Peran bidang ilmu nutrigenetik dan nutrigenomik memperoleh perhatian selama dua dekade ini berkaitan dengan penyakit degeneratif. Nutrigenetik dan nutrigenomik merupakan bagian dari bidang ilmu Nutritional Genomics. Nutritional Genomics adalah ilmu pengetahuan yang mempelajari hubungan antara genom (rangkaian DNA lengkap dari suatu organisme), nutrien (zat gizi), dan kesehatan. Pada intinya, Nutritional Genomics adalah ilmu yang mempelajari hubungan antara genetik dan nutrisi, serta kaitannya dengan kesehatan. Mata kuliah Nutrigenomik mengajarkan pengetahuan tentang nutrigenomik dan proteomik, pengetahuan dasar tentang struktur dan organisasi kromosom serta penyakit terkait kelainan kromosom, organisasi genom dan ekspresi gen, mutasi dan polimorfisme, dasar-dasar analisis genetik, metode statistik untuk interpretasi data pengujian genetik, pengaruh diet terhadap ekspresi gen, serta nutrigenomik pada penyakit-penyakit tertentu (diabetes mellitus, hipertensi, obesitas, dan kanker). Buku ini ditujukan bagi mahasiswa ilmu gizi untuk mempersiapkan mereka memasuki dunia kesehatan dengan perkembangan teknologi yang pesat. Di masa depan, dapat diprediksi bahwa pelayanan gizi yang diberikan tidak hanya didasarkan pada kebutuhan dan profil kesehatan klien, melainkan juga profil genetik yang mereka miliki. Konsep ini sudah mulai dirintis dalam dunia kedokteran lebih dari satu dekade lalu dengan sebutan personalized medicine. Personalized medicine yang memanfaatkan pengetahuan di bidang molekuler ini ikut melahirkan cabang ilmu baru yang disebut sebagai nutrigenomik dan nutrigenetik. Diharapkan buku ini dapat menjadi pegangan untuk memahami cabang baru dari ilmu gizi ini. Kami berharap buku ini juga dapat bermanfaat bagi ahli gizi yang sudah praktik dan bekerja di berbagai bidang untuk memperluas pemahaman mereka mengenai perkembangan terbaru di dunia gizi.

This series of conference began in 1983 and is jointly organized by the YLL School of Medicine and Faculty of Engineering of the National University of Singapore and the Biomedical Engineering Society (Singapore). I am delighted to report that the 13 ICBME has more than 600 participants from 40 countries. We have received very high quality papers and inevitably we had to turndown some papers. For the first time, the Biomedical Engineering Society (USA) will be sponsoring two symposia, ie “Drug Delivery S- tems” and “Systems Biology and Computational Bioengineering”.
