Working and interacting in foreign languages is widespread. While the relationship between language and behavior has been discussed for many years, empirical evidence for behavioral effects of foreign language use is surprisingly scarce. Stefan Nothelfer has conducted a series of laboratory studies to investigate and disentangle effects of language and culture on creativity and cooperation, important behavioral foundations of innovation. He draws insights from a large cross-country dataset with pairings between three languages, using a custom-built mobile laboratory. The author’s findings challenge theories of linguistic relativity, foreign language effects, and cultural accommodation, and enrich the empirical basis for fundamental research on language and behavior.

This book provides a comprehensive overview of the theoretical issues and existing research in relation to the emotions that learners’ experience when learning and using a FL, highlighting the two emotions under investigation, enjoyment and anxiety, which are the focus of the empirical research reported later in the book. Highlighting the crucial role of emotions in the foreign language (FL) learning process, this book reports the findings of a study investigating the relationship between foreign language enjoyment (FLE) and foreign language anxiety (FLA) in the context of Polish secondary school students learning English as a FL. Chapter 1 conceptualizes emotions and introduces their different typologies. Chapter 2 looks at the constructs of FLE and FLA, while Chapter 3 presents findings from a selection of studies on FLE, FLA, and the relationship between them. Chapter 4 describes the rationale for conducting the study and includes a detailed description of the analytical procedures. It goes on to present the results of the study, the discussion, and the study limitations. Finally, Chapter 5 highlights the pedagogical implications of the study and suggests some directions for future research. The book is of interest to specialists researching the role of emotions in SLA, as well as to FL teachers looking for realistic recommendations for their work with FL learners.

The COVID-19 pandemic has catalyzed a new era in English as a Foreign Language (EFL) learning and teaching by shifting EFL education from the face-to-face learning paradigm to the online and distance learning paradigm. Teachers and students have faced several challenges such as choosing appropriate web tools for presenting content either synchronously or asynchronously, motivating students to participate, and assessing students’ learning. Additionally, this shift to emergency remote online learning represents a challenge for students, particularly with managing their own learning. Taking into account that many students attend low-income schools with limited resources that lack reliable access to the internet and computers, this shift has resulted in growing equity gaps. Likewise, transitioning to emergency remote teaching has revealed a lack of digital competency and readiness amongst teachers. English as a Foreign Language in a New-Found Post-Pandemic World presents an overview of various tools, designs, and strategies utilized to provide digital teaching and assessment of the English language, shares research on using digital technologies for supporting English language learning, and identifies promising areas and directions for future innovations, applications, and research in digital English language learning and teaching. Covering critical topics such as digital teacher education, language learning environments, and online instructional tools, this reference work is crucial for administrators, policymakers, teacher educators, special educators, educational technologists, researchers, scholars, academicians, practitioners, instructors, and students.
