An understanding of the mechanism of action of anticancer agents depends on investigations into the cell cycle effects of these agents. The intent of this volume is to review our current knowledge about these basic cell cycle effects and suggest what directions future investigations should take. Chapters 1 and 2 are general, basic chapters dealing with the biology of the cell cycle per se and quantitative cytokinetics (techniques) respectively. The remaining nine chapters each cover a specific anticancer compound as examples of various classes of anticancer agents. In bringing this information together for the first time this volume represents a major step in the understanding of the mechanisms that are involved in the treatment of cell cycle disorders.

Drugs and the Cell Cycle provides an introduction to fundamental principles and studies on the mechanisms of drug action on proliferating cells. The book is intended to reduce the time lag between observation and practical application. Comprised of 10 chapters, the book describes the plant alkaloids, alkylating agents, mercurials, adrenergic agents, radiomimetics, narcotics, hallucinogens, mitogens, hepatotoxins, antiobiotics, and antimetabolites of various types. The text also emphasizes the drugs used in cancer chemotherapy, and the in vitro and in vivo cell systems of bacteria, protozoa, sea urchins, and mammals. The concepts are presented with comprehensive illustrations and tables to help readers obtain more efficient understanding and learning. The information and concepts presented in this volume will be of great interest to scientists and students in many disciplines, including physiology, pharmacology, and oncology, as well as cellular, molecular, and developmental biology. The book will also fill the gap between drug experimental observations and their potential relevance to man.

Leading clinicians and investigators review in a comprehensible and user-friendly style all the latest information about the molecular biology of cell cycle control and demonstrate its clinical relevance to understanding neoplastic diseases. Topics range from Cdk inhibitors and cell cycle regulators to the prognostic value of p27 and tumor suppressor genes as diagnostic tools. Actual case studies show how the new molecular understanding has produced such drugs as Flavopiridol and Sulindac. The book brings all the recent critical research findings to bear on clinical practice, and clearly shows their powerful impact on the diagnostics, prognostics, and therapeutics of cancer, AIDS, and cardiovascular disease.

Cell division is a central biological process: it yields the cells required for development and growth, and supplies the replacement cells to repair and maintain old or damaged tissue. This book gives the students a complete overview of the process of cell division - from chromosome division, through mitosis, cytokinesis, and meiosis.

Cell Cycle Deregulation In Cancer written by Greg H. Enders and has been published by Springer Science & Business Media this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2010-03-10 with Medical categories.

Cancer is fundamentally a disease of abnormal cell proliferation: Cancer cells multiply when and where they should not. This proliferation entails escape from normal bounds imposed by the tissue environment, the internal biology of the cell (DNA damage, chromosomal imbalances, disorganized mitotic spindles), and the proliferative history of the cell (normal generational times). Some of the key oncogenic events in cancer directly perturb proteins that regulate progression through the cell division cycle, others alter cell cycle progression indirectly, through effects on signaling pathway that impinge on the cell cycle. This biology is fundamentally important in cancer therapy. Many of the workhorse treatments for cancer rely on killing proliferating cells. Furthermore, there is growing recognition that stem cell-transit amplifying cell hierarchies may persist or be generated during tumorigenesis, generating important functional heterogeneity in cell cycle control among tumor cells, with far-reaching scientific and clinical implications. This volume outlines major cell cycle perturbations that drive tumorigenesis and considers the prospects for using such knowledge in cancer therapy.

The fundamental question of how cells grow and divide has perplexed biologists since the development of the cell theory in the mid-19th century, when it was recognized by Virchow and others that “all cells come from cells.” In recent years, considerable effort has been applied to the identification of the basic molecules and mechanisms that regulate the cell cycle in a number of different organisms. Such studies have led to the elucidation of the central paradigms that underpin eukaryotic cell cycle control, for which Lee Hartwell, Tim Hunt, and Paul Nurse were jointly awarded the Nobel Prize for Medicine and Physiology in 2001 in recognition of their seminal contributions to this field. The importance of understanding the fundamental mechanisms that modulate cell division has been reiterated by relatively recent discoveries of links between cell cycle control and DNA repair, growth, cellular metabolism, development, and cell death. This new phase of integrated cell cycle research provides further challenges and opportunities to the biological and medical worlds in applying these basic concepts to understanding the etiology of cancer and other proliferative diseases.

The Cell Cycle written by Valerie W. Hu and has been published by Springer Science & Business Media this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012-12-06 with Science categories.

Interest in the cell cycle has grown explosively in recent years as a result of the identification of key cell cycle regulators and their substrates. Aside from enhancing our understanding of normal cellular growth controls, this new knowledge has also becn valuable in elucidating mechanisms of growth deregulation which occur in diseased states, such as cancer and, in some instances, viral or parasitic infections. The Thirteenth Washington International Spring Symposium was organized with the intention of bringing together scientists working on different aspects of the cell cycle. Scientific topics presented ranged from molecular regulators and effectors to mitosis specific changes in cell architecture to the role of the cell cycle in development and disease. The goal of this gathering was to help formulate a more comprehensive and integrated picture of events driving and being driven by the cell cycle, as well as to evaluate the possibilities for clinical application of this knowledge. This symposium, held in Washington, D.C. from May 10-14, 1993, was attended by more than 400 scientists from 20 countries, including many of the scientific leaders in this field. This volume contains most of the papers presented at the seven plenary sessions in addition to selected contributions from a total of nine special oral and poster sessions.
