Social Science Careers Beyond the Academy provides a “road-map” to a career outside of academia for students of the social sciences who want to transition to a corporate or government environment after they complete their studies. It isn’t always easy to see how the skills you develop in academia will apply to corporate consultancy or research positions, or even to see clearly where these various career paths might lead and whether they might suit you. Are you a start-up person or do you think that a big, established organization will provide you with desirable opportunities? Would you prefer to work for a public or private firm, or perhaps for a government agency? Are you better at research or project management? How do you go about adapting your writing to the nonspecialist audience of colleagues in an organization? This book is written by a team of authors who straddle the line that separates academia from consultancy work and have mentored countless students to make a successful transition to the working world, whether in academia or not. The authors identify and categorize various popular paths that are available to you; describe the types of organization, roles, and what they involve; and show how to map your own skills, personality, and preferences to the jobs you might aspire to obtain. This book is the ultimate guide to building your path to success after you conclude your studies. Using an informal style, this book is ideal for social science students looking to make their next steps after academia by seeking positions in consulting and research firms, or with a government entity.

The Arts And The Legal Academy written by Dr Maksymilian Del Mar and has been published by Ashgate Publishing, Ltd. this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-01-28 with Law categories.

In Western culture, law is dominated by textual representation. Lawyers, academics and law students live and work in a textual world where the written word is law and law is interpreted largely within written and printed discourse. Is it possible, however, to understand and learn law differently? Could modes of knowing, feeling, memory and expectation commonly present in the Arts enable a deeper understanding of law's discourse and practice? If so, how might that work for students, lawyers and academics in the classroom, and in continuing professional development? Bringing together scholars, legal practitioners internationally from the fields of legal education, legal theory, theatre, architecture, visual and movement arts, this book is evidence of how the Arts can powerfully revitalize the theory and practice of legal education. Through discussion of theory and practice in the humanities and Arts, linked to practical examples of radical interventions, the chapters reveal how the Arts can transform educational practice and our view of its place in legal practice. Available in enhanced electronic format, the book complements The Moral Imagination and the Legal Life, also published by Ashgate.

Independent Scholars Meet The World written by Christine Caccipuoti and has been published by University Press of Kansas this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020-10-16 with Education categories.

For too long graduate school was viewed solely as a pipeline to teaching positions at colleges and universities. As MAs and PhDs proliferate and opportunities in the academy narrow, this timely book reminds us that the academy is only one of many venues for satisfying and successful scholarly endeavor. The contributors to Independent Scholars Meet the World represent a spectrum of graduate school experiences, from leaving midprogram to completing an MA or PhD. They include those who sought nontraditional paths and others who started in the familiar professorial direction only to change course. Ultimately, they are independent scholars—contributing to their fields but working outside the academy. Their stories illustrate the variety of options that exist beyond the university setting, from museum education and high school teaching to newer professions like podcasting and creating historical coloring books. These scholars impart advice about encountering difficulties, overcoming challenges, and learning to adapt to changing circumstances. All have something to share that the graduating scholar and those who guide them ought to hear about—cultivating networks; viewing departure from familiar terrain as an option, not a failure; and understanding the real value that an independent scholar brings to any number of situations. Perhaps the most important lesson this book offers is for those steeped in the belief that the only “right” way to be a scholar is as a tenured professor, and how, therefore, to embrace the label independent scholar The contributors to Independent Scholars Meet the World offer the advice and encouragement they wish they’d received when heading into uncharted postgraduate territory. They demonstrate that success awaits the determined and resourceful scholar pursuing a different path towards “expanded-ac.”

The Committees report examines the wide range of outdoor learning experiences, from lessons held within school grounds to residential expeditions abroad, and considers the place of outdoor learning in the curriculum from foundation stage to higher education. Issues discussed include: the value of outdoor learning and the decline of opportunities for educational opportunities outside the classroom; the barriers that deter schools from teaching outside the classroom, including perceptions of risks in school trips, the resources and curriculum time available for such trips, availability and costs involved; policy options for the Department for Education and Skills to help encourage schools improve and expand provision for outdoor learning; and funding implications. The Committees recommendations include that the DfES should issue a Manifesto for Outdoor Learning which gives all students the right to outdoor learning and which should attract a similar funding level to the music manifesto (around £30 million) in order to deliver real change.

Beyond Bullying offers guidance and advice on conducting practitioner research into bullying and provides resources to assist practitioners and researchers in doing so. It draws on a case study of almost 1,000 secondary school students over a period of 5 academic years to explore student perception of traditional bullying and cyber bullying, and how recommended approaches to bullying research can be applied to practice. The book provides an overview of bullying and cyber bullying literature, considering recent research in the field, how this was conducted, and what the findings were. In addition, the case study illustrates how a positive anti-bullying school ethos can be established through practitioner research. Each chapter will impart both practical and academic knowledge enabling the reader to: - conduct bullying research with secondary school students - complete research activities with bullies and victims - help students to raise awareness of bullying in school - inform school staff of problems occurring at class level. Beyond Bullying discusses how bullying research can be used to construct a model of bullying behaviour in the school environment and establishes suitable approaches to bullying intervention. The book will appeal to practitioner researchers in the area of school bullying, as well as practitioners, researchers and postgraduate students in the fields of education, sociology and related disciplines.
