Lorenz Böninger offers a fresh history of the birth of print in Italy through the story of one of its most important figures, Niccolò di Lorenzo della Magna. After having worked for several years for a judicial court in Florence, Niccolò established his business there and published a number of influential books. Among these were Marsilio Ficino’s De christiana religione, Leon Battista Alberti’s De re aedificatoria, Cristoforo Landino’s commentaries on Dante’s Commedia, and Francesco Berlinghieri’s Septe giornate della geographia. Many of these books were printed in vernacular Italian. Despite his prominence, Niccolò has remained an enigma. Although it is fashionable among modernists to claim that globalism emerged only since ca. 1800, the opposite can well be documented through careful comparative and transdisciplinary studies, as this volume demonstrates, offering a wide range of innovative perspectives on often neglected literary, philosophical, historical, or medical documents. Texts, images, ideas, knowledge, and objects migrated throughout the world already in the pre-modern world, even if the quantitative level compared to the modern world might have been different. In fact, by means of translations and trade, for instance, global connections were established and maintained over the centuries. Archetypal motifs developed in many literatures indicate how much pre-modern people actually shared. But we also discover hard-core facts of global economic exchange, import of exotic medicine, and, on another level, intensive intellectual debates on religious issues. Literary evidence serves best to expose the extent to which contacts with people in foreign countries were imaginable, often desirable, and at times feared, of course. The pre-modern world was much more on the move and reached out to distant lands out of curiosity, economic interests, and political and military concerns. Diplomats crisscrossed the continents, and artists, poets, and craftsmen traveled widely. We can identify, for instance, both the Vikings and the Arabs as global players long before the rise of modern globalism, so this volume promises to rewrite many of our traditional notions about pre-modern worldviews, economic conditions, and the literary sharing on a global level, as perhaps best expressed by the genre of the fable.

Federigo II da Montefeltro, conte- poi duca- di Urbino, e Sigismondo Pandolfo dei Malatesti furono due veri figli del Rinascimento: Sigismondo eccessivo in tutto, nei vizi come nelle virtù, Federigo, detto dagli umanisti Lume della Italia, prudente ed allo stesso tempo capace di ferocia (probabilmente assassinò il fratellastro e abbandonò al sacco ed alla strage Fossombrone, colpevole di aver aperto le porte al Malatesti, Montorio e Volterra, e fu tra i mandanti occulti della congiura dei Pazzi); furono entrambi tra i più grandi capitani del Rinascimento, divisi tra loro da un odio feroce, che trascese le tradizionali rivalità delle due dinastie per diventare qualcosa di personale e di cieco; entrambi uomini di straordinaria cultura, veri figli del Rinascimento, che popolarono le proprie corti di umanisti ed artisti come Brunelleschi, Piero della Francesca, Leon Battista Alberti, Pedro Berruguete, Luciano Laurana, e che utilizzarono i loro guadagni di mercenari per l’edificazione di due dei più grandi capolavori dell’arte universale, il Tempio malatestiano di Rimini e lo splendido Palazzo Ducale di Urbino. E’ stato scritto che la lotta tra Malatesta e Montefeltro si svolse come un torneo mostruoso, tra due uomini, gli ‘ultimi due cavalieri’ che si affrontavano nel crepuscolo del medioevo. Era un conflitto arcaico, combattuto però con i mezzi della guerra moderna, le bombarde e le macchine per l’assedio. Una guerra combattuta con le armi tradizionali, sui cambi di battaglia, nelle cancellerie diplomatiche delle due corti, ma anche con la propaganda, che ci ha consegnato un’immagine di Federigo II come il lato luminoso, apollineo, del sovrano rinascimentale, e Sigismondo Pandolfo come quello oscuro, dionisiaco. Questa è la loro storia, e la storia del Quattrocento italiano, splendente e corrusco di sangue.
