Calcium and Cell Function, Volume III covers the many aspects of research on calcium, dealing with its biochemistry, biology, and pharmacology in animals as well as in plants. The book discusses a novel cellular signaling system based on the integration of phospholipid and calcium metabolism; the transport of calcium by sarcoplasmic reticulum; and the energetics and chemistry for interactions between calmodulin and calmodulin-binding proteins. The text also describes the specificity of trifluoperazine and related phenothiazines for calcium-binding proteins; the structure, function, and regulation of phosphorylase kinase; and the regulation of glycogen synthase by multiple protein kinases. The role of calmodulin in synaptic function and neurosecretion; the stimulation of the synthesis of neurotransmitters by calmodulin-dependent phosphorylation; as well as the role of calcium in axoplasmic transport in nerve are also considered. The book further tackles calcium control of the intestinal microvillus cytoskeleton; the possible role of calmodulin in the regulation of insulin release and protein phosphorylation by calcium and cyclic AMP; and the role of calcium in mediating cellular functions important for growth and development in higher plants. The text also looks into the localization of calmodulin in tissue culture cells; and the characterization and regulation of calcium-dependent neutral protease. Zoologists, cell biologists, biochemists, and pharmacologists will find the book invaluable.

Calcium In Cell Cycles And Cancer written by James F. Whitfield and has been published by CRC Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1995-04-24 with Medical categories.

The second edition of Calcium in Cell Cycles and Cancer presents a unique overview of calcium's roles in the several stages of cell cycles initiated by signals from "velcroceptors" and other kinds of growth-factor receptors. This book integrates the actions of calcium and its partner, cyclic AMP, with those of the growing family of newly discovered, stage-specific, cyclin-dependent protein kinases of the "cell cycle engine." The book also shows calcium to be a terminal, ultimately apoptogenic differentiator of colon and skin cells, as well as a major player in lymphocyte selection, activation, and proliferation. This edition relates and explains the dramatic changes in calcium's involvement in the cell cycle and the triggering of terminal differentiation programs that happen during carcinogenesis and are important keys to understanding cancer.

The Endothelium written by Michel Félétou and has been published by Morgan & Claypool Publishers this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2011 with Science categories.

The endothelium, a monolayer of endothelial cells, constitutes the inner cellular lining of the blood vessels (arteries, veins and capillaries) and the lymphatic system, and therefore is in direct contact with the blood/lymph and the circulating cells. The endothelium is a major player in the control of blood fluidity, platelet aggregation and vascular tone, a major actor in the regulation of immunology, inflammation and angiogenesis, and an important metabolizing and an endocrine organ. Endothelial cells controls vascular tone, and thereby blood flow, by synthesizing and releasing relaxing and contracting factors such as nitric oxide, metabolites of arachidonic acid via the cyclooxygenases, lipoxygenases and cytochrome P450 pathways, various peptides (endothelin, urotensin, CNP, adrenomedullin, etc.), adenosine, purines, reactive oxygen species and so on. Additionally, endothelial ectoenzymes are required steps in the generation of vasoactive hormones such as angiotensin II. An endothelial dysfunction linked to an imbalance in the synthesis and/or the release of these various endothelial factors may explain the initiation of cardiovascular pathologies (from hypertension to atherosclerosis) or their development and perpetuation. Table of Contents: Introduction / Multiple Functions of the Endothelial Cells / Calcium Signaling in Vascular Cells and Cell-to-Cell Communications / Endothelium-Dependent Regulation of Vascular Tone / Conclusion / References

The beta cells of the pancreatic islets of Langerhans are the only cells in the body that produce and secrete insulin. This metabolic hormone plays a central role in the maintenance of glucose homeostasis. This book provides a comprehensive review of the beta cell in health and disease. The book’s primary aim is to encourage investigators to become actively involved in diabetes research and the search for new approaches to prevent and treat diabetes.

Cellular Regulation of Secretion and Release is a compilation of papers that deals with the processes in cellular perception of stimuli and the response to them. Part I describes the receptor occupancy and regulation of stimulus through the use of video image intensification techniques. This part also explains a model for the transmembrane regulation of adenylate cyclase that shows the mechanisms that cells use in sensing and responding to extracellular conditions. Part II discusses the early responses of secretory cells including changes in phospholipid metabolism, in electrophysiological events, and in macromolecular carboxymethylation. One paper suggests that protein-carboxyl methylase has a role in neurotransmission and secretion whether as a part of the exocytotic process or just a help to regulate the process. Part III addresses the role in secretion of the subcellular architecture particularly as regards the role of the cytoskeleton in endocrine function or insulin secretion and cytoskeletal proteins. Part IV discusses the synthesis, processing, and storage of secretory products, including the role of signal peptides, their properties, and interactions. Part V addresses the mechanisms and modulation of secretion and release in a study of Leydig cells. One paper concludes that the regulation of release, through dopamine and TRH factors, can have more than one mechanism of action. This book can be useful for cellular microbiologists, bacteriologists, endocrinologists, researchers, and academicians in the biochemistry and in reproductive medicine.
