 4.2 billion, is expected to increase to about 5.9 billion by 2050. Rapid declines in fertility, together with rising life expectancy, are altering the age structure of the population so that in 2050, for the first time in history, there will be roughly as many people in Asia over the age of 65 as under the age of 15. It is against this backdrop that the Division of Behavioral and Social Research at the U.S. National Institute on Aging (NIA) asked the National Research Council (NRC), through the Committee on Population, to undertake a project on advancing behavioral and social research on aging in Asia. Aging in Asia: Findings from New and Emerging Data Initiatives is a peer-reviewed collection of papers from China, India, Indonesia, Japan, and Thailand that were presented at two conferences organized in conjunction with the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Indian National Science Academy, Indonesian Academy of Sciences, and Science Council of Japan; the first conference was hosted by the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences in Beijing, and the second conference was hosted by the Indian National Science Academy in New Delhi. The papers in the volume highlight the contributions from new and emerging data initiatives in the region and cover subject areas such as economic growth, labor markets, and consumption; family roles and responsibilities; and labor markets and consumption.

Population aging is perhaps the single biggest economic and social obstacle confronting AsiaÕs future. The region-wide demographic transition towards an older population is fundamentally reshaping the demographic landscape, and is giving rise to two key socio-economic challenges. This timely book provides an in-depth analysis of these challenges and presents concrete policy options for tackling them. First, the expert contributors argue, Asia must find ways to sustain rapid economic growth in the face of less favorable demographics, which implies slower growth of the workforce. Second, they contend, Asia must find ways to deliver affordable, adequate and sustainable old-age economic security for its growing elderly population. Underpinned by rigorous analysis, a wide range of concrete policy options for sustaining economic growth while delivering economic security for the elderly are then presented. These include Asia-wide policy options Ð relevant to the entire region Ð such as building up strong national pension systems, whilst other policy options are more relevant to sub-groups of countries. This stimulating and informative book will be of great interest to academics, students and researchers with an interest in Asian studies, economics generally, and more specifically, public sector economics.

This publication provides updated statistics on a comprehensive set of economic, financial, social, and environmental measures as well as select indicators for the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The report covers the 49 regional members of ADB. It discusses trends in development progress and the challenges to achieving inclusive and sustainable economic growth across Asia and the Pacific. This 52nd edition discusses how the COVID-19 pandemic has intensified the challenges of meeting development targets, which needed urgent attention even before the global health crisis began. To put into practice the "leave no one behind" principle of the SDGs, the availability of more detailed and informative data is crucial. With the pandemic intensifying society's reliance on digital platforms for remote working and learning, as well as for shopping and entertainment, the 2021 report features a special supplement, Capturing the Digital Economy: A Proposed Measurement Framework and Its Applications, which is rooted in input-output analysis and uses readily available national accounts data. The study provides a sound basis on which to assess the relative importance of the digital economy in national and global production processes.

Contestations of Memory in Southeast Asia applies a new theoretical literature on social memory to remembered events in Burma, Laos, Vietnam, Malaysia, Singapore, the Philippines and Indonesia. Highlighting connections between theorizing based on European examples and unresolved memory issues in East and Southeast Asia, the authors show how comparative study of the interpenetration of politics and lived bodily experience, of communal and personal memories, and of dominant and suppressed narratives, can yield insights into the human potential to become either perpetrators, victims or bystanders. The memories found within different groups in any society are open to negotiation, suppression, contestation, or revision in the ever-evolving politics of the present. The searching and close-grained analyses of contemporary issues found in the volume vividly illustrate the essentially plural and multivocal nature of social memories, and demonstrate the intricate connection between transnational, national and sub-national politics. Readers seeking a more nuanced and complex understanding of the past and of its continued relevance to the present and future, will find here much food for thought.

In this volume, a leading group of scholars pose the question, has the Philippine economy rejoined the dynamic East Asian mainstream and, if so, what set of policies and priorities are required to maintain the strong economic momentum of recent years? Successive chapters address issues related to growth and poverty, infrastructure and urbanization, education, health, the environment, energy, development finance, and governance and institutions. The book has been written with a broad audience in mind. First and foremost it is for readers in, and interested in, this fascinating and important country with a population that now exceeds a hundred million. Second, it will appeal to those in the broader development community with an interest in the analytical and policy challenges that democratic, middle-income countries face as they struggle to lift their citizens out of poverty and to achieve broad-based and environmentally sustainable growth.

This book is a history of the Asian Development Bank (ADB), a multilateral development bank established 50 years ago to serve Asia and the Pacific. Focusing on the region’s economic development, the evolution of the international development agenda, and the story of ADB itself, this book raises several key questions: What are the outstanding features of regional development to which ADB had to respond? How has the bank grown and evolved in changing circumstances? How did ADB’s successive leaders promote reforms while preserving continuity with the efforts of their predecessors? ADB has played an important role in the transformation of Asia and the Pacific the past 50 years. As ADB continues to evolve and adapt to the region’s changing development landscape, the experiences highlighted in this book can provide valuable insight on how best to serve Asia and the Pacific in the future.
