Os ensaios aqui publicados fazem parte de uma reflexão ampla acerca de algumas questões do desenvolvimento da Ciência moderna, visando promover a aproximação dos seus vários ramos, que tendem a viver como ovos numa caixa: juntos, mas sem se tocarem e, logicamente, sem se conhecerem. É o caso, em particular, da Psicologia e da Física, duas ciências que poderiam beneficiar em evoluir juntas; sendo o conhecimento mútuo da História e da Epistemologia de cada uma delas, uma das formas possíveis de o conseguir. O primeiro ensaio articula-se em torno de Galileu, que estabeleceu um rumo que perdura até hoje, ao instituir uma forma de conceber e praticar a pesquisa científica; pousando metaforicamente a primeira pedra de um edifício que se viria a revelar formidável; lançando ou relançando um movimento vasto e sublime, a «emancipação pelo conhecimento», que faz parte da influência libertadora da Ciência, uma das maiores forças que concorrem para a liberdade humana. O segundo ensaio promove a mesma aproximação, sob um ângulo bastante diferente: se a Psicologia tem muito a aprender com a Física, a Física também poderá aprender algo com a Psicologia, designadamente acerca do chamado contexto epistemológico da descoberta científica. Nesse sentido, o famoso epigrama atribuído a Ernest Rutherford — «all science is either physics or stamp collecting» — que esteve na origem de um quiproquo duradouro, serve de pretexto para mostrar que as operações de raciocínio pressupostas no gesto de coligir — como «seriar» ou «classificar» — poderão ser precursoras de outras operações mentais mais complexas, necessárias (mesmo que não suficientes) para o exercício da investigação científica. Servindo de igual modo de pretexto para aduzir a inexistência de uma única via de acesso ao conhecimento; ou um modelo singular, ou um método específico, para conceber e construir conhecimento, à custa da exclusão de todos os outros. Nem em Física, nem nas outras ciências.

Throughout this book, an analysis is made of how History teaching is organized in what the International Standard Classification of Education standards call Secondary Education (ISCED 2 and 3), in four different European countries, in order to compare the importance given to History, the type of curriculum chosen and its place in the Secondary Education. In addition to Portugal, the other three countries (Spain, France and England) were chosen because of the historical relation each one has with Portugal. In the recent research work entitled Monuments, Territory and Identity in Estado Novo we have found that a specific political ideology materialised in the Portuguese spatial organisation based on the definition of a project towards the consciousness of a legacy, an unchallenged strategy devised in the early revival of a Portugueseness defended by the regime led by António de Oliveira Salazar. The notion of Estado Novo would thus be presumably seen as a personal programme seriously committed to nationalist and anti-democratic convictions, projected and sanctioned in a new Constitution responsible for imposing a tendentially totalitarian power. However, due to a number of episodes and facts surrounding the Dictatorship period, such a plan for Portugal was implemented across the land through many and varied works and transformations, which certainly shaped the unmistakable images of the Salazarist Nation. They were known as portraits of Portugueseness, however, as we have found, they not only highlighted those much desired nationalist and regionalist features, but also revealed an international, modern, allegedly illegitimate and forbidden character. The campaigns for the reintegration of national monuments implemented under official technical guidance, which expressly ordered that all old and historical structures had to be returned to their original state, supported the required general aspect and fascistic plans from the North to the South of the territory. The energetic propaganda activity carried out in the first two decades by the Diário de Notícias special delegate, António Ferro, allowed the Portuguese people, and hopefully the world, to idealise about the fairy tale homeland that was believed to be under (re)construction. The ambition was to domesticate everyone's views of Portugal. To that end, commemorations, exhibitions, publications, awards and many other events were organised to disclose and popularise such an ideal. While the cinema, on a smaller scale, was not one of those privileged instruments of indoctrination, it nevertheless reproduced some frames that represented well the animated version of national life, especially through various documentaries on everyday life in the countryside, or the unparalleled history of monuments. Our purpose takes that line to uncover how this industry was appropriated for the sake of the irreproachable ideological myths mustered by the Estado Novo, and how the national monuments portrayed the idea of being Portuguese on canvas. This short-film retrospective of Salazarist Monuments consists of a total of fourteen documentaries shown at Cinemateca Portuguesa.

In recent decades, the successive decline in the number of births has characterised the Portuguese demography, while average life expectancy has increased, this being reflected in a demographic structure with an ageing population. There are fewer people, and they die later. This case is not manifested in the same way across the country, albeit the underlying trend is common to the various rural and urban territories. In terms of population structure, the fact that there are fewer children and school-aged young people does have its consequences, hence why human resource and equipment requirements in the education sector must be remodelled on a continuous basis to address this situation. Against this new demographic, economic and social context, the primary aim of research lies in understanding how the Central Region will evolve in the next two decades (2011-2031), giving some indicators and growth trends that allow us to characterise the future population of this territory. Discussions also cover the implications arising from the changes in the Portuguese population, in particular in the Central Region, addressing the demand for the education system, the training offer to be designed, and the required human resources, and how the different institutions and organisations will respond to an increasingly ageing population with different needs and requirements.

The beginning of the millennium has been influenced by a visible acceleration of the globalisation process. A complex and dynamic phenomenon, it has generated a series of consequences at the political, strategic and military levels, as well as the cultural level.
