Both are based on ideas of simplifying and automating the driving process that have a long history. The interdisciplinary study shows how the early automobiles of the late 19th century became the car we know today by means of assistance systems only. This volume reveals the role they played throughout the history of the automobile.

Die Arbeit zeigt die Entwicklung des Kraftfahrzeugverkehrs in der Pfalz von der Geburt des Automobils 1885/6 bis in die Gegenwart. 1888 bekamen erstmals die Pfälzer das neue Vehikel zu Gesicht, als Carl Benz mit seinem Motor-Patentwagen II Fahrten in die Vorderpfalz unternahm. 1894 kaufte sich der Ludwigshafener Verleger Ernst Waldkirch als erster Pfälzer eines der neuen Automobile. Er ist der erste pfälzische Automobilist. Die Entwicklung des Kraftfahrzeugverkehrs verlief zunächst verhalten. 1914, ein Vierteljahrhundert nach der Erfindung des Automobils, liefen erst 1 250 Autos und Motorräder in der Pfalz. In den 1920er Jahren wuchs die Sehnsucht nach Auto und Mobilität, wurde aber durch die wirtschaftlichen Probleme der Zeit gebremst. Dennoch fuhren vor dem Zweiten Weltkrieg schon mehr als 40 000 Autos und Motorräder in der Pfalz. Wirklich rasant ging es aber erst in den 1950er Jahren los: 1953 wurde erstmals 100 000 Autos und Motorräder gezählt, 1977 waren es 500 000, 2007 mehr als eine Million. Wer die Entwicklung des Autoverkehrs beschreibt, kann die Straßen nicht aus dem Blick lassen. Die Arbeit verfolgt darum auch den Ausbau des Straßennetzes, vornehmlich des Fernstraßennetzes, also der Autobahnen und Reichs-/ Bundesstraßen sowie den Bau bzw. Neubau von Rheinbrücken; denn ein wesentlicher, vermutlich sogar größerer Teil des pfälzischen Fernstraßenverkehrs läuft in west-östlicher und nicht nord-südlicher Richtung. Leistungsfähige Rheinbrücken sind darum unverzichtbar. Die Arbeit zeigt anhand von Verkehrszählungen von 1910 bis heute in welchem Umfang der Kraftfahrzeug-Straßenverkehr in dieser Zeit gewachsen ist, und zwar sowohl als Personen- wie als Gütertransportverkehr.

Technology demands uniformity from human beings who encounter it. People encountering technology, however, differ from one another. Thinkers in the early twentieth century, observing the awful consequences of interactions between humans and machines—death by automobiles or dismemberment by factory machinery, for example—developed the idea of accident proneness: the tendency of a particular person to have more accidents than most people. In tracing this concept from its birth to its disappearance at the end of the twentieth century, Accident Prone offers a unique history of technology focused not on innovations but on their unintended consequences. Here, John C. Burnham shows that as the machine era progressed, the physical and economic impact of accidents coevolved with the rise of the insurance industry and trends in twentieth-century psychology. After World War I, psychologists determined that some people are more accident prone than others. This designation signaled a shift in social strategy toward minimizing accidents by diverting particular people away from dangerous environments. By the 1960s and 1970s, however, the idea of accident proneness gradually declined, and engineers developed new technologies to protect all people, thereby introducing a hidden, but radical, egalitarianism. Lying at the intersection of the history of technology, the history of medicine and psychology, and environmental history, Accident Prone is an ambitious intellectual analysis of the birth, growth, and decline of an idea that will interest anyone who wishes to understand how Western societies have grappled with the human costs of modern life.
