Bilingualismus oder - vereinfacht ausgedr ckt - Zweisprachigkeit ist in der heutigen Gesellschaft durchaus keine Seltenheit mehr, sondern hat sich im Laufe der Jahre unter anderem durch zunehmende Migration zur Norm entwickelt, so dass das Thema verst rkt in den Fokus der ffentlichkeit ger ckt ist. Auf jene Entwicklung Bezug nehmend, besch ftigt sich dieses Buch zun chst allgemein mit dem Thema Zweiprachigkeit, indem versucht wird, eine Eingrenzung des Begriffs "Bilingualismus" vorzunehmen. Dabei wird insbesondere auf die Begriffe Sprachkompetenz und Sprachgebrauch eingegangen, welche die Basis zweier Ans tze hinsichtlich dieses Ph nomens bilden. Neben einer Begriffsbestimmung soll dar ber hinaus dargestellt werden, inwiefern bilinguale Sprecher klassifiziert werden k nnen. Zum besseren Verst ndnis der Zweisprachigkeit werden des Weiteren grundlegende Informationen zur Sprachentwicklung geliefert. In diesem Zusammenhang werden monolinguale und bilinguale Sprecher bez glich der Vorg nge im Gehirn miteinander verglichen sowie die Frage diskutiert, ob es ein optimales Alter zum Erlernen einer zweiten Sprache gibt und was es mit der Diskussion um die "kritischen Periode" auf sich hat. Im Anschluss daran wird auf den Schwerpunkt des Buches - n mlich den fr hen Zweitspracherwerb bei Kindern - eingegangen. Zun chst steht dabei der Erstspracherwerb sowohl als Grundlage des Zweitspracherwerbs, aber auch als Vergleichsm glichkeit im Mittelpunkt. Davon ausgehend wird einerseits der nat rliche Bilingualismus im Rahmen der Familie und andererseits der k nstliche Bilingualismus in einer Institution vorgestellt und auf diese Formen einflussnehmende Faktoren behandelt, die in der Aus bung der zweisprachigen Erziehung bedeutsam sind. Dafür gibt es mehrere Gründe wie z.B. ethnische und politische Unterdrückung und geographische Mobilität.Diese Faktoren tragen alle auf eigene Art dazu bei, dass verschiedene Menschen mit verschiedenen Sprachen in teilweise länger andauernden Verbindungen stehen. Dänemark ist dafür ein gutes Beispiel. Über 200 Jahre hinweg war Dänemark eine mehrsprachige Gesellschaft, in der nur Dänisch als offizielle Sprache gesehen wurde. Die sprachlichen Minderheiten waren so klein und wurden als unbedeutend bewertet, dass sie nicht beachtet wurden (vgl.JØRGENSEN 135)Es gibt eine große Zahl an Menschen, die eine andere Muttersprache als die Sprache des Landes, in dem sie leben haben. Die Anzahl solcher Menschen nimmt auch immer weiter zu. Aus diesem Grunde kann man die Zahl der heutzutage existierenden Sprachen nicht genau bestimmen. Es werden bis zu 500 Sprachen angegeben, die in weniger als 200 Ländern existieren. (CRYSTAL 1997: 362 vgl. CENOZ and GENESSEE 1998:3) Wie zuvor berichtet, muss es folglich eine bedeutende Anzahl an Staaten geben, in denen zwei oder mehr Sprachengesprochen werden. Schlussfolgernd ist Bi- bzw. Multilingualität keine Ausnahme, sondern stellt in zahlreichen Staaten für einen großen Teil der Bevölkerung die Regel dar:' [...] Available data indicate that there are many more bilingual ormultilingual individuals in the world than there are monolingual. [...] In many parts of the world, bilingualism or multilingualism and innovative approaches to education which involve the use of two or more languages constitute the normal everyday experience. (TUCKER 1998:4)Doch nicht immer wurde Zweisprachigkeit positiv bewertet. In den frühen 30er Jahren wurde Zweisprachigkeit als etwas Negatives und für die Entwicklung des Kindes Hemmendes angesehen:'Zweisprachigkeit bedeutet Hemmung und Störung der Entwicklung desKindes. Nur in der Muttersprache kann das Wort eine linderndeMutterhand sein oder eine Peitsche der Seele. Die zweisprachigen Kinder werden geistig 'taub auf dem Ohr'. Mit der Sprache wird vom Volk nicht nur seine Seele geraubt, sondern auch schon die Möglichkeit, sich ein entwickelteres Seelenleben zu erarbeiten.
